Hi Steve! Love your site.. long time reader.. first time writer. I am also a long time viewer of the Bachelor (ever since season 1.. thats kind of embarassing). For some reason I was thinking about how “back in the day” they did not have roses of group dates (or at least none that I can remember), and I was wondering if anything else has changed through the seasons. Specifically, has it ALWAYS been the final 4 goes to the hometowns ( i feel like one season it was final 3 hometown dates.. I could be wrong), and did they always used to go to the extravagant places? I don’t remember Trista or Aaron going all around the world? I could be totally wrong though, it was awhile ago… Thanks!
Comment: Yeah, in general, the show has become much more mainstream (with FB, Twitter, social networking, tabloids, etc) that no one is really coming on there to find their future spouse. They’re coming on to be on TV, have a free vacation, become part of the incestuous “Bachelor/ette” family so they can start banging former contestants from other seasons they might’ve liked better, etc.
In terms of the formatics of the show, there hasn’t always been 2-on-1 dates. That’s been in the last 6 or 7 seasons. Also, when it got down to the overnight dates, those used to be in three different locations, rather than all three come to the same place. Prince Lorenzo might’ve been the last “Bachelor” that the final three girls had overnights in different places, but maybe there was a season after his that they did. And when the contestants meet the lead’s family, that usually never happened in the final location. The contestants would actually go to the lead’s hometown and meet relatives. Can’t remember exactly which season it changed to where they just said, “F**k it. Let’s just bring the lead’s family to the final location to meet the final two.”
And you’re right, the traveling all over the world halfway through the season really only started with Ali’s season, then Brad, and now Ashley. I expect that to be the norm from now on though. But back in the day? They never traveled anywhere major until it was down to 3 or so.
Absolutely love your column. I think you are sarcastic, witty and you have a great sense of humor. The columns definitely make getting through the work day much easier.
My question is – are the lead and the contestants allowed to wear sunglasses on dates? I’ve noticed it before, but yesterday when JP and Ashley were frolicking and more or less humping on the beach all day they kept squinting and at some points it looked like they could barely keep their eyes open. I would assume the producers & camera crew like to see the eye contact they are making with each other, so they don’t like them to wear them, but it’s just a guess.
Comment: It’s a question that’s never crossed my mind and never would in probably a million years. But of course, it gets asked to me. I have no idea.
Love your blog, makes watching the show so much more fun!
Here are my questions:
You will often mention things that have happened in past seasons that make me wonder how you keep all of it straight. I know it would be easy to remember the major things, but you seem to even remember minute details going back many seasons. Do you have some sort of spreadsheet or filing system to keep track of all things bachelor/bachelorette that you can refer to? Or is it just all stored in your head?
Also, you sometimes refer to current bachelor-related tabloid stories, interviews, blogs, etc. Do you always try to find any bachelor-related info you can out there, and if so, do you enjoy it? Or do you find it just tedious research necessary to keep you up to date for your site?
Comment: Some things from past seasons I can remember really well, and some things (even some easy basic stuff), I completely forget. I watch every episode once then delete it from my TV and start writing. I could probably tell you who made the final 2 and who won in all 22 seasons off the top of my head. Final 4? Ehhh, probably not. Especially when we go back to the earlier seasons. But I mean there are things about Jason and Molly’s season (which aired from Jan-March of 09′) that I will have completely forgotten about now. Hell, there’s probably stuff about Brad’s season I’ve forgotten. However, I’d definitely remember more about Brad’s season than say Charlie O’Connell’s. I’d put my timeline at about 2 years where I start to forget a lot about what happened in particular seasons.
It’s become a job. To keep doing what I’m doing, I’m pretty much forced to keep up with a lot of gossip that I don’t necessarily care about. These people’s lives aren’t particularly interesting to me, but, it’s become a means to an end at this point. The less I need to do on my own, the better. That’s why I thoroughly enjoy when stuff is dropped into my lap. And that happens a lot.
Hi Steve! I love your spoliers. I read your talked abt Ali and Roberto at ATFR that you think Ali and Roberto won’t be at last and moved in live together already.. Well look at them successful with love for pass one year annivesary. What’s your thought on them now from your view as wrong abt them won’t be at last, that’s what you thought??
Comment: WWWHHHHHHAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTT? Is this person from Anguilla?
