Lets get to some “Bachelor” news briefly:
-So Courtney decided to come out yesterday and tell the world that she’s dating Arie. Great. Seems very genuine and neither of them are hamming it up for the cameras at all. Like anyone expects these two to last. Two people who are yesterday’s news trying to keep their names out there. Ahhhh, true love.
-Emily goes dancing in Charlotte, someone snaps a picture, and the next thing you know, she’s dating some NASCAR driver. Oh well. She’s already denied it publicly three times, so much else to contribute there.
-Twice in the past couple weeks, we’ve heard tabloid stories of both Courtney and Arie saying they’ll be releasing some sort of “Tell All” book about their time on the show. Complete garbage. Arie already told WetPaint yesterday that the story was completely untrue, and Courtney she probably do the same. The reason the story is untrue is because none of them are allowed to even write such a book. If they could, one would’ve been written by one of the 600 previous contestants before them. It’s never going to happen. Sure, Melissa Rycroft wrote a book about her uninteresting life, and in that book I was told she briefly went over the “Bachelor” break up, but it certainly wasn’t some expose on the show. You can address it, but for someone to ever think they can write a book or profit off telling what happened during their whole time filming the show is nonsense. It will never happen, yet every season, some tabloid runs a story about how someone is about to write a “Tell All” book about their time on the show. Lazy journalism.
Two weeks of “Reader Emails” so there are probably some old, outdated ones in here. Next week we’ll be all caught up and I’ll have both “Reader Emails” and “Dr. Reality Steve” returning. Might even throw some “Dr. Reality Steve” emails in Tuesday’s column since I’ve got about 10 right now.
I’m glad you are just as excited about the X-Factor as I am! I wanted to know more about your thoughts on Britney as a judge. Yes, she brings in viewers with her star power alone, but something about her just seems off. The other three judges seem so passionate about the performers and the whole process, while Britney is rather detached. I grew up listening to her and respect all that she’s achieved, but she displays NO passion. I wonder if she’s just always that way. What do you think?
Also, one pet peeve I have is that people on shows like the X-Factor and the Voice seem to compete for who has the most tragic story. It’s one thing to have sad stuff in the past, but having a sad story is not what gives someone the “x-factor.” Take Paige Thomas for example. I don’t understand what she has done to make everyone think she is such a star. All I know about Paige is that she’s a young, single mom who cries a lot. And I agree, I think Carly Rose is by far the best. And yet Britney says something like “I’m not sure if you have the whole package” just because Carly has a stable family and is too young to have majorly f**ked up something in her life yet?? Come ON!! When she’s a star she’ll have plenty of time to make horrible choices. (I’m kidding. I hope she doesn’t because she seems really sweet.)
Comment: Britney is a terrible judge, adds nothing in the form of criticism, has a one word vocabulary (“amazing”), and is there for her name value only. She’s a zero on that show. L.A., Demi, and Simon offer way more critique and criticism than her. Huge disappointment and I’d be shocked if she came back next year. Not only would I not even offer her the position back if I were the show, if I were her, I wouldn’t even want to come back. She looks so uncomfortable up there. Outside of the paycheck, why would she even want to come back?
Well, it’s reality TV. And in competitions like these, backstories really help you in voting. With that said, Carly Rose is by far the best singer on that show and even though she doesn’t have a tragic backstory, I still think she’s going to win. Way too good.
I was just wondering if you still had somebody covering The Real World or the Challenge. I know you did a while back, but I hadn’t seen anything recently.
Comment: No. Been a couple seasons since we had that. Our writer was really good and he was a RW/RR Challenge savant when it comes down to it. But not enough people watch that show anymore to justify having him continue to write. It was an executive decision I made, and honestly, you are the second person in two years who asked what happened to that column. Needless to say, it just wasn’t a big enough to show to continue to have him recap.
This is the first time I’m emailing you, and its strangely not about anything bachelor/ette related, even though the main reason I come to your site everyday is to read about news regarding the bachelor/ette. Anyways, I read your column yesterday and loved your take on other reality shows! I value your opinion, I don’t always agree with it, but everyone is entitled to their opinion and I think yours is worth hearing. I am a huge fan of most reality shows, especially dancing with the stars and x factor right now. I think that Shawn will win, with the final 3 being her, Gilles and either Sabrina or Kelly. On a side note, I LOVE apollo, but I don’t like him with Karina. I also think that the final 3 for x factor are going to be Carly Rose, David Corey, and either Diamond or emblem3 if they kill it every week.
Moving on to other shows, I just about jumped out of my chair when you mentioned Smallville. I am a huge fan and I’m still sad its not on anymore. But when I saw the CW had not 1 but 2 new similar shows, I knew I had to tune in, that being Beauty and the Beast and Arrow. I thought the same thing as you, why didn’t they use the same actor from Smallville to play Oliver Queen? I absolutely loved him and he became one of my favorite characters because of what Justin Hartley brought to it. But I know he’s on another show now so that’s probably why. I also had planned to watch Beauty and the Beast, mostly because of Kristen Kruek and its Smallville-esque nature. I haven’t watched either yet because I’ve been busy watching the already established shows that I’m obsessed with, like Revenge, Modern Family (absolutely the funniest show on TV!), Once Upon a Time, Grey’s Anatomy, Glee, The Vampire Diaries, 90210, and Gossip Girl. What are your thoughts on some other shows you didn’t mention already?
Anyways, please keep writing your reality roundups because I thoroughly enjoyed it!!
Comment: “Reality Roundup” will definitely be back next week where I will hit on as much of this as I can. I’ve got every episode of “Arrow” DVR’d but I fell behind last week when I was back in CA and have yet to watch one. Behind still on other shows too. But I’ll get to them eventually.
I see you get irritated having to repeat yourself every so often. How about you setup an FAQ (frequently asked questions) on your site and you just refer people to that everytime?
Just a thought
Comment: A FAQ page? Wow. Never had that suggestion before. Like, ever. Well, except for the previous 10 times people mentioned it. Short answer: Not happening. Been addressed numerous times before.
I hope this phrase still resonates with you because I’m sure EVERYONE and their mom starts this email with this, but there’s definitely truth to it and I know people mean it. So anyway.. here it goes:
I love your blog! However you do what you do is pure genius. I love that you give us insight as to how shows are actually filmed. It seems like you have a really good idea as to what actually goes on when a show is being filmed. I bet your blog will land you a sweet gig eventually. Would you ever consider being a host of an entertainment show? I could totally see you on Entertainment Tonight giving your “Reality Round Up” segment.
Anyhew…. I’m not sure if you know this or not (and how could you… you weren’t a 10 year old girl passing notes in elementary school or putting up away messages on AIM in your teenage years) but LYLAS stands for Love You Like A Sister. It was one of those sayings that got thrown around a lot in the early 2000’s. LYLAS or LYLAB (when you want to tell the geek who’s crushing on you that hes a great guy but you love him like a brother! ha). Please forgive me if you DID know this.. I don’t mean to insult you.. I know you can use Google. I just thought by the way you punctuated “Lyla’s” I thought maybe you didn’t know.
Have fun in Cali! It sounds like you’re a really good uncle. That’s cool of you to visit them so often.
Comment: Now that you mention what LYLAS meant, yeah, I do remember that phrase. But only because you reminded me of it. 143256839593903 or whatever they called themselves last week might’ve been the stupidest group name I’ve ever heard. Especially when there’s already a Lyric 145 on the show. Fifth Harmony? Eh. Whatever. Not terrible, but not great. I don’t think they have a chance in hell of winning, but I think two girls in that group have a chance at solo careers when this is over. Can’t remember their names.
Whats up? I notice nobody asks how are you, so I will ask…how are you?
Onto my question:
Dr.Travis Stork seems to be the only one that has done very well after his stint as the Bachelor. Do you think that he goes to reunions? I wouldn’t think so, but just checking. How did he get that sweet job when on his resume it says, oh after my Medical degree, I was the Bachelor. Just doesn’t sound good.
Also, you want a sweet show, watch Sons of Anarchy. Best. Show. Ever. Great acting and the storylines are always exciting. You should check it out if you haven’t already. Have a good day!
Comment: I’m great, thanks. Although it’s been quite the interesting and exhausting week.
Dr. Travis Stork? That guy didn’t even go to his own “After The Final Rose” show. They never even had one that season. He’s certainly not attending any of these group orgies…errrrr…reunions. Not to mention he just recently got married.
I’ve already got enough shows on my plate in any given week. Don’t have time to start a new one.
I read your Bachelor Spoilers, but love when you throw in the old school 90210 info. One of my favorite shows of all time, though in my opinion should have ended with Brandon and Kelly’s wedding… lost a lot after that, even with bringing Dylan back and marrying Donna and David.
So top five episodes? Outside of the obvious choices like Spring Fling, Prom/Donna Martin Graduates, all of the the Beach Club eps, at the etc. Just curious!
Here’s a few of mine:
1. The episode in college where they all roll-played the reality TV show- can I tell you how many times in college I tried to soak a watermelon in vodka because of this???
2. The episode where Dylan’s dad dies and he talks to his other self the whole time, maybe it’s because I REALLY liked the song “Can’t cry hard enough” at the time and because I was a Dyan and Brenda fan and he was really mad at Kelly this whole episode
3. The episode where Brandon and Kelly got back together at the end, when she shows him she bought back “their ring.” I was slightly obsessed w/ this episode in college as a hopeless romantic.
One last random 90210- did you ever notice that they were juniors for 2 years in a row? They started as juniors first season with Brenda and Dylan getting together, Spring Fling, etc, had the first summer episodes where Brenda had her pregnancy scare, but they got back together, had another junior year (Scott shoots himself, David come into the group more, Emily Valentine drama, then another summer (where Brenda went to France) and then their senior year- ALWAYS bugged me…wondered if I’m the only one.
Comment: Kinda impossible to narrow it down to 5. Especially just in terms of episodes. Can we just do storylines? In no particular order:
1) Dylan and Antonia Marchette with her dad being Dylan’s fathers killer and that all coming to a head when he killed his own daughter thinking it was Dylan (great storyline to send Dylan on his way. Too bad they brought him back for a ratings grab later on when his career didn’t take off like he thought it would).
2) The creepo TV station intern senior year of college that held the station hostage because he wanted Donna to like him, even though she was a virgin and didn’t put out so, uhhhhhh, Evan, I hope that was all worth it.
3) Professor Finley and the New Evolution. Enough said.
4) Ray Pruit and Donna Martin.
5) Tara the crazy stalker lunatic from rehab that tried to kill Kelly after getting her haircut just like her. Cuck-koo, Cuck-koo.
Notice how none of my favorite storylines happened before sophomore year of high college? That because to me, this show was 100 times better in college than high school. Look, you’re talking to someone that just went through all nine seasons from beginning to end over the summer. I’ve dissected this show every which way possible. College years blows the high school years out of the water and it’s not even close. Don’t even bother arguing that with me. Anyone who dares try to say that Brenda was better looking or had better storylines than Valerie Malone is smoking crack. Valerie completely changed the face of that show. Good riddance Brenda, you wet mop. God I couldn’t stand her.
I love reading your column – it makes watching shows like the bachelorette/bachelor so more entertaining!
My question is, previously when you said that the bachelor would be Roberto – was that only because he had recently split with Ali? Seemed kind of random because I never thought of him much as a fan favourite… I actually completely forgot about him. I assumed they picked Sean over him because he had more of a fan base?
Do you think Jef would ever be considered for the bachelor? It kind of seemed like Emily was the golden girl to be picked for the show, the one girl that all of America wanted to see find love and whom no dude would be opposed to finding love with, do you think that Jef will be that now for the franchise now? (but the male version) Correct me if I’m wrong but has any couple gotten as much hype as these two have? Girls seem to be crazy about him and I do think it would make an interesting season
Comment: Because they were hard after Roberto in June and offered him a contract, that’s why I reported it. What happened afterwards I was never able to find out. Guess it doesn’t matter now since it’s not him.
Jef won’t be the Bachelor. I don’t see them ever asking him and I don’t see him ever wanting to do it. He’s too busy combing the local colleges for early 20’s chicks to bang. And if you think that story isn’t true or just rumor, you’ve got another thing coming.
So apparently the Jef/Emily thing isn’t going away. I’m seeing a lot of stupid rumors that they’re reuniting and I can only imagine the emails you’re getting. Is this relationship (not that anyone should still be calling it that) becoming your own personal bad penny?
Comment: These two are so far done, it’s not even funny. I don’t pay any attention to any story that says they’re reuniting or whatever. They were done the second I told everyone they were done back 3 weeks ago and nothing was going to change that. Only the Jemily crazies were holding out hope every single day that I was wrong or they’d reconcile, but that’s because they live in fantasy land. They didn’t have a clue what was really going on.
First of all thank you for all you post….makes reality tv actually help you stay in reality and that it’s not real. With that being said:
1. Do you think DWTS results are rigged? I mean seriously, kirsty has the overall lowest score of the season and sabrina is #2 and she happens to go home the same week as she did last time…
2. Do you think they should keep doing DWTS All Stars (every other season) or maybe a DWTS Redemtion show? ie those that made it halfway but not all the way
3. Do you think they’d ever do a Bachelor/ette “All Star”…ie bring back eliminated girls/guys…basically i guess bachelor pad but without challenges or w/e they do on that show
4. Do you think THE VOICE could work if they only did 12 persons for the live show?
5. What is ur fav show of all time…im talking guilty pleasure back in the day…7th heaven maybe??
6. Old school nickelodeon show? I’ve got to go with are you afraid of the dark
Comment: 1) No. The scoring system is just so stupid on this show that basically anyone can go home every week, no matter what their scores are. Ever tried reading how they calculate the scores? It’s like learning Calculus.
2) No. Especially considering this season is the worst rated season in the history of the franchise. I doubt they do another All-Star season again. It still wins it’s timeslot every week, but it’s never performed this poorly in terms of overall viewership.
3) Where the whole cast of 25 men or women are returnees from previous seasons? No. I mean, Sean’s season is the first season that they ever started out with a returning player showing up the first night (Kacie B). Maybe they’ll do that more often now, but I don’t see them doing it with the whole cast.
4) I guess The Voice is now down to 12 people for the live show as I was informed after my column two weeks ago. I wouldn’t know. I quit watching after the spinning chair rounds.
5) Favorite TV show of all time? 24. Guiltiest pleasure TV show of all time that I’m ridiculously embarrassed to admit to? Dawson’s Creek. Saw every single episode (Btw, I’ve just started watching “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt 23” for the sole reason James Van Der Beek is in it playing himself, and they reference Dawson’s Creek constantly. I’m getting a kick out of it).
6) That’s easy. “You Can’t Do That on Television.”
So I was not a fan of how Michael behaved on Bachelor Pad this summer and wanted to give Holly and Blake the benefit of the doubt (considering they’re one of the 3 or so couples from the franchise to actually make it). I can officially say now that Michael is the better man.
Blake recently posted on Twitter “there’s finally a real situation on the Jersey Shore #sandyaftermath #toosoon?”
So yeah, I finally believe you. It wasn’t editing, the guy’s a d**k and if Holly loves him so much I doubt she’s any better. Even more curious as to what you have on her.
Comment: He wrote that? Wow. Without going over to his Twitter account, my guess is he’s since deleted it, just like he used to delete his insensitive and degrading tweets while “Bachelor Pad 2” was airing once people started being mean to me. If he hasn’t taken that tweet down, well, then that’s pretty embarrassing for him, I’d say. Was it supposed to be a joke? It wasn’t even funny.
Add me to the long list of people who are thankful for the introduction to Friday Night Lights. I’m hoping to return the favor by suggesting you watch Breaking Bad if you haven’t done so already. I was skeptical at first but it is definitely worth watching.
Whenever I read your “Ask Reality Steve” columns, people will ask you if you’ve heard certain things, like whether Chris Harrison is dating Bieber’s mom or whether you know Courtney and Arie went on a second date. It makes me think that you keep up on the random things being said in the media about The Bachelor. What does your research entail? I’m assuming you read certain sites on a daily/weekly basis. How many sites do you keep up with and how often?
Thanks in advance for the answer to my completely useless question.
Comment: I read gossip/TV/and pop culture news sites all day, every day pretty much. There’s probably a rotation of 6 or 7 that I’m on every day periodically checking.
