So my flight to Vegas didn’t have Wifi on Thursday, and I forgot to save the “Reader Emails” to my desktop before I left. Once I landed, the last thing I wanted to do was sit in my hotel room answering some of these mind numbing questions, so I just decided to include the “Reader Emails” into today’s column. So these were questions sent in all last week, but also include any that were sent in Thursday through last night. Enjoy.
heres my question: Has any of the bachelor/bachlorettes/contestants etc. ever went to court for not holding up to the contract they sign? I mean these contracts just seem so stupid? I know its in the best interest of the show to want all there contestants, bachlor/bachlorettes to be at there control but REALLY, how are these contracts enforced? What happens when they do break the contract? besides higher rating and controversy what more could you ask for.
Comment: Nope. Never happened. And never will. These contracts are used as a scare tactic to the contestants. They hold a $5 million lawsuit over their heads for revealing any information regarding the show, yet, 22 seasons in now, and over 500 people on this show, and not one contestants has ever been sued for that $5 million. So none of them have ever said a word to anybody – family, friends, etc? Oh, ok. It’s a lame contract that they use to scare the contestants with not to talk, but they’d never sue any of them.
All you need to look at is the three interviews I’ve done in the past. Rated “R” Rego, Rozlyn, and Wes all did interviews with me WHILE the show was still on, ripping the show, revealing show secrets and telling behind-the-scenes stuff of what happened, and not only did nothing happen to them other than a slap on the wrist and not letting them appear at the “Tell All” show for their season (except Rozlyn), they’ve all been brought back on TV for “Bachelor Pad” (except Rozlyn, who would’ve been on either season of “BP” if she had agreed to do it. They wanted her but she said no). So yeah, they might get in a tad of trouble and told not to talk for a while, but ultimately, nothing happens to them since they’re a good publicity tool for the show.
You just answered in your column that the dudes all travel together, usually with Chris. The lead on a different plane. But this doesn’t apply to the final three, right? You have said before that the contestants don’t see each other after hometowns to avoid, you know, crosscontamination . . . so I assume that means they’re not on 12-hours flights together when they’d have the chance to compare notes, right? So the final three guys take separate flights? Or they’re on the same flight and their handlers keep them from talking? Just wondering. Not a huge deal but now I’m curious.
Comment: No. Final three guys fly out at staggered times. Not even the same day either. So it’s just them and a handler, and they’re brought out in a particular order.
This one was sent to me before last Monday’s episode obviously….
I didn’t see anywhere on your website who is supposed to show up on the
Monday episode. Who do you think it is? Brad? god forbid Bentley?
Comment: Yes, it was Brad. Because we all know how important a role Brad has played this season. Bentley? A good guess but, well, not when the spoilers have been sitting up on the site for two months telling you who was going to reappear in Fiji.
hey steve, hope all’s well.
it’s interesting to hear your appreciation of “the sports guy” bill simmons. your writing style certainly reminds me of his. i suppose i’d like him more, but his anti-lakers stance is a deal-breaker.
here’s my premise/question: despite your cynical-often-crossing-into-acerbic musings from episode-to-episode and season-to-season, is it fair to state without hesitation that you, like the rest of us loyal readers/fans, ACTUALLY LIKE THE SHOW? if i’m correct, that would make your site a true LABOR OF LOVE (and perhaps profit).
continuing along those lines, do you ever fear that your site may lead to the show’s demise sooner than later? while you correctly opine that the show continues to win among certain key demographics, you would acknowledge that its ABSOLUTE viewership has declined this season. certainly BP2 may be entertaining, but with no clearcut slam-dunk male lead for this fall yet, i myself have concerns.
in short, could you ever see yourself changing your style/format if you thought it would perpetuate its lifespan?
how would you react if/when the franchise ends? As hans gruber so eloquently stated, “When Alexander [the Great] saw the breadth of his domain he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer.”
keep up the good work.
Comment: If you read the interview link on the first page, you can see this question was addressed. No, I don’t like it. It’s a job at this point. I can name 15-20 shows on TV that I find much more entertaining than this nonsense, however, I know where my bread is buttered. So yeah, I’m well aware I’ve become the de facto authority on this and people expect me to be on top of the ball when it comes to this show. I’d say I’ve done a pretty good job when it’s come to that over the last 5 seasons when I’ve gotten into the spoiler aspect of it.
And I couldn’t be more clear about this point: What I do absolutely DOES NOT affect the shows viewership or ratings. If anything, it makes it better. Which is the main reason I think, well, I know that they’ve never contacted me to stop me from doing what I’m doing. Besides the fact that I’m not doing anything wrong and there’s nothing they really can do, why would they stop me? Just because I lay every episode out and give the spoilers doesn’t mean people aren’t watching. I’ve done it four seasons in a row now and the ratings are just fine, so, it just proves that what I do only adds to the intrigue of the show. Nothing I do affects the show in a negative way in terms of ratings or viewership.
I’m sure I’ll find another medium to cover once the show ultimately meets its demise, but honestly, I don’t think it’s happening anytime soon.
Hey Steve! Love your blog and the spoilers and have been a long time reader. I would also like to thank you for edu-ma-cating me (and others) on the reality of “reality TV” While I was never a “sheep” and believed everything I saw on TV, I didn’t realize the extent that producers go to get their “soundbites.”
FINALLY, I have a question. Is the Bachelor/ette a smoke free zone? I’ve noticed that no one on the Bach/ette has ever smoked or has been shown to smoke. (Unlike Survivor or Big Brother) Yes, we all know that smokers are the scourge of society and that it is a major deal breaker when dating, yet we never see that on the show? What/why do you think that is?
Thanks for your time.
Comment: Over 500 contestants have been on this show. I’m guessing a few of them are smokers, but where would they do it on this show? On a 1-on-1 date? During a group date? I don’t see the point of why that’d be important to show to viewers.
can you please tell me why Ashley always fixes her bangs? especially when she’s crying?
Comment: Sorry, I’m not a woman who has bangs and cries a lot. I have no idea. Great question though. I truly am amazed at what some people are curious about. And not only that, they think that I actually KNOW the answer to that. Huh? Why does she fix her bangs when she’s crying? Exactly how the hell am I supposed to know something like that?
