Back with another live video blog tonight at 9PM EST/6PM PST. Since not much going on in “Bachelor” land, feel free to ask anything you want. Well, except if it has to do with Bachelor Pad spoilers. Or Erica. Other than that, I’ll answer just about anything within reason. We can talk 90210 if you want and debate who was Brandon’s best girlfriend he ever had. We can also debate which era of 90210 was best – high school, college, or post college. I’ve given plenty of thought to that over the years. So I’ll open it up tonight to pretty much anything you want to talk about.
Let’s get straight into “Reader Emails” and “Dr. Reality Steve” this week. Not nearly as many to get to, but some decent ones nonetheless. Some of you have sent in your requests for people you think I should interview for the site. Some have been good, and some have been people I’ve never even heard of because it’s a show I don’t watch. I’ll see what I can do and I’m working on a couple things as we speak. I kinda don’t even want to just relegate it to reality TV people. I’d like to expand and just talk to TV people in general. Whether it’s actors, actresses or media types, I definitely think I can expand into the world of scripted television, since most of the shows I watch are scripted shows. On to the emails…
I’m not sure what exactly possessed me to watch this new “Toddlers & Tiaras” spin-off, but I did. “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” has to be the worst train wreck of a show I have ever seen and, in true train wreck fashion, I just couldn’t look away. It reminds me of “Bachelor Pad” in the respect that people will get on national television and make a complete ass of themselves. Do people have no self-respect? Do they forget that friends and family are going to be watching? I know I should stop being shocked at how low people will go to gain a little notoriety but SERIOUSLY?? At least whenever I feel a little bit down that my life isn’t always going as planned, I can turn on “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” and say, “Well, at least I’m not bobbing for raw pig’s feet at the Redneck Olympics” (this actually happened).
That being said, if your life had a theme song, what would it be?
Comment: Easiest question I’ve ever answered. “Ice Ice Baby.”
In terms of “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” the clips I see on the “The Soup” every week are all I need to watch to know I have no interest in garbage like that.
Sorry about the trouble Erica Rose has caused you, never liked her on the Bachelor Pad, found her way too annoying and stupid. Don’t let that attention seeking woman keep you down. Hope you can spoil the ending to silence the haters and doubters.
Here’s my question/comment about the show.
Is it me or is David not fit for Bachelor Pad because he seems to be incapable of lying? First episode, when Erica Rose asks him who he’s voting off, he tells her that he’s voting her off. Last episode on the date he tells Blakeley that he can’t give her the rose before officially giving Jamie the rose. Seems like every rose ceremony he’s incredibly honest with who he’s voting off. And then there are guys like Kalon and Reid, lying to everyone about who they’re voting (Kalon seems to be especially good at this). Why is David so honest when lying is almost a requirement for the show?
Comment: I guess because he’s a “fan,” and since the fans are such commoners and beneath the other “celebrities” on this show, he just doesn’t fit in. I wish ABC would just admit the “fan” aspect they added this season was an unmitigated disaster. It added nothing, they really didn’t have an impact on the show, and if it weren’t for David winning the first two challenges, ALL of them would’ve been gone before episode 3. But of course, ABC will never admit it wasn’t a good idea. They probably should though considering this season’s rating have been terrible. Two weeks they went up against the Olympics and two weeks they didn’t. Bottom line is every episode this season is basically bringing in 2 million less viewers than any episode last season. Not good.
I didn’t catch your first hint that Casey S. was dating Elan, so thanks for making it obvious for me. Will you give a refresher on her story? Didn’t she leave Ben’s season for a boyfriend back home. Did they get back together before she started dating this producer?
You don’t throw people under the bus unless they deserve it. I respect that you don’t name names even when a lot of these losers deserve it. You’ve said many of the past leads and contestants get delusional and bit by the Hollywood bug, changing them. But who from the franchise do you know (or know of) that haven’t let pseudo-fame go to their head?
Comment: Well, the storyline was she had a boyfriend back home in Chicago. But after she got off the show, she pretty much moved to LA shortly thereafter and her and Elan had been seeing each other since around April or so. Don’t know what their status is now or how serious it is, but they definitely were together.
There’s still quite a few who haven’t been consumed with the Hollywood bug, but remember, I think there are varying degrees of it. Just because someone doesn’t move to LA or doesn’t want a TV career, doesn’t mean they aren’t consumed by this show. There’s plenty that love the attention from it and thrive off of it, but have nothing to do with LA.
Hi Steve –
Just watched an episode of The Bachelor Pad. Shocking that people in their late 20’s, early 30’s are behaving this way! Do you think any of them would actually be hired as an employee after getting wasted on camera? I guess they will just have to make money by continuing to go on The Bachelor Pad or in the reality TV circuit. Anyway, my actually question is this: In all the seasons of The Bachelor/Bachelorette has ANYONE who is competing ever said “you know what? I’m just really not into this guy/girl so I’m going to leave the show.” How are they ALL attracted to the lead??! Really?!!? Are their standards really that low or are they so boring that they are compatible with anyone? What are your thoughts? Thanks
Comment: They aren’t all attracted to the lead. It’s a TV show. Some people leave early (Madison the Fang girl, Britni on Ben’s season, Frank, etc), but it’s all built into the storyline that the producers create for them. They will never let someone at a rose ceremony disrespect the lead and say, “Nah, I don’t want a rose. I’m leaving,” even though producers talking to them behind the scenes already have an idea the person doesn’t want to be there anymore. Of course not all 25 people cast are there to be attracted to the lead. That’s impossible. It’s the producers job to make them think that they are. And if it’s not working out, then they either basically don’t get a rose, or, are given a storyline in how they’re going to exit the show.
I was reading Chris Harrison’s blog and I when I saw the following I had to roll my eyes: “Chris and Sarah really did take it upon themselves to check into that hotel for a makeshift overnight date, seemingly changing the rules of Bachelor Pad. I guess when you’re Chris, you just do whatever you want.”
I feel like on the last two seasons they gave couples the choice to stay over on their 1 on 1 dates. Erica Rose tried to convince Blake that they should stay over on their date, Natalie and Dave stayed in Vegas… those are the two that stick out. I know you don’t need more examples of how the show manipulates what we see… but this one was too blatant to pass up.
You are the only reason why I am still interested in this franchise at all. Thank you for giving us hilarious commentary every week!
Comment: Yeah, the 1-on-1 dates in the first two seasons always did seem to have an option of making it an overnight date. I don’t know what the silliness was surrounding Chris and Sarah’s. That was just dumb. Of course they were going to stay together.
I’ve been a reader ever since Ashley’s season and look forward to reading your recaps every Tuesday! You said there weren’t that many questions so I thought I would ask you one. How do the producers cast Bachelor Pad? Do they just look for people/stories that will cause drama that they can film? I remember watching the first episode and when they introduced Sarah I thought to myself this girl was on the show five years ago – aren’t there more memorable and recent contestants they could have chosen? Thanks!
Comment: They cast based on availability and storylines. Yeah, Sarah was a no-name that 99% of fans don’t remember, but, she’s been a mainstay at a lot of the reunions, and they’re aware she’s hooked up with people, so she was a perfect fit for this show. Ryan Hoag? No idea what the point was of casting him other than to make sure on a weekly basis everyone knew he was a 32 year old virgin who didn’t drink, which is the complete opposite of what they’re looking for on this show.
Based on the casting for the first three seasons (and if there’s a 4th season), you can expect a majority of the cast to be from the two most recent seasons (the “Bachelor” season that airs from Jan-Mar, and the “Bachelorette” season that airs May-July/Aug). That’s where 8 of the 21 people came from this season. Also, you can expect them to re-cast a person or two from a previous “Bachelor Pad” season. Then to round it out, a bunch of people from older seasons that might be memorable to the public, or, that will make good TV because they’ll drink and slut it up. There’s your cast.
Why are the producers hiding some of the Bachelor Pad hook-ups from viewers? I know Ashley Spivey’s blog mentioned that the argument between the twins was brought on because one of them slept with Tony. (And you’ve mentioned that David was/is hooking up with one of the twins, not sure if this started during filiming.) This show is all about who is getting with who, so why hide it? Not sure if you’ll be able to answer this question, but if you can share, I’d love to know!
Comment: Not sure. Chris Harrison did address in his blog this week that Kalon and Lindzi haven’t been shown much just because they haven’t been controversial. Their relationship has just kinda been there, but nothing dramatic about it. Not sure why others haven’t been shown at all. Still four episodes left, so I’m sure we’ll start seeing more.
