Whoa. The reason I think UnREAL has been so successful in its first two seasons is because it pushes boundaries you normally don’t see on other shows. I’d say last week not only pushed the boundary, but did so in a way that was topical considering all the recent police shootings in the United States. I think before some people start claiming that was in bad taste or why would they do a storyline that hits so close to home, you need to understand a couple things: 1) This was filmed before the Orlando, Dallas, Baton Rouge, etc shootings ever happened. 2) The creator of the show and last week’s director broke down everything that went into the thought process and filming of last week’s episode here: http://www.ew.com/article/2016/07/19/unreal-season-2-shooting-episode. It’s a very interesting read that gives you an idea of how much prep and different talking points go into shooting a scene like that.
As you read in the link, tonight’s UnREAL is also doing something it’s never done in a little over 1 1/2 seasons, and that’s a time jump. Tonight’s episode will pick up 2-3 weeks later after last week’s events, and boy were there some doozies. You had Darius’ friend getting shot, the return of Adam making Rachel go crazy and be taken in to the hospital by her mom, Jeremy being blackmailed by Yael who is secretly recording their conversations, and last but certainly not least, Quinn ripping back the reigns of “Everlasting” from Coleman because she’s basically sleeping with the boss now and she can. Quinn’s first order of business is to get the show back to how SHE wants it, and that’s with romance. Check out this sneak peek of tonight’s episode:
So with only 3 episodes remaining and “Everlasting” heading down the home stretch, there are so many different directions the show can be headed that I don’t think many of us know what to expect. I know I don’t. I certainly didn’t see a police shooting happening last episode until I saw Rachel start running towards them. But with Quinn as Queen Bee again and not having Rachel for the time being as her lackey, it could be Quinn who ends up derailing the whole season. So many moving parts and only 3 weeks left. Buckle up. Gonna be a bumpy ride.
UnREAL airs on Lifetime tonight at 10/9c.
