You know what’s funny, but not the least bit surprising? I actually got more negative reaction on Twitter than I did sent to me in emails. It was all coming so fast and furious on Monday night, I guess I was lumping them in together when I said it was running 80/20 in favor of “Who cares if you got the ending wrong.” Of course people are much more bold over Twitter than email. That’s a given. Sure, there are some brutal emails this week, but Twitter had the most negative attacks. I made sure in this week’s “Reader Emails” to include every negative email sent to me since Monday night. I don’t think I missed any because I was sure to save all of them. Definitely some harsh ones, but it’s just words. If I can generate that much response out of people then I guess I’m doing something right.
Usually I print every “Reader Email” I get from Thursday morning through Wednesday night. Today’s is a little bit different since all anyone basically wants to see is what people said after Monday night aired, so all these emails came in after 9:00pm CST Monday night up through this morning. Also, I received exactly 356 emails since Monday night and there was no way I was printing all of them. All the negative ones are in here, but as for the others, they were randomly chosen based on, well, no criteria whatsoever. Plenty of you just emailed to say nice things, don’t worry about the wrong spoiler and that you’ll continue to read. Basically over 100 of them sounded exactly the same, so I didn’t need to print every single one of them. But know that I saw them and I appreciate the support.
Did you see the post show interview Chris Harrison gave during his weekly visit with TVGuide.com? This answer is pretty telling I’d say:
Looking back, how would you rate the season?
Harrison: It was an OK season. It wasn’t great, and I put that on us. I don’t think we performed our best. All I can take my cue from is the ratings, and the ratings weren’t great. To put it in sports terms, it’s not a good game, but you score a couple of runs in the bottom of the ninth. It’s not one of those wins you celebrate, you just go straight to the bus and go home. But we’ve been doing this for 11 years and you’re not going to be spectacular every time. The fact is, you can have an off season, but the ending was phenomenal, so we ended in a high note. Again, you don’t always have you’re A-game, but it doesn’t mean you lose and it doesn’t mean you’re done. We’re far from being irrelevant.
Wait, weren’t they promoting Des all season as the best “Bachelorette” they’ve ever had. This is hilarious. So basically moving forward, anything these producers feed you on Twitter before and during the season is complete horsesh**. Juan Pablo will get the same treatment once they start promoting his season, hyping it as the best season yet, and ultimately it won’t be. Way to backpedal, Harrison. Geez. Throw Des under the bus why don’t ya? Now, on to your “Reader Emails.” Enjoy…
Dear Reality Steve,
To continue my tradition at the end of each season I wanted to send you a thank you note. I am sure you are getting bombarded with hate mail but I still wanted to say congratulations. You had this season mostly right and that counts to me. You still gave good and accurate spoilers (ending aside). So thank you. You will always have a reader and fan in me. And all the assholes yelling at you via twitter or email will continue to read too.
And Juan Pablo????? Are you kidding me? Its going to be a long season!!! Thank god I’ll have your blog to keep me watching. Lol
All the best!
Comment: Thanks. I printed this email because I believe it was the first one that came in after the show ended.
I feel you indeed affected the season. You know that choosing Juan Pablo was the one-finger salute to you haha, even though it also happens to be the bet pick for the show. Also I bet they had someone mislead you as regards Brooks. And then actually built it up (the possibility of a return) based on you when perhaps they otherwise wouldn’t and in retrospect it was pretty inconceivable based on what he said (even though we know about the Jason-Molly storyline).
Hey, they got you. Go spoil it completely next season and get em back. Keep up the good work. I enjoy watching the show, and I also enjoy reading your spoilers. You also got a lot accurate as well this season up until this disastrous week, but of course all that really matters is the end and also the bachelor pick.
In my opinion, do what you are doing in terms of not making any excuses. Take the criticism, definitely defend your record, etc. But don’t make an excuse for being wrong. As for that, be humbled by it, and move on. LATER!
Comment: I still don’t think the casting of Juan Pablo had anything to do with me.
Do I think some of the show was edited because they knew the wrong spoiler was out there? Of course. However, what if I would’ve found out two weeks ago or a week ago, or whenever for that matter, that it WAS Chris in the end and the spoiler was changed? They’d already made their schedule of this season so they had to have known there was a possibility in the last 3 months that the correct ending might have gotten to me, so then all their changing up wouldn’t have meant anything, right? Hell, it DID come to me when that Twitter conversation a fan had with Nate was passed on to me about 3 weeks ago. I just didn’t put enough stock into it because it was really the only place the “Des is with Chris” was coming from.
I fully plan on spoiling next season, and every season this show is on the air. As long as they put out seasons, I will spoil them. It’s become what I do, along with making fun of all the ridiculousness. The recap was around looooong before my spoilers will, so that’s not going anywhere either.
Absolutely will not make any excuses for what happened this season. I think that was pretty evident in Tuesday’s column. Got bad info this season. It happens, and now I move on Juan Pablo’s. Simple as that.
Long time reader of your blog – a few thoughts and questions from Monday’s finale.
1) Have you noticed how the relationship that Des has with her parents and brother seems so estranged. She said what her family thinks is so important to her yet they don’t seem to have that close connection you would think she would have. She has mentioned repeatedly that she left home at 18 years old and how hard her life has been. Then she admitted that she had not spoken to her brother since the Sean conversation but yet still says she cares about what her brother thinks and says. Do you have any insight on this.
2) What was that conversation about between Drew and Des on the beach where he says “I just don’t think this will work” (from the promos) They never showed it on air in the finale.
3) Did her family not know that she had already let Drew go since they obviously didn’t meet Drew. I thought for sure her brother would be more than happy to blab that tidbit to Chris. But instead he asked Chris how he would feel if Des picked Drew. What happened there.
4) During the live finale, Chris Harrison says, “what will Chris think when he finds out how Des really felt about Brooks?” I loved the way Chris Harrison, Chris purposely did not answer that question. There was one contestant and even Sean and Catherine stated the obvious and said they would send Des packing.
Definitely don’t see this relationship lasting, PURE HUMILIATION is all I can say.
5) Sorry your info fell through this season and your prediction of the next Bachelor was off too…I actually like the choice of Juan Pablo over Drew. I wish Juan Pablo didn’t take this though, he and his daughter deserve better than some of the trashy fake girls they cast on this show.
I love reading your blog – keep up the good work and delete all the hate emails.
Comment: 1) No insight on her family relationship other than I agree that it seems very estranged. The admittance after Sean’s season that she talked to Nate once in the last year, then barely talking to him from the end of that season to the beginning of this one, along with her mom not getting any ITM time when Chris met the family, etc. Definitely is a bit suspect. They don’t live anywhere near her, she’s now bolting for Seattle which makes her even farther away, Nate’s down in San Antonio, yeah, I’d say she’s kinda off doing her own thing.
2) One of many things they tease and never show. I’m guessing it was about them not working out if she doesn’t feel it.
3) The whole last episode couldn’t have been any more bizarre if they tried. Impossible to try and explain it away since I didn’t understand it, nor did I see it coming.
4) Hey, Des and Chris have already started in with their incessant tweeting about where they are, the selfies, the “I’d marry him right now” statements and how much they’re in love. Every couple ever on this show has done it. Three have made it. Time will tell.
5) The single dad thing will most certainly be interesting since we’ve only seen it once with Jason. Because as I said at the beginning of that season, it’s not like they’re going to cast 25 women who are hell bent on being with a guy who already has a kid and a hot ex-girlfriend whose the mother of his child. So lets set the over/under on how many girls utter the, “I don’t know if I’m ready to be part of someone else’s family yet” line at 5.
Hey Steve…people need to relax and remember it is only a tv show…if u got 99% on an exam everyone would be cheering for u. so congrats on the 99%…great job Steve!! Can’t wait for more spoilers in the future
Comment: That’s the way I’ll look at it from now on. I’ll continue to give myself an “A.” And a scratch-n-sniff sticker. Watermelon.
I am sure you are getting a lot of sh8t right now so I just wanted to send you this email to let you know that I think you are so cool!!!! I’d like to know what Jimmy Kimmel and everyone else who runs with your spoilers but never gives you any credit has to say now!!
You singlehandedly shaped the show’s edit this season because I am sure if it was not for your Brooks spoiler the story would not have gotten the edit it did. Once they found out you were wrong they really ran with it so kudos to you. You have so much power, its amazing!
Oh man Desiree is smarter than she let on, Chris is probably a better fit for a fiancee than Brooks.
Also, thank you for adding the only excitement to this boring season. If you had correctly predicted Chris was the final one, it would have been an even bigger snoozefest. WHATTHEF**KNOWJUANPABLOISTHENEWBACHELOR?? What is going on today.
Comment: Pure speculation at this point, but as I mentioned earlier, what if I changed the spoiler at some point if I had found out it was Chris? Would the edit still have stayed the same? Will Chris Harrison still have asked the audience 700 times during the live show, “Hey, who here thinks Brooks is coming back?” I think that was the one obvious take from the live show that was a direct shot at the spoilers. The constant mentioning of Brooks, continuing to ask the audience if they thought he’d come back, and then to even have people in the audience convinced he was coming back. Well played by them. Looking back on it now, they definitely played it up knowing it’d be a surprise to everyone there when it didn’t happen.
I’m a high school teacher by day, reality fan junkie by (most) DVRed weeknights. Although I used to be a rose ceremony devotee -I even kept a light-hearted blog during Ashley’s season- the show quickly lost its luster as it became more and more trite, while Chris Harrison’s polka-dotted tie wardrobe became more and more eclectic. I couldn’t stand watching one more person lean against a balcony as their scripted voice over somberly read off the same “Journey/fairytale/insert cliché” lines. However, a friend of mine referenced your blog and after casually clicking on it, I was hooked. Your wry writing is hilarious and spot-on, and as a 30 year old, I appreciate the 90’s show shout-outs!
Anyways, on a night that I’m guessing brings a barrage of attacks from the cat-lady crazies, who believe the show is actual sincere, this is just a quick note that your blog is the BEST reason to still watch an otherwise tired format. The people that are ferociously tweeting you need to get their own reality check; please keep up the commentary and pay no attention to those who enjoy tearing others down.
Have a great week,
Comment: Thanks. I like the “cat lady crazies” line the best, so that’s enough to make your email get posted today.
I hate you
Comment: I love you too.
You’re “credbility” is F**kin’ gone…
Thanks for nothing…ONLY to think that Brooks was gonna come back. You f**king sell 0ut.
Comment: I think you lost credibility in the second word of your first sentence when you couldn’t spell credibility. And you used the number zero to spell “out.” You are a bright one.
So… best part of tonight’s episode, frankly, was Chris Harrison trying to make the night even more dramatic by telling the audience that the bachelorette has never left without choosing someone. That is a complete lie. Jennifer Schefft left without choosing someone.
Most. Dramatic. Mistake. Ever.
Comment: Technically Jen did choose Jerry during their final episode, but that season also had a live finale where she didn’t accept his proposal. Its since been revealed that from the time taping ended til the time the live show finale aired, Jen barely even talked to the guy and I don’t believe they even saw each other, so Jerry kinda knew what was coming.
Of course, it’s bitter sweet. Love proving the haters wrong with your spoilers but wth, this publicity is great. I watched your twitter followers go boom tonight.
Did you feel it??
I honestly felt at every turn, the show was doing whatever they could to turn the opposite direction you had guided all your fans. They are literally playing your game. And, that is all the satisfaction you’ll ever need
AND, Chris and Des won’t last long…if its even real. No man PATS his woman’s shoulder. Des was a wreck emotionally, she literally looked like she was ready to jump into Brooks arms if he would have said that he loved her.
There wasn’t a single word about wedding between the two of them
Des looked sooo painfully uncomfortable sitting next to her “fiancé”
Juan P spilled the beans when he said, “there’s so many more ppl here than last week… I mean the last couple of weeks.” It’s not live, it’s never live.
Is ABC seriously, honestly telling me, Des was in love with Brooks this entire time, and 1.5 days goes by and amazingly she figured out she could love Chris too? I feel more confident in believing they are actors.
I’ll keep following you, and clicking on the adds. It’s the least I could do.
Comment: Well Monday’s audience show was definitely live. I just think Juan Pablo screwed up what he was saying. Something I expect a lot of next season.
Des will convince you she needed Brooks to leave so she could see who she was truly in love with. Some people buy it. Most people don’t. I personally don’t see how all that went down and it makes zero sense to me, but then again, I don’t buy any of these couples.
Bump in the road. Stick with me and this site and everything will be back on track.
Comment: Booty head.
I know you’ll be getting buttloads of emails, most of which proclaiming that you suck, but I just wanted to let you know that, as a first-time reader of your blog, I’ll definitely continue to read in the future, because you’re awesome. Honestly, I don’t understand the stick up people’s asses. It’s a TV show. You get it wrong once or twice out of like twenty seasons and people go apesh*t.
Anyway, this will probably get brought up a lot, but wow. That ending. Was just. I’m shaking my head, because there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell that you can be in love with someone and then get engaged to someone else a few days later. I thought at the very least if Brooks wasn’t returning, that she would decline Chris’ proposal but continue dating him after the show. The whole finale doesn’t make sense to me. A lot more emphasis was put on Brooks’ departure than it should have. I know it was meant to mislead us or be the doom and gloom before the clouds part for Desiree or some sh*t, but all it ended up doing was souring what could have been a touching proposal.
Here’s my question, though. Kind of off-topic, and I’m sorry if you’ve been asked this before, but who would be your ideal bachelor/bachelorette from any of the previous seasons?
Comment: Pretty cool that a first time reader to the site isn’t jumping ship so soon. Thanks. Glad you’re aware of the track record.
The thing is, it’s not like I’m invested into any past character in hopes that they find the loves of their life, so I don’t really know who I’d want to see as the lead from previous seasons. Sure I have some that I’d consider friends, but I’d tell every single one of them (a few of them I have) to stay away from going on this show again. Some have listened. Some haven’t. Their call.
Blah blah blah…great blog…blah blah blah…check it 4 times a day…blah blah blah…you’re a genius…let’s cut to the chase:
I was thinking as I was watching this finale “oh man this is a tough night for Reality Steve” and then I realized we were in America where you get the most attention for being wrong or being dumb. Of course you are not dumb, but you were wrong and I’m sure your site’s traffic is through the roof! Congrats because I really do enjoy your blog and you very much enhance my Bachelor/Bachelorette viewing experience. In fact I will go on record to say that I would NOT watch this show if it wasn’t for your blog. Why ABC doesn’t recognize this or celebrate this is beyond me…
As for the finale, I actually really enjoyed it and they actually edited in a way that made sense to me. So many women fall in love with the wrong guy and there is some guy in the background who is there to pick up the pieces. I have been “that guy” who picked up the pieces of a brokenhearted woman after she was dumped by the bad boy. Now is Brooks really the “bad boy”? No not really, but he’s definitely the wrong choice. Women’s hearts are an anomaly to me because they bend and shift in so many directions in short periods of time.
Now don’t get me wrong, of course this is still a TV and they need to create the “story” to make us think that it all makes sense, but in the end I did shed a small tear when Des told Chris that Brooks blinded her from the man who was always there from the beginning. I think that was more from personal experience than anything else. Anyways, I think ABC actually did a good job in fooling all of us thinking Brooks was coming back and that there was no WAY Des would pick either Chris or Drew. Well done and congrats to you because I’m sure your traffic was through the roof…until next season…
Comment: Wow. A dude emailing me. And admitting to shedding a tear during the finale. What is this world coming to?
As for my traffic? Things are just great. It was exactly what I was expecting it to be after what happened Monday. No complaints here.
Hey – Sell Out Thanks for misleading US… Tell Fleiss I Said “Hi”. Go AWAY STEVE….I Got IT – YOU WIN>> Gee, Desiree and Brooks are together RIght:??? Hope your stupid sight makes it… Oh,yeah, it will, with the backing of Fleiss.. Hope you can sleep at night…
Comment: Wait, did I mislead “us” as in the viewers? Or “US” (capitalized) as in the “the whole United States?”
Your incessant capitalization of words that have no business being capitalized I think pretty much sums up the intelligence level I’m dealing with here.
Conspiracy theorists out in full force again. Now it’s Mike Fleiss backing the site and we were in on this together. Couldn’t be farther from the truth and utterly ridiculous. Not that that answer matters. If someone is stupid enough to believe that, their response to what I just said is, “Well of course you’re gonna deny it.” And if I don’t say anything, I’m guilty as well because I avoided it. I’ve got zero reason to lie. If there are people out there who honestly think this was a set up, I’m an ABC plant, I work for Mike Fleiss yada yada yada, they are completely delusional. They don’t know half the stuff that’s gone on behind the scenes the last 18 months or else that wouldn’t even be a thought in their head.
Steve, not only were you given wrong info about the ending, you missed the boat on Juan Pablo being the next bachelor. I’m not so sure I’d put my eggs in your source basket again!
Comment: I would.
Never written before because frankly I have nothing to offer really….just enjoy the entertainment value of your site.
Holy crap are you getting our ass handed to you tonight! And why am I enjoying it so much? It’s because I know you realize how pathetic it is that people are SO upset about a reality show and you could care less!
Will you spoil again next and probably be right? Yes.
Will all the people who say they aren’t going to ever read your site again be back next year to read your spoilers? Yes.
I admit for me it’s better when you are wrong!
Sleep well…I know you will because YOU HAVE A LIFE!!!
Comment: I’m shocked at how many people have said it was a good thing I was wrong because it added excitement to the show. Maybe it is ok to be wrong every once in a while. I sure don’t want to be and I hope I never am again, but a lot of people said it made the finale more interesting. Guess I never looked at it that way because I was pissed I was wrong.
Ha ha you were wrong!!!!’ I don’t mean to sound so Jr. High about it but you are so cocky and so sure of yourself that it’s great to knock you down a few pegs once in awhile. Maybe you’ll will stop being so cocky and rude but I doubt it. I started reading your spoilers in Emily season (she was my favorite bachelorette). Each week I read your articles and watch your videos. You eventually got really rude and totally turned me off. (and no I’m not one of those crazy Jef or Arie fans). Anyway for Sean and Des I just read the spoilers no articles or email questions because I just can’t stand your rudeness especially when I new person to your site ask you a question you feel you already answered a million times. Well it would seem to me that you always would want more readers to build up your website so why you are rude to them and don’t answer their questions I’ll never get. I will probably still check spoilers from time to time although I won’t be so sure you are right anymore, but you have definitely lost a avid reader to your posts. It’s not because you were wrong this one time but because of you cockiness and just being a jerk to your readers.
Comment: Ok, so lets recap what this person called me: cocky, sure of myself, rude (400 times) and a jerk. Yet in the same breath also stated “each week I read your articles and watch your videos.”
I don’t even understand how people could be mad at you. it’s not like they are forced to read your blog, and to believe everything you post. I’m more mad at abc because they edited a certain way, and set up a certain plot and they just didnt end with it. I come to watch a love story. I don’t care if it’s real or fake. yesterday’s episode was far from it. on a scale of 1-10 how annoyed are you. I’m about a 12.
Comment: To everyone out there who is bothered by the beating I was taking on Twitter from fans, don’t be. If the person they are directing their hatred towards doesn’t care, you certainly shouldn’t. Maybe 4 years ago when I started spoiling it would’ve bothered me, but I’ve been doing this too long and I know exactly what this job entails – plenty of criticism. Let them. If I let all criticism get to me, I certainly still wouldn’t be doing this job.
I provide a free service to people who have a choice whether or not they want to read what I write. I’ll never understand why anyone would take the time to verbalize how upset they are with me or something I said by a tweet, email, or whatever. I guess I’m just wired differently than most. I’ve never tweeted or emailed any author of anything in my life so upset by something they wrote and I guarantee I never will. There’s been plenty of horses**t articles I’ve read in my life. Even some I thought were dead wrong, factually incorrect, or just completely biased and not objective in the least bit. But never gotten riled up so much to the point to personally attack them. So ridiculous. But hey, different strokes for different folks. Obviously there are people out there that do, as evidenced by the reaction Monday night. Is what it is, and that’s why I just laugh at it.
A reminder to all those freaking out at you
1) it’s just a show
2) Des / Brooks / Chris are not actually their friends
3) they are watching a tv show
4) they need to read spoilers at all times with a filter
5) if they are going to get angry every time they are spoon fed something wrong, life is going to suck big time.
6) don’t bite the hand that feeds you
7) public lynchings are illegal
8) guarantee they will come back-they always do
I have read your blog since Deanna’s season…I will continue reading it. So this season is wrong-you will get ABC next time
Comment: Good advice. Plenty of which none of the crazies will adhere to. But hey, at least you tried.
I have a question in which I am only half seriously about.
Are you by any chance employed by ABC?? If you aren’t, you should be. They should be paying you for that wrong spoiler. Do people realize they based their entire finale around YOUR incorrect “spoiler”?
If it hadn’t been for you they would have showed the rose ceremony after Brooks left and began a new episode with the two remaining men. Everyone thought Brooks would be back to win her back and that is what brought in the viewers. Your spoiler brought the viewers.
By the way the twitter reaction was pretty outrageous. People really get that mad at you? Absurd. I thought it made the finale even better myself. Sometimes I wish I knew who didn’t win but I can’t not read your site.
So seriously, does ABC secretly pay you?
Comment: No, they don’t. I’ve built RealitySteve.com from the ground floor by myself, along with my webmaster. We are the only two involved in the day-to-day operation of the site.
