First “Reality Roundup” in quite some time. At least six months or so. Gonna cover some “Bachelor” news, along with thoughts on “Survivor”, “Dancing with the Stars”, and the “Apprentice”. Of course, most of you want to know the “Bachelor” stuff, so I’ll start with that first.
Last weekend, the “Bachelor” with Brad Womack started filming, despite what he said on “Ellen” Tuesday. Already, they can’t keep their stories straight. Chris Harrison went on Ryan Seacrest Tuesday morning and said filming had started over the weekend. Brad told “Ellen” Tuesday (filmed Monday) that he hadn’t met any of the girls yet. Don’t know why he lied, but yeah, filming started last weekend. Way too early in the process to know what’s gone down yet, and to be honest, if you expect me to top what I did last year, you’re going to be disappointed. I’ll report what I know when I know it, but I don’t think I’m gonna have every girls’ first and last name, every date, order of elimination, etc laid out before ABC releases the head shots this time around. I just don’t see it happening. I’m sure I’ll know stuff here and there, but last season was about as good as it’ll get. I’m a little busier this time around, and honestly, I don’t care about telling you dates and eliminations beforehand. I’d rather redeem myself and spoil who he picks in the end, and hopefully the final four, just days after it happens. I think I’ll be able to manage that this season.
With that said, I have found out a little background on one of our contestants this season. How? Well because she works in Frisco, Texas. Hey! That’s where I live! Nice job, ABC. Thanks for that lay-up. Her name is Lindsay Hill and she is a first grade teacher at Allen Elementary here in Frisco, which is less than a 5 minute drive from me. Well, she WAS a first grade teacher. She resigned her position a couple weeks ago to go film the show. And as of two days ago, her profile and picture were still up on Allen Elementary’s First Grade website. But it’s now been taken down since, well, she doesn’t teach there anymore. Before her profile got taken down, I was able to see a few pictures and she definitely is an attractive redhead. However, there is still a group picture up there. UPDATE: Someone just emailed me a link to Lindsay’s old profile that was still able to view in the cache. I have no idea what that means since I’m computer illiterate, but whatever. Here’s the profile that was taken down a couple days ago:
I’ve already given you my thoughts on Brad as the “Bachelor”, and they haven’t changed. I’m perfectly fine with it, the show knows how much attention it will draw, and I expect the ratings to be pretty much the same as they have been the last few seasons. Those still crying that it’s not Chris Lambton, I told you it was his if he wanted it, but turned it down. Here’s Chris Harrison’s explanation in an interview he did with TVGuide.com:
TVGuide.com: Why isn’t Chris L. the Bachelor?
Chris Harrison: Ali’s season ended phenomenally with Chris L. as the No. 2 guy and our immediate thought was obviously Chris L.’s the guy. The more he kept thinking about it and we kept thinking about it, he realized he wasn’t going to be right for it. A great guy, which Chris L. is, doesn’t necessarily make a great bachelor. I think he realized it, we realized it we and ultimately decided to go our separate ways. (Reality Steve Note: Not to mention, Chris is involved with Peyton now, so it’d kinda defeat the purpose if he did the show).
TVGuide.com: What about Ty?
Harrison: If you use someone from last year’s show, it needed to be Chris. He’s not going to do it so it’s like, “You asked for it, you got it, it’s … Ty.” That didn’t feel right.
Also, when asked about the upcoming season and whether he thinks people will tune in because of the negative backlash Brad has gotten, Chris showed what a huge fan of RealitySteve.com he is by essentially mimmicking what I wrote last week:
TVGuide.com: Are you worried about alienating fans who are displeased with this decision?
Harrison: Of course. Every Monday night I’m sleepless before I get up Tuesday and find that the same people that watched [last week] are back again. You can never take for granted that people are going to watch our show; the moment you do, you’re dead. Even though there is some backlash to this decision, there is still a lot of interest. It’s been one of the most talked-about decisions we’ve made. Some of that, maybe even the majority right now, is negative and against it or at least skeptical of him, but if we had gone with a real estate agent from New Mexico? Would anyone have cared? As much as people will scream and say, “I’m never watching again” or “I don’t like Brad,” people are going to show up to sample what this guy is all about. Then it’s up to Brad and the producers and storytellers to create a good show and draw you in.
People are going to tune in just for the sheer curiosity factor as to the girls reactions when they find out it’s Brad that’s the bachelor, and how he explains to the girls what a dbag he acted like the first time around. I love Chris’ last sentence: “Then it’s up to Brad and the producers and storytellers to create a good show and draw you in.” Man, they’re practically admitting now that the show is contrived. If they just set up the cameras and hit “record” and whatever happens happens, then they wouldn’t need to be referencing “storytellers”. But hey, I think being 21 seasons in to this show, if you don’t know by now that this show isn’t laid out on a storyboard with characters and forced situations, then you’ll never know.
I’m not gonna say I don’t like the new season, it’s still early, but when you’re coming off two consecutive seasons of Russell, and then arguably one of the best seasons ever of “Heroes vs Villains”, it’s pretty tough to top that by going back to the “Old vs Young” format. I’m sure once we get in to the thick of things and the backstabbing and lying and betrayal starts, it’ll get more interesting, but right now, it’s just tough because of the previous seasons they just came off. Too many “blah” characters so far. I really don’t give a damn about half of them right now, and the fact that Jimmy Johnson already got booted is probably something CBS wasn’t too thrilled about. The older tribe were idiots for targeting him so early. He wasn’t a physical threat whatsoever, he was the only leader in camp, and they seem to be lost without him. Not a very likable bunch that older tribe. Hell, outside of Fabio and maybe a couple others, there really don’t seem to be many likable people on this season period. Naonka? What a ball of sunshine she is. I really hope she leaves this show ASAP. I can’t deal with that attitude much longer.
In case you didn’t know, for the last two seasons, “Survivor” now films it’s fall and spring shows in the same location, back-to-back. “Heroes vs Villains” was filmed 10 days after “Samoa” ended, so both were in the can before “Samoa” even premiered. Same thing this season. They just finished filming Season 22 in Nicaragua, and word is, Boston Rob and Russell are a part of it somehow. Plenty of spoiler sites out there to find out more details, but it looks like a done deal. RealityBlurred.com has the most accurate details that I’ve seen thus far, but since the “Bachelor” is the only show I care to give spoilers on, I pretty much stay away from the other ones. But plan on seeing Boston Rob and Russell on next season in some capacity. I thought it might be a little too early to bring them back yet again, but it looks like the Spring edition of “Survivor” from here on out will have some sort of all-star feel to it. By casting Boston Rob and Russell, no matter what their role is, it’s already infinitely more exciting than this season. Hey, I’ll give this season time to develop and I’m sure by the end I’ll be excited, but right now, I’m very “whatever” about it.
“Dancing with the Stars”
I know when the cast was first announced, I commented about how Jennifer Grey was unrecognizable with her new face. And she is. She looks completely different than she did in 1987. With that said, she’s a MILF. And I don’t think there’s a single person watching this show that doesn’t want her, and expect her, to win. Sure Kyle Massey is entertaining, and Rick Fox has been better than advertised, and Bristol Palin is actually coming off as likable, but if we’re talking about who can actually win the title, Jennifer Grey is the only chance. She’s going to win this thing because all women want to see her win it, and women are the ones who vote. Honestly, have you known any male to ever vote on this show? Me neither. I don’t think I’ve ever voted for any show that requires a call-in, and I watch plenty of them. Oh wait, I think I voted on “Last Comic Standing” once back in season 2.
Speaking of “Last Comic Standing”, real quick condolences on the passing of Greg Giraldo, a judge on this past season. Anyone that has read this column frequently enough knows how big a fan I am of stand up comedy. Been watching it since I was a kid and Greg Giraldo has always been one of my favorite. I could probably recite most of his lines from the recent “Comedy Central Roasts” of David Hasselhoff, Pam Anderson, and Flavor Flav. I saw the guy perform about two months ago here in Dallas and he killed. Great set, had the crowd rolling, and was easily one of the top 5 performances I’d ever seen live. The guy was a recovering alcoholic that had been off the wagon for a while now, but apparently his demons caught back up with him and he overdosed. The “Comedy Central Roasts” will never be the same without this guy and he will be missed.
Can we stop already with this “controversy” surrounding Michael Bolton and Bruno? Really? The guy is that hurt by what Bruno said? Grow a pair. Did Bruno offer constructive criticism? No. Did he probably embarrass the guy by telling him it was the worst jive in 11 seasons? Yes. But that’s what you sign up for. You are there to dance and the judges are there to judge and say whatever they want. Frankly, it WAS the worst dance in the history of that show. All Bruno did was point it out. Bruno telling Michael Bolton that is no different than Simon berating some idiot singer during auditions on “Idol”. Same exact thing. Sure they’re embellishing it for TV because they know it’ll get a reaction, but it was true. The dance was embarrassing, and Bruno called him out for it. Deal with it. It’s nothing personal, he just said your dance sucked. He didn’t say you haven’t been working hard. He didn’t say you weren’t trying your best. He just said the end result wasn’t very good. I don’t see why this is even an issue and now Bolton wants a public apology. For what? Telling the truth?
You know what the biggest reaction was when this cast was announced? “What a bunch of losers”, “How are these people ‘stars’?”, “Worst cast ever”, etc. Yeah, and the premiere drew 21 million people. Last week drew 22 million. Hence the reason that the “Bachelor’s” ratings aren’t going anywhere either. In fact, the more negative reaction that keeps rolling in for Brad’s season, the more I know people will be tuning in. And lets not forget, once the tabloids start in with their “Brad/Wes/Laurel” love triangle storylines, it’ll draw even more people in to the show. I don’t really know any details other than Brad and Wes both dated the same girl at some time in their lives, and that’s Laurel. The girl that they claim was Wes’ girlfriend while he filmed Jillian’s season, which she wasn’t. That’s all the tabloids need to start making up stuff and putting it in their headlines. It’s coming, to get ready for it.
Even though it’s been a few years since they had a non-celebrity edition of the “Apprentice” on air, I was still curious to see if I liked this show. Apparently I’m the only one since NO ONE is watching. The ratings for the first three weeks have been dreadful. No idea what to chalk it up to since it’s basically the exact same show as it’s always been. I guess people like the celebrity version a lot better. I definitely do, but this season has potential. That David character is straight up weird, but intriguing all at the same time. Mahsa is basically this season’s loudmouth Omarosa. I think the whole “recession” storyline with these people isn’t working because we don’t know how bad it’s hit them, we were just told it did. Maybe later this season they’ll fill us in more on these people’s backgrounds and how badly they were affected by losing their jobs, but so far, it’s pretty much been on the back burner. I’ll keep watching, but I’m more looking forward to the next celebrity edition.
To follow me on Twitter (you know, so you can hear “exclusives” first), it’s: www.twitter.com/RealitySteve. All other ways to get a hold of me are in the “Contact Me” link at the top of the page. As a heads up, my facebook page has been acting up recently, and I wanted to announce that some time in the near future, I’m going to be deleting a lot of people off it. I just get way too much riff raff on there and people carrying on arguments on my wall that it just gets annoying. Everyone can still join my facebook fan page, but I need to cut out a lot of the “friends” on my page since it’s starting to get cluttered and I don’t know about 90% of them. So if you’ve been a friend for a while but I have no idea who you are, I’m sorry. I need to limit it to people I actually know and have had contact with before. Hope you understand. See you all next week.
