For episode-by-episode spoilers of Brad’s season, click on the link above that says “Bachelor Brad Spoilers” (it’s like, 1″ inch above this sentence. Twice). It has a breakdown of every date, rose, and elimination, all the way down to Brad’s final choice. However, there will be spoilers in this column about Monday’s episode. You’ve been warned.
I’m loving the reaction from yesterday’s news that Ashley is the next “Bachelorette”. EXACTLY what I expected. Some of you love it, and some of you hate it. Some of you say you can’t wait til her seasons starts, others say they can’t stand her and won’t watch. Whatever. Put it this way, if Brad F***ing Womack’s ratings can go up for 5 straight weeks, and his viewership hit all-time season high this past Monday night, then Ashley will be just fine. Anyone who says, “I don’t like her, therefore, I’m not watching” is just blowing hot air. First off, no one cares that you’re not gonna watch. A) Because we know you will and B) on the odd chance you do stick to your word and don’t watch, what does it matter? Millions of others will. So running to a message board or my facebook wall to tell people you hate this choice and aren’t gonna watch is like “So?” People watch every season no matter who the lead is and it will be no different when Ashley’s season rolls around. You’re watching for the drama, the dates, the guys, the scandal, and the faux love story. You’re not watching because who the lead is. Brad’s season pretty much proved that.
I mean christ, how many people after Brad was announced said “Oh my God. Why him? Why does he deserve a second chance? Isn’t that the guy who picked no one? Couldn’t they find anybody better?” On and on and on and on people went, yet 10 million people watched Monday’s episode. So you honestly think they care who they have as a lead? The fans of this show are sheep. They’ll follow anything as long as you give them the formula they’ve gotten for the last 21 seasons. Same sh**, different day. I think Ashley will be fine. Cute girl, bubbly personality (much more so than Emily), outgoing, fun, talks with her hands (ha ha), drinks like a fish, and will have no problem tonguing down as many guys as possible. Just remember this: In what will be the 7th installment of the “Bachelorette” (Trista, Meredith, Jen, DeAnna, Jillian, and Ali), NONE of them were model type bombshells. All good looking, girl next door looks that women can relate to. They would never cast a runway model with fake cans and who looks like she can be a pin up girl in that role. For the most part, women hate women. They don’t want to watch some smoking hot model chick as the lead because it’s not believable. They want someone the audience can relate to and all those past women, including Ashley, fit that role. There is NOTHING intimidating looks-wise about Ashley, and that’s EXACTLY what they want.
As you know, the “Women Tell All” is taping today. Obviously Ashley will be there, as the audience in attendance gets shown Monday’s night episode in advance before they bring the women out, therefore that’s how they’re able to justify having Ashley there to answer questions. As of right now, I should be getting information from the taping, I just don’t know if it’ll be tonight or tomorrow morning. It might get to me tonight but I won’t be able to post it til tomorrow morning. We’ll see. If I don’t write anything at all, then you know nothing major happened. I don’t expect anything too wild considering we know Ashley goes home on Monday, but, it would be nice to know a little of what went down in South Africa. Because as you know, I don’t know much other than Ashley leaving and the final outcome. So, check back here later tonight or early tomorrow for any new update on what happened at the tapings.
And finally, Shawntel had her exit interview this week which you can read right here courtesy of WetPaint.com. Definitely an interesting read, although I still don’t really buy she was happy with having half of her hometown date spent at a funeral home. Even when someone asked her whose idea that was, hers or the producers, she said “a little bit of both”. Translation: That was their call, I just went along with it. A lot of you have emailed and tweeted me saying you would’ve liked to have seen Shawntel as the next “Bachelorette”. And honestly, I wouldn’t have minded that either. Seems to fit all the criteria I mentioned above. I just think that the creepiness factor of her job just wouldn’t have been appealing to most guys, who during the audition process, are thinking along the lines of it being someone like Emily, or Michelle, or whatever. With all due respect to Shawntel, if they get out of the limo on the first night and she was standing there, I think there’d be a bit of a let down. Hell, why do you think they kept from telling the ladies it’d be Brad this time around until they arrived the first night. Anyway, lets get started with this weeks emails…
I know a lot of you think the casting process is you send in an application, if they like you they call you up, you come in for a couple 10-15 minute interviews, they run a couple tests, then they make their decision. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Listen to how extensive the process is from the time you first apply til the time you step foot out of the limo on the first night. I had to go to a former contestant on the show to get this info. I knew it was extensive, but this blew me away. Here’s what they said how it breaks down:
“1. I went to a casting call in a certain city, so for me, it started with filling out a brief 30 question questionnaire. I handed that in, then waited in a waiting room with everyone else trying out. When they called my name, I went into a small room with a chair for me, chair for the producer, and a camera set up on me. She used my questionnaire to ask me questions, and it took all of 5 minutes, and that was it.
2. About 2 weeks later, I got a phone call telling me I had made it to the next round. All you have to do for round 2 is fill out a 30 page background form, and mail it to them with a few photos.
a) On this, you had to give 20 contacts (name, address, phone, and email)
b) Questions such as: have you been arrested, have you done a porn, etc.
3. About a month and a 1/2 later, I got a phone call saying I had once again, made it to the next round. At this point, they were flying me out to LA for the casting weekend. They told me nothing, other than to pack something nice, along with some other casual clothes. Once I landed, I would hop on the hotel shuttle and someone would greet me at the hotel.
a) Once I got to the hotel, they checked me in, and had a handler bring me to my room. I was told never to leave the room for ANY reason, unless a handler has come to take me.
b) Later that night, someone came in and brought me a 1000 question personality test, along with another 30 page questionnaire.
i. The personality test had questions like: do you hear voices in your head, have you ever had suicidal thoughts, etc.
ii. The questionnaire had questions like: what is your biggest fear, when was the last time you were in love.
c) That was it for the first night. I never left the room.
d) Day two, someone came by to grab me in the afternoon for an interview
i. They take you into another hotel room, where again, a camera is set up and a producer interviewed me for about 10 minutes. Afterwards you walk into the connecting hotel room and sit in front of a panel of people (Martin Hilton, Kerri-Leigh, and about 5 other producers. Very intimidating)
ii. They ask you questions for about 15 minutes then you head back to your room.
e) After those interviews you are brought in to talk with a private investigator for about an hour. She tries to pull everything out of your past that could possibly come and bite you in the ass later.
f) After the PI, you meet with a psychologist. She has the results from the personality test you took the night before, and has more of a conversation with you.
g) After that you go to take a blood test. They draw blood and get a urine sample, and then you head back to your room.
h) All of that takes about 3 hours…and then you sit, once again, in your room the rest of the night
i) The next morning you hop on the shuttle again and are heading home. I never once saw another contestant during casting weekend.
4. About 2 weeks later, I got the call that I was cast for the show. Up until the show films, you are assigned a producer who checks in on you every couple of days, answers any questions, etc.
5. When you fly out for filming, you are taken by a car service to a hotel out in Malibu. Once again, I never saw another contestant and sat in the hotel for 3 days.
a) The first night, producers come by every now and then to pump you up for the experience.
b) The second day, you take your “profile” photo and have one, on-camera interview. This is just a pre-interview where your describe yourself, etc.
c) The 3rd day is the rose ceremony day. You get ready at 9 am, they film you in your hotel “prepping” in the afternoon, then you head down to greet 4 other contestants that you share a limo with later that night.”
Holy crap. Is this for entrance into the CIA or a stupid reality dating show? Good God. I love the lengths that these people go to so that all these secrets are kept, then I come around and piss all over their parade. Fun times.
ok. so here goes my question. brad’s blog on people.com – does he really write it without censor from the bachelor/ette’s production? here’s the thing, i firmly believe also that chantal is the winner, but the brad’s blog is getting me confused. since if you will check ali’s blog from way back, her inclination towards roberto is very apparent . but in brad’s blogs, he hardly expressed anything that will at least clue us in as to how much he cares for chantal. conversely, it’s the other way around when he speaks of emily. moreover, he mentioned before that supposedly we will see love grow in the last episode. and in the last, he was open with emily but seemed closed up in relation to chantal.
i’ll cut it at that one query since this is my first email. hopefully, you can shed some light into my confusion.
Comment: This stuff gets asked every season, and it’s different every season honestly. Especially when they know what spoilers are already out there. I really haven’t paid attention much to anything Brad says publicly, one way or another, because that’s all monitored and he’s coached on knowing what he can and can’t say. Is he the one writing the blog? Of course he is. But don’t think for a second he just hands it in without some power above him looking it over to make sure he didn’t say anything he’s not supposed to.
I told you from the beginning of Jake’s season he was with Vienna. How many of you doubted me that whole season? By the edit she was getting, and the things Jake was saying in all his interviews while it was airing, you remember? None of you were convinced I was right, and even the ones that did believe me that he picked Vienna in the end were convinced they had broken up through all the bad press she was getting. Sure, it’s easy to look back now because hindsight is 20/20 and pick and choose things that he said which would lead you to believe he gave something away in his answers. But while it was going on, trust me I fielded the emails every day of that season on how much I was an idiot, and I was wrong, and no way he picked Vienna, blah blah blah. There are two VERY important factors to keep in mind while watching this show:
1) NEVER let the editing of the show determine who you think they’ve chosen based on what they said or did on dates. They have plenty of time to edit down episodes and create an illusion of what they want the viewer to believe happened.
2) NEVER put too much stock into anything the lead says to the media while the show is airing. They are coached extensively on what to do and how to handle questions. I do not care about anything Brad has said, pro or con, about Chantal and Emily since the season ended. You will drive yourself to an insane asylum if you try to pick out things here and there that he said about each girl. It’s an effort in futility if you ask me, so don’t bother.
(random question) If you could, would you take the Bachelor, the Bachelorette and the Bachelor Pad off the air?
Comment: And lose the second income I’m making off this show? Are you kidding me? I hope this show goes on for another 20 seasons. I’d be an idiot not to want that. I’m riding this wave as long as I can. I know it’ll end at some point, but for the time being, this is a blast.
