Column is a bit late today and I’ll tell you why. I was supposed to be on “Good Morning Texas” this morning, but due to horrible thunderstorms and tornado warnings, the whole show was weather related so I got bumped to next week. Well, the studio is a half hour from my house and I waited a little for the rain to clear before I left. I had to wait around until the show was over at 10:00 just in case they decided to go with my segment, but they didn’t. Then there was a little traffic on the way back. I had already written pages 2 and 3 of this column last night, so I just needed to write page 1. It just took longer than I thought it would when you see me go into a little more detail on the Caila “Bachelorette,” thing. But then again, you’re used to me being long winded, so this is nothing new. However, I didn’t start writing page 1 til 11:00am my time so now you know why it’s a tad late today. It’s always at this point of the season every year where I have to start explaining things that are coming up as well, so long time readers will probably be very familiar with stuff you’re about to read on this page. Sorry, but it’s necessary to inform the masses. Sometimes they don’t quite understand the inner workings of this show. That’s what I’m here for.
Also, I just decided to cut out what was supposed to be page 4, and that would’ve been covering Ben’s appearance on the WTA last night. Was it really that eventful? No, it wasn’t. Leah was the only one who brought anything up remotely interesting because of her throwing his fiancé under the bus, and Ben basically put her in her place, Leah informed us she and Lauren are fine, so that’s that. So apologies for not covering Ben’s time on the “hot seat,” since it wasn’t even hot. It was mildly freezing. And the bloopers weren’t all that great. The preview for the finale? Well, Ben just continues to step in it more and more by CONSTANTLY telling both women he loved them – over and over and over. Dumb move, no idea what he was thinking, but that was four months ago. It’s really hard for me to care that much since it obviously hasn’t affected his relationship moving forward.
Since Ben’s People.com blog hasn’t been posted as of this column, and Chris Harrison’s blog is worthless, figured I’d link to a couple different ones. First, Olivia spoke to People about the bullying from the show, and how she won’t do Paradise. Good. Hope she sticks to that. As for Jubilee, she spoke as well and there’s more to her family story that she never told Ben. She’s definitely had it rough. All the more reason why I’m confused she ever thought this show would be a good idea to do. They preyed on her and this show ate her alive.
And of course, Nell Kalter’s Vanderpump Rules recap is now up for your viewing. Any questions, comments for Nell you can email her directly or if you want to email me, I can forward them on to her. And lets not forget about “Reader Emails,” and “Dr. Reality Steve” this week. We’re already at six Dr. emails already, which is pretty high for a Tuesday. As I’ve said, I’m shooting for about 8-10 a week. Looks like we’re headed in that direction.
Ratings are in from last night and they were down from last week, but the “Tell All” show always is, since it’s basically a recap of the season with updated interviews. So much of what we saw last night we’d already seen. It drew 7.4 million viewers and a 2.2 rating. If you want to compare it to last season, Chris’ “Women Tell All” drew 8 million viewers and a 2.4 rating. So there. They’re not crying over a 600k drop.
Last Thursday I tweeted out pictures of Caila filming in downtown Hudson, Ohio. A few hours later after making some calls and sending some emails, I confirmed that Caila will indeed be the “Bachelorette,” to which media outlets ran with the next day. Nice try, guys. You almost had it. Anyway, I touched upon this briefly in the video chat but the anti-Caila sentiment really isn’t going to have much of an effect, if any. Would I choose Caila over JoJo for the role? No. But it’s not my choice to make. Here’s something I’ve never understood and never will: the people who announce on social media “OMG I will NOT watch if it’s Caila!” You know, using ALL CAPS and exclamation points. They really want you to know how mad they are and aren’t watching. And? Your point? Are they offering everyone who DOES watch her season $1 million and your announcement is showing how adamant you are in your dislike for her? You do realize that no one cares that you’re not watching, right? Just checking. And the more you consistently announce to everyone that you’re not watching, the more I think you will. Every minute of every episode? No. But you will pay attention, you will comment on social media, which means you’re still engaged and that’s all they care about. So like it or not, Caila will be the “Bachelorette” and you can expect that announcement to come on the ATFR next Monday night.
Since they’ve gone to their current shooting schedule where they begin filming the “Bachelorette” just days after the “Bachelor” finale airs, we’ve had 7 consecutive seasons now where the #2 girl has been passed up for the lead role. Four of those seven seasons went to the #3 girl (Ashley, Andi, Kaitlyn, and Caila), two went to the #4 girl (Ali & Des), and the other one went to Emily, which was a full year after her season aired because they decided to pass up choosing any of Ben Flajnik’s women. I’m choosing to believe that’s not coincidental probably, well, because it isn’t. And they had plenty of girls who could’ve got that role: Tenley Molzahn, Lindsay Yenter, Clare Crawley, Chantal O’Brien (if she didn’t go get a boyfriend), Becca Tilley, and now JoJo Fletcher. Really? Not ONE of them could’ve been given the role? The girls behind them were THAT much more deserving for the role? Of course not. I say it time and time again, but the schedule of shooting the “Bachelorette” just days after the “Bachelor” finale plays a huge role in why the #2 girl doesn’t get it. 7-for-7 now.
Anyone who gets cast in that role has a story from their season, so it’s not that either. They can shape and mold anyone for that lead, so it’s not like the 7 that got it had that much more of a compelling storyline. This season alone, you easily have a storyline for JoJo to get the lead and even Amanda could’ve been the “heartbroken single mom looking for love.” And running back over the previous 6, you had built in storylines for any of the top 4, hence the reason the choice is always made from there. They all have fan bases that are invested in them. Doesn’t mean any one is a better choice than any other, but producers could’ve sold a story out of any of them, that’s why it doesn’t matter who they choose. People will watch and that will be evident come the summer ratings. Let me list the last two seasons episode-by-episode ratings for you (and I’m sure I’ll bring this up again once Caila’s season starts airing)…
Season, followed by millions of viewers per episode:
Andi: 7.1, 6.0, 5.0 (Sun night), 6.75, 6.5, 6.3, 6.3, 6.8, 6.65, 6.8, 7.5, 7.9 (ATFR)
Kaitlyn: 7.2, 5.3 (Memorial Day), 6.4, 6.3 6.2, 6.6, 6.9, 6.9, 6.9, 8.0, 7.95 (ATFR)
You see a pattern here? Just looking at those numbers in my head, the average episode for both seasons was around 7 million. No matter how many people tweet/email/text me how much they hate Caila and won’t watch, I’m fairly certain her numbers will look like those. And even if they come in at an average of 6.5 million, or even 6 million, ABC is fine with that. That doesn’t mean she failed. If we’re talking about numbers in the 4-5 million viewers a week, then you can say no one cared about Caila’s season. But the same thing happens every season. Do you know how many people told me they hated how Andi treated Juan Pablo and that she was a b**ch and they wouldn’t watch? Or how many people thought Britt would get chosen over Kaitlyn and why is Kaitlyn even being cast? Or being told Des was so boring, kinda like what people are predicting about Caila? Just remember this column come summertime. It’s easy to say now you’re not gonna watch, but when it starts back up, and the spoilers go up, and you see guys you think are hunky, and you hear about possible places they’re traveling, and when you hear about whatever drama there will be, you’ll tune in and follow along.
On Friday, US Weekly finally broke something relevant to this franchise and that’s that Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers’ brother, Jordan Rodgers, is going to be a contestant on Caila’s season. This is what US Weekly is good for. Only if it’s celebrity related, or, if there’s a returning contestant. I’ve got 5 guys right now. They’re all average joe’s with no name value in the celebrity world, hence the reason US Weekly will not break exclusives on any other contestants for her season. That’s not what they do. Unless it’s “celebrity” related, they don’t break contestants. But thanks for adding one more to my list guys. I appreciate it. I will be releasing some of Caila’s guys next week. You know I say this every season, but there’s never any rhyme or reason to when I release the contestants. Some I hold on to for months and don’t release them til later, some I release right away when I get them. There are five I could release today if I wanted to but I don’t need to. No one else is even talking about the next season, or hearing about possible locations, or posting guys that’ll be on the show. Stuff like that is also very visible on social media if you look hard enough, that’s why I’m never in a rush to post anything in regards to contestants. By the end of Caila’s filming, you’ll know every guy and every spoiler, just like you do on almost all seasons. So stay tuned and keep it here all “off season” for your Caila spoilers.
I mentioned this in Thursday’s video chat, but if you haven’t read it already, I suggest you read Jade’s blog post from last week about being raped as a teenager. One thing I always said over and over again when it came to Jade’s Playboy past was that I never understood it. It’s one thing to do a sexy photo shoot, maybe do Maxim where you’re topless but covering your breasts with your arm or something like that. But to see both of Jade’s fully nude Playboy pictorials, then see how she was on social media with the Chive girl pics, and the numerous bikini shots with D-list Vanderpump people versus her persona on the “Bachelor” and BIP, something always seemed off. They weren’t matching up. Now that I know what she went through as a teenager, I get it now. I don’t know anybody that’s been raped or sexually assaulted, but you read enough stories of women who have talked about it, and essentially all of them end up saying you begin to devalue your body, you blame yourself, you get depressed, etc. Jade also admitted her home life wasn’t great at the time either and she was rebelling. So it’s definitely a good read, and for me at least, answered a lot of questions I had about why she turned to Playboy at one point in her life. Makes a hell of a lot more sense now.
Olivia was the main focus going in to the WTA last night, so I’ll ask you your opinion. What’d you think?
