I thought today was going to be a “Reality Roundup” but after spending almost two hours writing this recap, I think giving “Idol” its own column every Wednesday is the plan from here on out. So every Wednesday, expect an “American Idol” recap. Towards the end of the season, when we’re down to less than six contestants or so, I’ll probably just include the other reality shows afterwards. But until then, it’s “Idol” recap on Wednesdays, and your “Reality Roundup”, plus news and notes on Fridays. I think my “Idol” recap will be different and more opinionated than any other review you see on the Internet. I have no allegiances to networks and what not, so, I can pretty much say what I feel. If you sucked, you sucked. And I’ll say you did. I’ve just never seen a real good “Idol” recap anywhere on the internet, so I figured I’d do one. Most recaps just tell you what song people sang and what the judges said. This recap won’t really do that. Don’t have to agree with it, or you might agree with all of it. If anything, I would want you to come out of it thinking about some things that maybe you didn’t think of before.
Before we get into last nights performances, since I haven’t talked about “Idol” all season yet, lets go over a couple things beginning with the judges, in particular, the addition of Kara. Love it. In fact, I wish Kara would replace Paula. Hopefully, that’s the route “Idol” is headed since Paula’s contract expires at the end of this season. Paula adds nothing to this show whatsoever other than goofiness. Kara is much more accomplished in the music world, she’s much more relevant to today’s artists, and actually critiques the singers. Whereas Paula has none of that and half the time she’s loopy. Or riding an emotional roller coaster at 100mph. I’m hoping the reason they brought Kara in is because they think Paula will leave after this season and rather than start with someone fresh next season, the audience will have least warmed up to her. Lets face it, of the four judges and Seacrest, Paula is the most expendable person on that cast, no doubt about it. I seriously doubt this show loses viewers if Paula isn’t around next season. And oh yeah, Kara is hot.
I loved the whole “phone sex” scandal that “Idol” had before last nights show. They’ve always used 1-866-IDOLS 01 through 12 as their phone number for the contestants. Well, since they added the 13th contestant this season, you would assume that number would be 1-866-IDOLS 13. Uhhhh, nope. Couldn’t happen. Why? Because if you dial that number, it’s a phone sex line where you pay $1.99 to hear some overweight housewife breathe heavy into the phone so you can get off. Hence the reason they had to go with 1-866-IDOLS 36 for Alexis. That’s awesome. Probably want to do a little research next time before you start adding a bonus contestant to the finals, people. Can you imagine the uproar if no one would’ve caught that? Might’ve been the funniest thing to ever happen on a reality show. Well, other than Jason Mesnick trying to act like he’d never spoken to Molly in two months. Ohhhhhhhhh snap! Ha ha. Hey, I told you it’ll be a running joke til the end of time. And nice to see ABC have more fun at Jasons expense during “DWTS” on Monday night.
Every season it seems like there’s a theme amongst the judges that they’ll go with (mostly Simon). In the past it’s been stuff like “that was very Cabaret”, or they’ll harp on song selection (which they still do), Randy will go with his “pitchy” stuff, and Paula will talk about how well people dress if she doesn’t want to focus on their awful singing. Have you picked up on this years “go to” phrase yet? How about this one, “Who are you as an artist?” It’s driving me nuts. Yes, I feel it is relevant sometimes, but they are saying it way too much. Considering no one is allowed to sing an original song on this show until the final two (when a cheesy, motivational, religiously slanted ballad is written for them), let’s face it, the show is essentially for the best karaoke singer. It’s just some are better than others. Carrie Underwood you knew would be a star just by listening to her voice. But she still had to sing twelve weeks of cover songs. So the “Who are you as an artist?” bit gets a little old sometimes. Lets cut it out.
Here’s something I want to make perfectly clear when talking about “Idol” for the next couple months in this blog. There’s a reason why “Idol” has been the most watched show on television for the last few years. It’s because EVERYONE has an opinion on the contestants and the judges. You have to understand that someone you absolutely hate and would never consider listening to in a million years is also someone elses favorite singer. And vice versa. Yes, I have my favorites this season that I like, but that doesn’t mean the ones that aren’t my favorites can’t give good performances. When I judge a performance, it is strictly my opinion and my opinion only. You can agree or disagree. However, I would appreciate it that once people start commenting on the page about who they liked and didn’t like, that others are respectful enough to not start bad mouthing them for what they think. If you love Michael Sarver, and someone else thinks he’s a talentless redneck, so be it. What makes the show so popular is that two people can listen to the exact same performance from an individual and come out with two completely opposite opinions. Usually comes down to a matter of taste in music. Just please keep the sniping at each other to minimum.
For those of us that have watched “Idol” for a long time, as you now know, just because you’re the best singer doesn’t mean you’ll actually win. Taylor Hicks was the best “performer” of season 5, but Chris Daughtry was the best singer. And he finished 4th or 5th. So I always take that into consideration when making my predictions. Obviously, your backstory and your likability with Middle America plays just as big a role, if not bigger, than your singing ability sometimes. Taylor Hicks is a prime example of that. Clay Aiken was a better singer than Reuben, but Reuben was a big, cuddly teddy bear so people voted for him. I could go on and on with examples from past seasons, but you get the point. A lot of people tend to forget that America is the one voting for the winner, and for the most part, Americans aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer. Just because so-and-so gets eliminated doesn’t mean they were a bad singer. Just means that more people flooded the phone lines for someone else they liked better. Your singing ability helps, but lets make no mistake about it, this is a popularity contest as well.
I’ll tell you right now, my favorite contestants this season right now are (in no particular order) Danny Gokey, Megan Corkery, Alexis Grace, Scott MacIntyre, and Michael Sarver. And that is pretty much based on if they were to put out an album, I’d want to listen to it. The ones I didn’t mention, not so much. But it doesn’t mean they’re not talented. If I liked their performance, I’ll tell you why I liked it. If I didn’t like it, I’ll tell you why I didn’t. Just because the other contestants aren’t in my “favorites” list, doesn’t mean I won’t compliment them and it doesn’t mean I hate them. Probably just means, for whatever reason, their overall persona just doesn’t appeal to me. In fact, you’ll see this week I think the best performance last night was from someone who isn’t one of my favorites. So see? I can be fair. I will always acknowledge talent and a good performance. And just because those are my favorite contestants right now, doesn’t mean they will be when the season ends. Some others might start to grow on me. I can already tell you one person right now that I completely have no idea how I feel about. I don’t know whether I truly dislike them, or want to see them do well. I’m starting to lean one way thought. It’s baffling really. Ok, onto last nights performances. For the record, a lot of you probably don’t know this, but I’m a HUGE Michael Jackson fan. Always have been, and always will be. So I was very much looking forward to last nights performances.
Lil’ Rounds, “The Way You Make Me Feel”: It was good. She’s a good singer. This performance didn’t knock me over though. I thought she was better last Tuesday actually. And boy, does she have a booty on her. Good lord. When are they having Sir Mix-a-Lot week so she can sing “Baby Got Back?” One thing that bugs about Kara: When she speaks to the black singers, she tends to go a little “sister” on us.
Scott MacIntyre, “Keep the Faith”: Didn’t really care much for the performance because I thought he’d pick a more popular song. Maybe something like, “Say, Say, Say”. I don’t think he has to worry about going home because of the likability factor, but he won’t win this thing. I’m curious to see if he’s on the piano every week. Although last week he sang that Bruce Hornsby song better, obviously being “visually impaired” (how did I know that would be the phrase they were gonna run with this season), he just doesn’t look comfortable without his piano. He has staying power, probably make it at least half way through the show. Impossible not to cheer for a guy like this. Even as an MJ fan, I wasn’t even too familiar with the song.
Danny Gokey, “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”: I’ll say this about Danny, and a lot of you know he is my favorite and I hope to see him win, the fact he’s gotten the “favorite” label from the judges could end up hurting him. Outside of Carrie Underwood, whoever they liked in the beginning has never really ended up winning. Good performance last night, and Simon was right about the dancing, it was awkward and corny. He’s not a dancer, he’s a singer. But at least he admits it. I liked it, he can “sing the phonebook” (as the judges like to tell us), but after hearing his version of “Hero” by Mariah Carey, he set the bar pretty high for himself. I thought that was one of the five best performances this show has ever had. In any season. Once again, just my opinion.
Michael Sarver, “You Are Not Alone”: One of my top three Michael Jackson songs of all-time. Love this song. And I was shocked that I liked the way Sarver sang it. Totally nothing like the original, but he had his own spin to it which I didn’t think was all that bad. I was more than surprised by this performance. He did it justice.
Jasmine Murray, “I’ll Be There”: Kinda bored by the performance. Did nothing for me. Got a good voice, but sometimes I feel like its not enough with her. I don’t know if she has the full package. I think she’ll be one of the first four or five to leave.
Kris Allen, “Remember the Time”: Thought Simon and Randy nailed it when they said it was the wrong song for his guitar. I mean, with the band playing so loudly in the background, you could barely hear any sound that his guitar was making. If he would’ve just sang the song without the guitar, it would’ve sounded exactly the same. The guitar added nothing. Very average performance, but chicks like him. Although, I’m sure they’re disappointed to see he has a wife. Probably will hurt him in the long run. There’s a reason Katharine McPhee never mentioned once during her season that she was doinking a guy 19 years older than her. Kinda takes away the appeal, you know?
Allison Iraheta, “Give In To Me”: Ok, I’ll admit it. I just don’t get it. I get that she’s sixteen, and I get that she has a good voice, but I’d take a seventeen year old Jordin Sparks over her any day of the week. I’m completely opposite of the judges on this girl. I think she’s kind of a screamer, trying to act way older than she is, and comes off a little arrogant. Probably wants to take back that comment last night about “cutting” too. Yikes. You could see some peoples faces behind the judges even grimace at that one. They can call her the underdog all they want, but she won’t win. I don’t even think she makes it halfway through.
Anoop Desai, “Beat It”: Terrible. Tried way too hard. And also, tried to look “hard” while singing the song. Like he was actually mad during his performance telling me to “Beat It.” That was straight out of a high school talent competition. Awful. Hated it. And you know what? He’ll be back another week. He ain’t goin’ home just yet.
Jorge Nunez, “Never Can Say Goodbye”: Bored by it. Not a recognizable song, didn’t do much with it, and pretty much a forgettable performance. He could be in trouble tonight.
Megan Corkrey, “Rockin Robin”: Love her but hated the song choice. Talk about a talent show performance. I’m not talking about the dancing, because that’s her quirkiness and she’s been doing that from the very beginning. I love her voice, her likability factor is through the roof, she’s the best looking female on the show this season, and, well, her mom is a MILF. But just to hear “Rockin Robin” on that stage last night reminded me of my 7th grade Lip Sync contest since someone performed that back in 1988. Just was too cutesy of a performance.
Adam Lambert, “Black or White”: This will be the most talked about contestant on the show this season, good or bad. You either love him or you hate him. There is no in between. Well, except with me right now. We’ve already seen pictures leaked on the internet with him dressed in drag and kissing other guys, so the song choice of “Black or White” didn’t surprise me in the least bit. Don’t think there wasn’t a subtle message he was trying to get across with that. To each their own. Whatever the case, it was the best performance of the night. Whether you think he’s too theatrical, over-the-top, or just flat out weird, he is the best “performer” the show has, and he’ll go far. This is the guy I’m completely torn on. He performed “Satisfaction” two weeks ago, and I still can’t decide if I hated it with a passion, or really liked it.
Yes, he has an entertainment background. He lives in Hollywood, was in “Wicked”, and obviously has been trained professionally before, so in that aspect, I wouldn’t mind seeing a guy like him succeed. This show has always been about giving someone a chance, and for a guy in his late 20′s who seemingly has paid his dues, it’s nice to see him perform. I know he’s a good singer, I know he’ll do well, but the “freak” factor will ultimately prevent him from winning the thing. Do I think he’ll get a record deal? Absolutely. But let’s remember who a majority of the people who vote on this show are: middle aged white people, probably leaning on the conservative side. As sad as it sounds, his look is basically what’ll cost him the title. If he wins, I’ll be the first to congratulate him. I wouldn’t have a problem with him winning whatsoever. I just don’t think he will. But I could see him in the final two or three. He is starting to grow on me.
Matt Giraud, “Human Nature”: Forgettable performance, and not in a bad way. He got screwed because he had to follow Adam. If this performance fell in between Anoop and Jorge’s, it would’ve gotten more praise than it did. He’s a really good singer, but the Justin Timberlake look is gonna get old for me, I already know it. Nothing wrong with trying to emulate the guy, but its almost too much. I like him though. Just kinda got lost in the shuffle last night.
Alexis Grace, “Dirty Diana”: She got screwed because her performance was up against the clock. The judges didn’t give her more than a sentence because they were running out of time. I thought it was good, not great. Solid performance. Definitely has no chance of getting eliminated tonight, but might want to pull back on the sexiness factor. Her likability is big right now because of the “cute kid” factor, but it’s almost like she’s trying too hard to shed the good girl image. I still don’t know which female I like better, her or Megan. It’s close. I’ll get back to you on this. I think Alexis has a better recording voice, but Megan might have more of the total package. Tough one.
So now it’s time for our first ever “Reality Steve Top and Bottom 3 Performances of the Night”. These are going to be my personal choices as to which ones I liked, and disliked, the most. Doesn’t mean it’s who I think will end up in the bottom three. You might even see a performance I have in my top three end up as one of the people I predict in the bottom three. This will be followed by my prediction of who I think WILL be in the bottom 3, and who will get eliminated. Complete guessing on my part.
Reality Steve’s Top 3 Performances:
1. Adam Lambert
2. Matt Giraud
3. Danny Gokey
Reality Steve’s Bottom 3 Performances:
1. Anoop Desai
2. Jorge Nunez
3. Megan Corkrey
They said at the beginning of the show that two people are getting eliminated tonight. Then mentioned at the end that there will be a twist that they’ve never done before. I don’t know what that is, sorry. So here’s who I think will be in the bottom 3.
Reality Steve’s Bottom 3 Prediction:
1. Jorge Nunez
2. Allison Iraheta
3. Jasmine Murray
Reality Steve’s Prediction of Who Will Get Eliminated: Jorge Nunez. If they eliminate two, then Jorge and Jasmine Murray are my two picks. Although, as much as I would hate to see it, Megan could easily be in the bottom three and replace Jasmine. There are enough people who might think the performance last night was too cheesy. I hope not.
That’s it. Back on Friday with your “Reality Roundup” covering all the other shows I’m watching including, “Dancing with the Stars”, “Survivor”, “Celebrity Apprentice”, “The City”, “Sober House”, and a few other tidbits. Any questions, comments, emails, praises, criticisms, email me at steve@realitysteve.com. You can join the “I Love Reality Steve” Facebook group, add me as a friend, or both, by clicking on the links down the right hand column. See you Friday.
Steve, if you watch DWTS you should do recaps!! Well, if you have time…I’m sure you could skip on the Hills and the City for DWTS (well, just as long as Melissa is on…which I’m hoping is until the end. btw, she kicked major ass last night!! loved gilles and shawn as well).
p.s. you said carrie was the only favorite who went on to win…but Fantasia was a favorite of Simon from quite early on in her season too I think
Steve thanks for being so right on about Adam and not acting all homophobic about him. I personally don’t care who he sleeps with at all, he’s the best singer to be on Idol since Carrie.
Hi there. I agree with you on almost everything except the Megan thing. I can see she is pretty but for some reason the contrast between her sweet/ innocent like beauty and her tattoos don’t do it for me. That and her voice is okay, but her performance leaves a lot to be desired.
I am totally for Adam. I hope he makes it far because I look forward to future performances. I think Jorge is a great singer, though his performance was pretty bland. I would hate to see him go so early though.
I am so disappointed in Anoop’s performance. I wish he had picked another song.
And I hope people don’t stop voting for Danny because they think he’s got it in the bag.
Love, love, LOVE Adam Lambert. C’mon Steve, come to the dark side. LOL Also, Danny Gokey — LOVE HIM. I hope the final 2 come down to Adam & Danny. How’s that for night and day?
Did anyone hear Megan “Caw-Caw” at the end of her performance? Talk about kooky-wah? It was just o.k., she is cute, but I’m not sure if she’ll get the votes. I think this group is an amazing group of talented people, and they just have the knack for picking songs that don’t suit them. I wasn’t blown away by any of the performances last night, but I do like Danny and felt he was the most solid, Michael too. I voted like crazy to keep Jorge because I love his voice and want him to have a chance to sing a Jon Secada song and show us (Kara) his “Chops”.
So you’re not finding Kara annoying? I think she comes really close to crossing the line with some of her comments and think one of these days she’s gonna let a “bad” word fly. Are they on a 3 second delay?
Did Paula get some last minute “work” done? It looked like they got the botox shots too close to her upper lip….something was off about her face, again.
The other trend I noticed this year is saying “its a family show” and then everyone making a lot of suggestive remarks.
Snoop will be in the bottom and probably go home, a) because of his bad song choice and b) they highlighted his religion which isn’t gonna have a whole lot of appeal with those conservative white voters….despite the popularity of Slumdog….
JMO – don’t flame me.
The best of the night to me…… Danny and Adam
Worst….. Anoop and Megan
I still miss Ricky!!
Well Steve I agree with you on most opinions, however, ADAM is the bomb, I actually rewind and watch him over and over. Something about his look and his voice, I would love his album, but again I grew up in the 80′s and he is that all day long on the Axel Rose type voice. I love a man that can sore like that. I love Danny Gokey too, his look is very intense in many ways and somewhat serious but sophistocated. ADAM’s look yeah is over the top but who cares, I would love to see it come down to him, Megan and Danny. I love Megan, she is so corny that I just want to do well. I liked Alexis until last night being a slutty thing and all. I think she just lost those middle aged white folk feeling for her little girl look. Anyhow, Go Adam, Danny and Megan (although her song sucked ass).
Oh, about that “twist”. They gave clues, they said it had to do with the judges.
Maybe they will have the ability to “save” someone, and send the next lowest vote getter home…. to prevent the truly talented ones from getting voted off, in favor of flukes like Sanjaya…
Am I the ONLY one who thinks that Jorge looks just like Ben’s Stiller’s potential illegitimate son in “Meet the Fockers”?? No one else sees it? He is the first contestant I can’t watch perform (I look away & listen) b/c it is SOOOO disconcerting.
My guess as to the “twist” is that they are going to use the same format So You Think You Can Dance uses. Bottom 3 sing for their lives & the judges save 2 (they’ll save 1 this week, for double elimination).
Good column RS and not because I almost agree with your thoughts
#7 – I agree with you–Adam sounds like Axl Rose. And I love Axl Rose, then and now. Not many people can do what Axl does with his voice. But Adam is definitely one of them. On the AI boards there is a group of people who like Danny & Adam, called the Gokeberts.
Canada Fan, I think you’re right about the twist…that makes sense. I can totally see them switching to that. That way they actually do something during the results show instead of us having to listen to Ryan drag out the results for an hour….
As a middle aged conservative white woman my favorite on the show is Adam. No one else even comes close. If he leaves the show I don’t know who else I would want to win. I think Adam is the most entertaining of all the performers. I would love to see him sing an Elvis Presley song. Something about him reminds me of Elvis.
I pretty much agree with you on all of your points, Steve. I don’t know what to think about Megan; she has a different voice that I can picture on the radio, but I just don’t get her. I didn’t think she should have been a judge’s pick last week, but knew she would because Simon likes her look. And while I know Adam is very talented, I just don’t like watching him or hearing him. I’m sure he’ll go far, but I doubt he’ll be the last one standing. As we’ve seen in other years, in some ways you might have a more successful career if you don’t have the “Season winner” status hanging over your head, so it’s not necessarily a bad thing to lose. I could be surprised, bit I think Danny has this thing – talent, likable personality, good looking and of course the backstory that has so many rooting for him.
They all have a back story. I hate how they engage on that to make someone appear more talented than others. This is a signing competition not a contest on who has the most SAD story. I mean it is sad, but it is not what the show is about. I am sick of hearing their life stories already, I don’t know about anyone else. I just want to hear them sing now. Adam’s got it, hands down as an awesome performer, and there are thousands of little teenie boppers that will follow his lead.
I am also a middle-aged white woman and love Adam! I think he has amazing stage presence (his theater experience shows) and his vocal control/ tone/ range are incredible. Yes, he’s a bit dark in appearance, but his talent surpasses all.
I’m also conflicted about Megan—she has an interesting voice, but in this case, I’m not sure if her appearance surpasses it. It’s very hard not to focus on her tatoos while she’s singing.
I was also disappointed in Jorge’s song choice—I think his voice is much better than he displayed last night.
We’ll see tonight.
I agree with most of your points. Danny is my man! Dancing is dorky, but
still love the guy. I’m really finding that I’m starting to think great things of
Adam now, go figure.
I think Anoop and Jas should be out.
Steve, wasn’t Mel great on DWTS???? Love her!!
#13- I’m with you; I’m a senior (young senior
) white woman and I really like Adam – think his performance is really great, and being an Elvis fan from back in the day, would love to see him do Elvis.
#8 – You know, I had that thought about the “twist” when they mentioned it; because sometimes a really true talent does leave because of no fan base, and that would make sense to save a truly good singer for perhaps someone who’s more of a novelty.
I also kind of agree with RS – that Paula could go and I think the judges would be more balanced now. She’s too silly; I like the new judge a lot.
I missed some of the show last night. Love the recap. I do like Allisons voice. But I agree with you Steve. Just something with her. Missed the cutting thing last night though. Whats up with that?
Im not sure who I am rooting for yet. Agree with the Paula thing too. She slows the show down I think.
Paula’s on CRACK!!! Plain and simple.
Definitely think Adam and Danny will go far in this competition. I really, really like Matt Giraud though. I think he’s super talented and extremely sexy when he gets on that piano. He does borrow a little too much from Justin Timberlake, but suprisingly he can pull it off…not many people can.
Isn’t there a twist on DWTS this year too? A dance off of the lowest 2?
I think they need to something different this week because of the IDOLS 36 number for the 13th contestant. It is possible that she will get a smaller vote becasue poeple didn’t pay attention to the numbers on the screen. She shouldn’t be penalized for that.
Here is what I would like to see:
The fans will vote and then then the bottom three will be given another chance to sing- perhaps a different song if they made a bad choice last night. The song could be chosen by the judges.
They would have to know in advance that they were the bottom three in order to have time to prepare..but that would make for a better show.
Then the judges will then vote one off (or this week 2)
hey Steve, as much as I disagreed with you on TB, I completely agree with your assessment of AI. Does anyone really know what Paula is on? She was just babbling last night, not that that’s anything new, but jeez, doesn’t she watch herself on replay? My hubby and I got into an argument about Megan, I just love her, she has an unusual voice and a quirky Amy Winehouse-like dance. I enjoyed her performance, but hubby said I’m biased because I like her so much, he said she sucked!?!
Adam is obviously the consummate performer and probably deserves to win, I too am still debating how I felt about his “Satisfaction”, the Stones are my FAV band of all time, so very seldom do I see anyone do them justice. He was one of my early picks from the auditions, but my jury is still out on him(no pun intended).
Allison, to me, a shouter, Jasmine just not ready for prime time yet, Anoop sucked, and Alexis, one of my favs, a little too overdone. Loved Simon’s comment to her-”You weren’t as good as you thought you were”.
I totally disagree with you and the judges regarding Danny’s dancing, it was completely spontaneous looking, not rehearsed, which to me added considerable charm to his great voice, I really like this guy.
My dark horse would be Matt, love his soulful voice, thought he had a really nice, not over the top performance.
Like Adam but at this point I never “know” anyone until we get to the last six or so…
speaking of six, wait I mean SICK…Megan reminds me of a cross between Rebecca D. from Hand that Rocks the Cradle and the chick with the rabbit on the stove …I expect to see a rabbit boiling on Simons stove maybe Kara’s…
speaking of Kara…to me is not quite as annoying as Paula but she reminds me of a SOBER Paula…
speaking of Paula…why is she still on the show? She needs a 12-step program…
5. HomersRealist the “off” thing with Paula was her eyes…they were pulled really tight or something. Yes you could see the work was just done, but she had trouble blinking…MAJOR weird…
Great re-cap. I like Alexis from the girls and Lil. The guys I like Jorge. Alison is too young doesn’t know who she is yet and just weird, her comments are so weird!
Reality Steve~
I started reading your column at the beginning of Jason’s Bachelor season…love it! I don’t actually watch Idol, but re your comment on no other good Idol blogs, you might wanna check out Lisa DeMoraes on WashingtonPost.com. Funny stuff! Y’all compliment each other well. One thing, you don’t need to apologize so much for stating your opinion! Loosen up
I watched Biggest Loser and did not watch American Idol because I feel no one can do Michael Jackson songs but MJ. I try not to get too attached to anyone this early in the show but I do like Danny, Adam, Alexis, Jorge, Anup and Scott. The others not so much at this point. Megan’s tattooed arm is distracting at best and everytime I see her I think– Reese Witherspoons younger sister.
I disagree with Steve about Paula. I believe that she adds a mother hen quality and an encouraging nature to the show- she is the balance to Simon’s brutal honesty. I like both of them. I wish , however, that Paula would get her act together- she seems more over medicated this season so far than any other. Kara pounds on the table alot and is a bit loud but I haven’t really formed a solid like or dislike with her. The one I think the show could do without is Randy and his favorite word dude.
and dog….lol
Based on performances, Megan and Anoop should go home tonight. Simon did mention last week that like so you think you can dance, there will be a “sing off’” of the bottom two. Then the judges will decide. Fair enough. (bottom three this week only)
Steve, I have to completely disagree with you about Kara. I think she has pretty much nothing original to add to the show. It seems like she copies off of a lot of things Randy says and then she makes completely pointless comments like, “What would it be like to go shopping with you?” (Which Simon called her out on) Plus, she makes completely obvious points, such as when Ryan asked her what Jasmine needed to do to make it in through the Wild Card round and she said, “You need to wow us vocally” or something like that. Really? Gosh, I’m sure Jasmine never thought of that!
As for Adam, I am not middle aged but I am a conservative white woman who voted for Adam. And honestly, I was very tempted to vote for Alexis Grace because as a younger mother of a young child I was very touched by the part about her daughter but I just thought Adam deserved it the most. And I hope you’re wrong about Jorge going home. He is such a born performer and I’d like to see him get another chance to prove himself.
Lastly, I agree with gradstudent11 – quit apologizing so much for giving us your opinion! It’s your blog, we’re reading it to get your opinion!
Megan Corkery’s “Rockin Robin” was easily one of the worst Idol performances ever. I hadn’t seen her perform before, so I didn’t have any feelings toward her, and so I don’t get why the judges were trying to make something of it. It was terrible. But the performances was fun to watch in its awfulness. If I had to rank the all-time top Idol performances that were cringeworthy but I loved to watch, they would be:
1. Chicken Little’s “Part Time Lover”
2. Sanjaya’s “You Really Got Me” (the crying-girl song)
3. Megan Corkery’s “Rockin Robin.”
At least with Megan I did see some talent in there. She’ll probably survive and hopefully someone will help her out with song choices.
I agree that Adam Lambert’s performance was by far the best. The way he changed up the song to fit his style reminded me of David Cook last year doing “Hello” by Lionel Richie early on and establishing himself as a contender and future star.
Steve, you know I want some DwtS columns… bring it on! And of course, I’m watching Surviror too. I vote no on Celeb Apprentice though… I’m already over seeing those annoying “stars”.
As for Idol, am I the only one who thinks it is ridiculous that they have “Michael Jackson week” then proceed to beat up the performers for singing songs that can’t be touched because of the orginal artist? Then they had the audacity to tell Scott he should have picked a more popular song, WTF! It is close to impossible to make popular Jacko songs your own. So chosing something less well known makes more sense to me. I’m just glad nobody sang Thriller. I love Danny too, but Alexis is at the top of my list of faves. Allison has kind of a “Pink” quality to her. I don’t think she’ll stick around on this show long, but she has potential do become big elsewhere.
I’m so happy your’e writing an AI blog….YAY!!! now please do the Celebrity Apprentice and Survivor – do it.
I am a GRANDMOTHER and I totally rewound Adam’s performance last night about 8 times!!!! He’s the winner – period. It’ll come down to him and Danny. No doubt.
Should be a fun season especially reading YOU the day after.
Speaking of overused phrases, how about ‘you didn’t connect with the song’?
Liking Danny a lot. Adam is really good, but just not my cup of tea. None of the girls really appeal to me yet.
Can’t wait to hear what the big news is regarding judging.
Wow…I almost deleted my link to here after all the bashing and sniping from TB and Mel fans, but after reading Steve’s blog, I agree 100% with everything he said! Shock! lol My favorites are the same as Steve and his predictiions make sense. I didn’t know Adam was into the drag and is gay? Oh ,well, I liked Clay and always thought he might go both ways. And that’s so true about the best singer not winning. Chris Daugherty and Clay were screwed and I thought it was a joke when Taylor Hicks and Reuben won.
Great review, RS…keep them coming. Now if my opinion can be respected or ignored as Steve has asked members to do instead of arguing, this will be a wonderful place to post. Thanks.
Shelley #35 – great point! Seems the contestants can’t win. Pick a popular song and it’s a mistake, pick an obscure one, also a mistake. ?????
Does a nyone else think Kara sounds and looks alittle like she could be Julia Roberts cousin??
I am glad that I wasn’t the only one thinking that Kara spoke differently to Lil. And, she’s done it every week.
I want to like Megan because I think her voice is unique. But, there is something just a little bit awkward about the whole package. And, her song choice didn’t help in that regard.
I’ve never gotten the Anoop thing. He seems to be popular though, so he’ll probably stay this week. I am also not feeling Jorge or Scott. I know Scott is a great story, but I just don’t think he’s singing is that great.
I love Amber, Matt, Danny. Adam is in a league of his own so he doesn’t count.
Steve your blog is pretty amazing.
Here goes my spill on Idol…
I disagree about Kara. Maybe it is because I’m a female and don’t find her to be hot? ha She seems to mimic everything Randy says. Also, anytime she goes first it seems that she says what she thinks the other judges will say. I know she has a lot of experience in the music biz, but I just think she is not a good, honest judge. IMO, Paula is not anywhere near as annoying as she was the past two seasons. Maybe it is because Kara annoys me so much that Paula seems normal. I think it is good for the show and the contestants to have someone looking at the positive and not so much the negative.
I LOVE Mr. Sarver! I was so amazed listening to him last night. He is definitely my favorite. Will he win? hmm no I don’t think so. I sent about 50 text messages for him though.
I actually enjoyed Megan’s performance. It was fun to watch. It was a strange song choice though. I think it would have been tough to pick an MJ song though. Anyone have any ideas of what she should have sang?
Scott is truly inspiring. He deserves this more than any of them. Well Danny does too!
I am probably one of the few who do not like Adam. He is a good performer, but his voice is just so weird to me. and his eyeliner doesn’t help either…
GP41…no. Julia Roberts? I don’t see that honestly.
allijross , Kara also ‘got her groove on’ when she would speak to Ju’Not (Group 3-Semi Final Round). Whose Amber?
I just wanted to clarify after reading some of the other posts and then re-reading my original….I fall into the group of “middle aged conservitive white women” and I my post reads worse then I intended. I like Anoop, and Adam. Anoop, a likeable fellow who made a poor choice. Adam, I would have liked him to sing “Out of my Life” or “Human Nature” but I think he wanted something uptempo. He was okay but I can see myself getting tired of him hitting that same high note in every song he sings…
Oh totally agree on the reference to Pink (Allison) I think she could do Pink’s songs justice, especially the one playing on the radio….love it! Maybe that’s more her “type” and she’d be more comfortable and have to scream less….LOL
I also think Alexis is a front runner and it sucked that she ended up singing last. She was rushed with the time constraints and didn’t get her dues from the judges, plus the whole phone number thingy….
Tonight will be interesting!
RS! I’m so glad your’e doing AI recaps! I have been a fan ever since season 1 and have only ONCE failed to predict the winner. (Maybe we should wager a ltitle money…) I think your analysis was pretty much spot on, but I think Kris might still emerge as a dark horse. I think he has some coming out of his shell to do still, but I’ve got a nigglin’ feeling… Also, I was disappointed by Megan’s song choice too. BUT, I fear not, because historically, other than KC and CU, the non-winners have had more commerical success than the winners. And, she’s definitely got that bluesy Nelly Furtado-like tone to her voice.
Cool you talk Idol too.
I didn’t watch the show last night. For some reason I wasn’t interested (and earlier in the day I wanted to see Michael Jackson night). But got to work today and a co-worker ranted and raved about Adam. So I had to take a peek. Didn’t hear any of the judges commentary (I prefer it that way anyway). Before I picked my favorite, decided I wanted to be informed and see all the singers. Keep in mind, I’ve only seen bits and pieces before last night.
Adam Lambert – Black and White. Dear freaking God! He is well on his way to becoming my favorite AI ever (yes even bypassing David Cook – though I’m still a Cookie through and through).
Lil Round – stupid name (I’m just not into cutesy names for singers – especially those not established in the industry). Back to her song choice. The Way You Make Me Feel. Didn’t like the vocal. She has a whiny undertone to her voice. No range (at least on this song). Great stage presence though. (but what was with the mom pants!). Pants pulled up to her boobs? Ugh!
Kris Allen – Remember the Time. Kinda liked the guitar. Didn’t really go with the song though. And I could hardly hear it. I liked his vocal. Nice. (and he sure is pretty too!) And it was obvious he was having a great time on the stage. Always fun to see. Not memorable – the only way I remember him now is by remembering the guitar.
Jorge Nunez – Never Can Say Goodbye. Not liking the whole sway thing he does. Vocal ok. Nothing memorable.
Scott MacIntrye – Keep the Faith. The song obviously means something to him. Just felt more emotional than any of the other performances – and his performance was much more quieter. Loved the vocal.
Alexis Grace – Dirty Diana. I liked a lot. Great vocal. Great undertone (no whiny). My favorite female.
Michael Sarver – You Are Not Alone. Good. Not memorable – though better than my other “non-memorable” performers (Kris, Jorge, Matt).
Jasmine Murray – I’ll Be There. Could not find the video for some reason. Her vocal is very nice though. I think she is also young? Good song choice for her. Jeez – she could hold that long note forever!
Megan Joy Corkery – Rockin Robin. No. Just no. She started out like she was having fun (and if you sing a song like that you better look like you are having fun). Bout mid way through she looked like she was done with the song. Fought through it (I give her credit for that). But easily the worse song choice of the night.
Danny Gokey – PYT (Pretty Young Thing). One of my favorite Jackson songs, so I’m glad someone chose to sing it. Nice!!! I liked a lot. I like the husky undertone to his voice. Hope that is normal, and not a sore throat (it almost had that sound to it). But he’s got a nice soulful style. I’m looking forward to Motown week with him.
Matt Giraud – Human Nature I think? Pretty. That’s about it. I found his performance dull and the song boring (but I’m not a fan of it anyway). Good voice – which given he is the final 13 he better have a good voice. Nothing memorable though. Not remotely close to Danny or Adam.
Allison Iraheta – Give in to Me. Good vocal. I like her rocker voice. But I wish she would have gone with a different song. Kinda disturbing for a 16 year old to sing that (but I’m being a prude I’m sure). Hated the outfit (loved the hair color though).
Anoop Desai Beat It – I watched a few notes of it on the show last night and switched channels. Decided I would give him a full shot this time. Nothing changed – it was still pretty darn awful. I didn’t see his past auditions, but based on just that performance I can see why Simon now wishes they had not gone with a final 13.
Bottom 2 – Anoop and Megan. Though one of the non-memorables could easily go as well.
So did I change my mind? Nope. Adam still my favorite by a mile. Though Danny is quite good as well and I’m hoping they are the final 2.
I love to watch Danny sing. You can tell that he feels the music to his core, and he has so much joy about him when he sings. Go Danny!!!
lesanel:
“Anyone have any ideas of what she should have sang?”
How about “Liberian Girl”….
I’d never heard of it and just saw the video for the first time…how bizarre….
http://music.aol.com/video/liberian-girl/michael-jackson/sony:13406403
Seriously she should have sang “Never Can Say Goodbye”
I think the twist may be that the home viewers pick the bottom 3 and the judges pick the 1 or 2 that go home. This is how it is done on So You Think You Can Dance. I think that they have the same producers for both shows.
I too disagree with Steve regarding Paula/Kara. Last year I couldn’t stand Paula, she was totally weird and just told everybody how wonderful they were. This year however, there’s been a turn-around, and although still somewhat quirky, she’s been offering some very astute and constructive commentary. She’s got a warm, nurturing quality about her and identifies with the contestants more than the other judges do. I think the show would be boring without her, plus it’s a hoot watching her flirting with Simon.
I don’t think the addition of Kara has brought much to the table. She’s a gorgeous woman and knows her music inside out, but she’s a little long-winded at times and I find her to be rather bland in her comments. If any of the judges were to leave, to me it should be Kara. JMHO
hope to see
1- Adam
2-Danny
3-Anoop
as final 3 and hope to see Adam wins the whole thing.
