American Idol 8

American Idol Recap – 3/10/09

I thought today was going to be a “Reality Roundup” but after spending almost two hours writing this recap, I think giving “Idol” its own column every Wednesday is the plan from here on out. So every Wednesday, expect an “American Idol” recap. Towards the end of the season, when we’re down to less than six contestants or so, I’ll probably just include the other reality shows afterwards. But until then, it’s “Idol” recap on Wednesdays, and your “Reality Roundup”, plus news and notes on Fridays. I think my “Idol” recap will be different and more opinionated than any other review you see on the Internet. I have no allegiances to networks and what not, so, I can pretty much say what I feel. If you sucked, you sucked. And I’ll say you did. I’ve just never seen a real good “Idol” recap anywhere on the internet, so I figured I’d do one. Most recaps just tell you what song people sang and what the judges said. This recap won’t really do that. Don’t have to agree with it, or you might agree with all of it. If anything, I would want you to come out of it thinking about some things that maybe you didn’t think of before.

Before we get into last nights performances, since I haven’t talked about “Idol” all season yet, lets go over a couple things beginning with the judges, in particular, the addition of Kara. Love it. In fact, I wish Kara would replace Paula. Hopefully, that’s the route “Idol” is headed since Paula’s contract expires at the end of this season. Paula adds nothing to this show whatsoever other than goofiness. Kara is much more accomplished in the music world, she’s much more relevant to today’s artists, and actually critiques the singers. Whereas Paula has none of that and half the time she’s loopy. Or riding an emotional roller coaster at 100mph. I’m hoping the reason they brought Kara in is because they think Paula will leave after this season and rather than start with someone fresh next season, the audience will have least warmed up to her. Lets face it, of the four judges and Seacrest, Paula is the most expendable person on that cast, no doubt about it. I seriously doubt this show loses viewers if Paula isn’t around next season. And oh yeah, Kara is hot.

I loved the whole “phone sex” scandal that “Idol” had before last nights show. They’ve always used 1-866-IDOLS 01 through 12 as their phone number for the contestants. Well, since they added the 13th contestant this season, you would assume that number would be 1-866-IDOLS 13. Uhhhh, nope. Couldn’t happen. Why? Because if you dial that number, it’s a phone sex line where you pay $1.99 to hear some overweight housewife breathe heavy into the phone so you can get off. Hence the reason they had to go with 1-866-IDOLS 36 for Alexis. That’s awesome. Probably want to do a little research next time before you start adding a bonus contestant to the finals, people. Can you imagine the uproar if no one would’ve caught that? Might’ve been the funniest thing to ever happen on a reality show. Well, other than Jason Mesnick trying to act like he’d never spoken to Molly in two months. Ohhhhhhhhh snap! Ha ha. Hey, I told you it’ll be a running joke til the end of time. And nice to see ABC have more fun at Jasons expense during “DWTS” on Monday night.

Every season it seems like there’s a theme amongst the judges that they’ll go with (mostly Simon). In the past it’s been stuff like “that was very Cabaret”, or they’ll harp on song selection (which they still do), Randy will go with his “pitchy” stuff, and Paula will talk about how well people dress if she doesn’t want to focus on their awful singing. Have you picked up on this years “go to” phrase yet? How about this one, “Who are you as an artist?” It’s driving me nuts. Yes, I feel it is relevant sometimes, but they are saying it way too much. Considering no one is allowed to sing an original song on this show until the final two (when a cheesy, motivational, religiously slanted ballad is written for them), let’s face it, the show is essentially for the best karaoke singer. It’s just some are better than others. Carrie Underwood you knew would be a star just by listening to her voice. But she still had to sing twelve weeks of cover songs. So the “Who are you as an artist?” bit gets a little old sometimes. Lets cut it out.

Here’s something I want to make perfectly clear when talking about “Idol” for the next couple months in this blog. There’s a reason why “Idol” has been the most watched show on television for the last few years. It’s because EVERYONE has an opinion on the contestants and the judges. You have to understand that someone you absolutely hate and would never consider listening to in a million years is also someone elses favorite singer. And vice versa. Yes, I have my favorites this season that I like, but that doesn’t mean the ones that aren’t my favorites can’t give good performances. When I judge a performance, it is strictly my opinion and my opinion only. You can agree or disagree. However, I would appreciate it that once people start commenting on the page about who they liked and didn’t like, that others are respectful enough to not start bad mouthing them for what they think. If you love Michael Sarver, and someone else thinks he’s a talentless redneck, so be it. What makes the show so popular is that two people can listen to the exact same performance from an individual and come out with two completely opposite opinions. Usually comes down to a matter of taste in music. Just please keep the sniping at each other to minimum.

For those of us that have watched “Idol” for a long time, as you now know, just because you’re the best singer doesn’t mean you’ll actually win. Taylor Hicks was the best “performer” of season 5, but Chris Daughtry was the best singer. And he finished 4th or 5th. So I always take that into consideration when making my predictions. Obviously, your backstory and your likability with Middle America plays just as big a role, if not bigger, than your singing ability sometimes. Taylor Hicks is a prime example of that. Clay Aiken was a better singer than Reuben, but Reuben was a big, cuddly teddy bear so people voted for him. I could go on and on with examples from past seasons, but you get the point. A lot of people tend to forget that America is the one voting for the winner, and for the most part, Americans aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer. Just because so-and-so gets eliminated doesn’t mean they were a bad singer. Just means that more people flooded the phone lines for someone else they liked better. Your singing ability helps, but lets make no mistake about it, this is a popularity contest as well.

I’ll tell you right now, my favorite contestants this season right now are (in no particular order) Danny Gokey, Megan Corkery, Alexis Grace, Scott MacIntyre, and Michael Sarver. And that is pretty much based on if they were to put out an album, I’d want to listen to it. The ones I didn’t mention, not so much. But it doesn’t mean they’re not talented. If I liked their performance, I’ll tell you why I liked it. If I didn’t like it, I’ll tell you why I didn’t. Just because the other contestants aren’t in my “favorites” list, doesn’t mean I won’t compliment them and it doesn’t mean I hate them. Probably just means, for whatever reason, their overall persona just doesn’t appeal to me. In fact, you’ll see this week I think the best performance last night was from someone who isn’t one of my favorites. So see? I can be fair. I will always acknowledge talent and a good performance. And just because those are my favorite contestants right now, doesn’t mean they will be when the season ends. Some others might start to grow on me. I can already tell you one person right now that I completely have no idea how I feel about. I don’t know whether I truly dislike them, or want to see them do well. I’m starting to lean one way thought. It’s baffling really. Ok, onto last nights performances. For the record, a lot of you probably don’t know this, but I’m a HUGE Michael Jackson fan. Always have been, and always will be. So I was very much looking forward to last nights performances.

Lil’ Rounds, “The Way You Make Me Feel”: It was good. She’s a good singer. This performance didn’t knock me over though. I thought she was better last Tuesday actually. And boy, does she have a booty on her. Good lord. When are they having Sir Mix-a-Lot week so she can sing “Baby Got Back?” One thing that bugs about Kara: When she speaks to the black singers, she tends to go a little “sister” on us.

Scott MacIntyre, “Keep the Faith”: Didn’t really care much for the performance because I thought he’d pick a more popular song. Maybe something like, “Say, Say, Say”. I don’t think he has to worry about going home because of the likability factor, but he won’t win this thing. I’m curious to see if he’s on the piano every week. Although last week he sang that Bruce Hornsby song better, obviously being “visually impaired” (how did I know that would be the phrase they were gonna run with this season), he just doesn’t look comfortable without his piano. He has staying power, probably make it at least half way through the show. Impossible not to cheer for a guy like this. Even as an MJ fan, I wasn’t even too familiar with the song.

Danny Gokey, “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)”: I’ll say this about Danny, and a lot of you know he is my favorite and I hope to see him win, the fact he’s gotten the “favorite” label from the judges could end up hurting him. Outside of Carrie Underwood, whoever they liked in the beginning has never really ended up winning. Good performance last night, and Simon was right about the dancing, it was awkward and corny. He’s not a dancer, he’s a singer. But at least he admits it. I liked it, he can “sing the phonebook” (as the judges like to tell us), but after hearing his version of “Hero” by Mariah Carey, he set the bar pretty high for himself. I thought that was one of the five best performances this show has ever had. In any season. Once again, just my opinion.

Michael Sarver, “You Are Not Alone”: One of my top three Michael Jackson songs of all-time. Love this song. And I was shocked that I liked the way Sarver sang it. Totally nothing like the original, but he had his own spin to it which I didn’t think was all that bad. I was more than surprised by this performance. He did it justice.

Jasmine Murray, “I’ll Be There”: Kinda bored by the performance. Did nothing for me. Got a good voice, but sometimes I feel like its not enough with her. I don’t know if she has the full package. I think she’ll be one of the first four or five to leave.

Kris Allen, “Remember the Time”: Thought Simon and Randy nailed it when they said it was the wrong song for his guitar. I mean, with the band playing so loudly in the background, you could barely hear any sound that his guitar was making. If he would’ve just sang the song without the guitar, it would’ve sounded exactly the same. The guitar added nothing. Very average performance, but chicks like him. Although, I’m sure they’re disappointed to see he has a wife. Probably will hurt him in the long run. There’s a reason Katharine McPhee never mentioned once during her season that she was doinking a guy 19 years older than her. Kinda takes away the appeal, you know?

Allison Iraheta, “Give In To Me”: Ok, I’ll admit it. I just don’t get it. I get that she’s sixteen, and I get that she has a good voice, but I’d take a seventeen year old Jordin Sparks over her any day of the week. I’m completely opposite of the judges on this girl. I think she’s kind of a screamer, trying to act way older than she is, and comes off a little arrogant. Probably wants to take back that comment last night about “cutting” too. Yikes. You could see some peoples faces behind the judges even grimace at that one. They can call her the underdog all they want, but she won’t win. I don’t even think she makes it halfway through.

Anoop Desai, “Beat It”: Terrible. Tried way too hard. And also, tried to look “hard” while singing the song. Like he was actually mad during his performance telling me to “Beat It.” That was straight out of a high school talent competition. Awful. Hated it. And you know what? He’ll be back another week. He ain’t goin’ home just yet.

Jorge Nunez, “Never Can Say Goodbye”: Bored by it. Not a recognizable song, didn’t do much with it, and pretty much a forgettable performance. He could be in trouble tonight.

Megan Corkrey, “Rockin Robin”: Love her but hated the song choice. Talk about a talent show performance. I’m not talking about the dancing, because that’s her quirkiness and she’s been doing that from the very beginning. I love her voice, her likability factor is through the roof, she’s the best looking female on the show this season, and, well, her mom is a MILF. But just to hear “Rockin Robin” on that stage last night reminded me of my 7th grade Lip Sync contest since someone performed that back in 1988. Just was too cutesy of a performance.

Adam Lambert, “Black or White”: This will be the most talked about contestant on the show this season, good or bad. You either love him or you hate him. There is no in between. Well, except with me right now. We’ve already seen pictures leaked on the internet with him dressed in drag and kissing other guys, so the song choice of “Black or White” didn’t surprise me in the least bit. Don’t think there wasn’t a subtle message he was trying to get across with that. To each their own. Whatever the case, it was the best performance of the night. Whether you think he’s too theatrical, over-the-top, or just flat out weird, he is the best “performer” the show has, and he’ll go far. This is the guy I’m completely torn on. He performed “Satisfaction” two weeks ago, and I still can’t decide if I hated it with a passion, or really liked it.

Yes, he has an entertainment background. He lives in Hollywood, was in “Wicked”, and obviously has been trained professionally before, so in that aspect, I wouldn’t mind seeing a guy like him succeed. This show has always been about giving someone a chance, and for a guy in his late 20’s who seemingly has paid his dues, it’s nice to see him perform. I know he’s a good singer, I know he’ll do well, but the “freak” factor will ultimately prevent him from winning the thing. Do I think he’ll get a record deal? Absolutely. But let’s remember who a majority of the people who vote on this show are: middle aged white people, probably leaning on the conservative side. As sad as it sounds, his look is basically what’ll cost him the title. If he wins, I’ll be the first to congratulate him. I wouldn’t have a problem with him winning whatsoever. I just don’t think he will. But I could see him in the final two or three. He is starting to grow on me.

Matt Giraud, “Human Nature”: Forgettable performance, and not in a bad way. He got screwed because he had to follow Adam. If this performance fell in between Anoop and Jorge’s, it would’ve gotten more praise than it did. He’s a really good singer, but the Justin Timberlake look is gonna get old for me, I already know it. Nothing wrong with trying to emulate the guy, but its almost too much. I like him though. Just kinda got lost in the shuffle last night.

Alexis Grace, “Dirty Diana”: She got screwed because her performance was up against the clock. The judges didn’t give her more than a sentence because they were running out of time. I thought it was good, not great. Solid performance. Definitely has no chance of getting eliminated tonight, but might want to pull back on the sexiness factor. Her likability is big right now because of the “cute kid” factor, but it’s almost like she’s trying too hard to shed the good girl image. I still don’t know which female I like better, her or Megan. It’s close. I’ll get back to you on this. I think Alexis has a better recording voice, but Megan might have more of the total package. Tough one.

So now it’s time for our first ever “Reality Steve Top and Bottom 3 Performances of the Night”. These are going to be my personal choices as to which ones I liked, and disliked, the most. Doesn’t mean it’s who I think will end up in the bottom three. You might even see a performance I have in my top three end up as one of the people I predict in the bottom three. This will be followed by my prediction of who I think WILL be in the bottom 3, and who will get eliminated. Complete guessing on my part.

Reality Steve’s Top 3 Performances:

1. Adam Lambert
2. Matt Giraud
3. Danny Gokey

Reality Steve’s Bottom 3 Performances:

1. Anoop Desai
2. Jorge Nunez
3. Megan Corkrey

They said at the beginning of the show that two people are getting eliminated tonight. Then mentioned at the end that there will be a twist that they’ve never done before. I don’t know what that is, sorry. So here’s who I think will be in the bottom 3.

Reality Steve’s Bottom 3 Prediction:

1. Jorge Nunez
2. Allison Iraheta
3. Jasmine Murray

Reality Steve’s Prediction of Who Will Get Eliminated: Jorge Nunez. If they eliminate two, then Jorge and Jasmine Murray are my two picks. Although, as much as I would hate to see it, Megan could easily be in the bottom three and replace Jasmine. There are enough people who might think the performance last night was too cheesy. I hope not.

That’s it. Back on Friday with your “Reality Roundup” covering all the other shows I’m watching including, “Dancing with the Stars”, “Survivor”, “Celebrity Apprentice”, “The City”, “Sober House”, and a few other tidbits. Any questions, comments, emails, praises, criticisms, email me at steve@realitysteve.com. You can join the “I Love Reality Steve” Facebook group, add me as a friend, or both, by clicking on the links down the right hand column. See you Friday.

    Great post Steve!

#44 IHeartMaddie – Just out of curiosity, which season were you wrong on the winner and who did you think would win instead?

Like many have said in their comments, I think Danny and Adam will be the final two – I’ll be shocked if that doesn’t happen. They’re both in a league of their own. I really hope Jorge gets a second chance, he was a bit off last night, but I’ve loved him throughout the season so far.

I’m going to have to disagree regarding Kara – she SERIOUSLY rubs me the wrong way. Like others have pointed out, she usually just copies Randy, she goes on and on for too long most of the time and just seems really smug…I would rather not see her next season. Paula seems to be on better meds this season, although last night was really loopy.

Generally speaking, I think this might be the season with the most talent. A lot of stand-outs who seem to have the “whole package” thing going. This is the first time I see as many as 5-6 contestants I could see as successful recording artists which get radio time. Usually, the majority of the group just seems like people with very good voices who do karaoke very well, but not major star potential.

This is going to be a tough year, all of them are so good. I love Adam (don’t you think he looks a little like Elvis?) and Danny, not too found of Jasmine and Megan. I like Scott too, but I hope he gets voted through for his talent and not sympathy.

As for the judges, I don’t like Kara. She knows her stuff, but needs to shorten up a bit, geez, she’s way too lengthy with the responses. Are we going to run overtime every week because of her?

I think tonight’s surprise will be that in addtition to the person with the lowest votes leaving, the judges will also let one go and it will be Anoop, since Simon already said he regrets making it a top 13.

Kris is adorable, but the matching husband wife aprons were a bit much. I would have liked to see him do an acoustic version of “Remember the Time” I think it would have been cool like Nathaniel’s acoustic Disturbia during Hollywood week.
I haven’t made up my mind about Adam yet. I love him and hate him all at the same time.
My faves last night were Danny, Michael, and Allison
Not faves were Megan, Jasmine, and Anoop (I still voted for him though because he can sing, he just chose a song that no one except Michael Jackson can sing unless they take it in a completely different direction i.e. Billie Jean the Chris Cornell/David Cook version.)

Ummmm… Fantasia (for some unknown reason) and both Davids were ADORED by the judges from the very beginning… so I just have to disagree with you about that. Carrie was not the only one to be supported by the judges from the beginning and then win it all.

Let me just say… gay or straight (although I guess right now, it seems pretty clear), Adam is HOT. Oh, and I’m a girl, BTW. I don’t think he’s a freak. The nail polish I hate, yes, but he is BEAUTIFUL. My goodness. Don’t tell my fiance!

AND, I think he’s an amazing performer and singer! And when he talks, he’s just such a friendly guy… again, doesn’t come across as freaky.

He and Matt are my faves. I never even made the JT connection til they said that last night, but I still don’t really see it. He does kinda (his mannerisms and style of music) remind me of Elliott. Ahhhh… I love Elliott! He’s my fave all time idol.

So there’s my pointless input 😀

Oh, and Megan needs a hair trim. Dead ends are NOT our friends, Megan!

    March 11, 2009 at 2:05 PM

Oh… I was talking about Matt (not Adam) when comparing to Elliott.. obviously, lol..

Never Can Say Goodbye is unrecognizable? You’re joking, right? Or was it just before your time? I think bottom three are Jasmine, Anoop and Jorge, with Jasmine going home.

    Hi Steve and bloggers!

I love this blog, and I loved all of the previous comments! I wanted to tell everyone that this 60 year old loves Adam. I think that he is so talented, and he just might be the illegitimate son of Axel Rose and Elvis Presley…lol!

Gadfrey Daniels, STEVE! I can’t believe how much we agree and disagree on many opinions and for different reasons. My bottom three tonight……Megan, Anoop, Jorge.

So far I disagree about Allison and I’m the past middle age American woman here, how ’bout that. So far she has proved she can take a theme night song and make it her own. I don’t think that young ‘un has any ‘fake’ to her at all, authentic through and through. If she can stand up to what she did last night, I think she’s got a good run of being in the Top 3 at the end.

I think we agreed on Matt G.’s “Human Nature” or maybe not. While it was not flashy, I liked it a LOT.

As far as Paula Abdul goes, I wondered why last night especially she was making such an effort to put together as many cohesive sentences as possible although she does not get my credit for delivery of said sentences. What you said makes a bit of sense to me about all that judges stuff!

I have no clear- cut favorite at this time. I like to follow the journey from week to week and you were so on about Alexis getting short shrifted last night and the judges were even ‘cranky’ at that time. It is so fun to get my own opinion and post it over at my regular site and then to come over here and read what you have written. REALITY STEVE, you are something good, man! I’m a ‘newbie’ here but do so very much enjoy your writing.

I’m a Matt Giraud Fan. I love his soulful bluesy style. I think his best performance yet was the Georgia on my mind song. Love Danny Gokey too! I think this season has the best group ever. Wish you would do a column on DWTS steve!

    Steve

The website http://www.votefortheworst.com has two Idol summaries after each singing day (one by “Dave” and one by “Dr. Chan”). They’re a lot more cynical than you but since you said you’d ‘never seen a really good Idol recap…’ I thought I’d point you there.

Am I the only person in America who was impressed by Anoop’s performance? Maybe…

  14. kayefun

    March 11, 2009 at 3:08 PM

Oh What the hey, Reality Steve, this is what I posted at my regular place at 8:07 this morning……..

American Idol last night: LOVE the ‘home’ features of each contestant. HATE the show runs over time. CURIOUS about the ‘new rules change’ coming into effect tonight and HOPING since Simon Cowell indicated it would be about the judges…..that it will be to get the judges to shut up a bit more…..thus the show can run on time.

I was wrong that a lot of singers would ‘fall down, go boom’ on Michael Jackson theme week. Overall, they all sang pretty good as far as I’m concerned. There were some standouts. I didn’t catch all the theme weeks coming up, but one of them is GRAND OL’ OPRY and now I don’t know if a pack of singers is going to have an AWFUL theme week or not. Is the competition this year just that GOOD?

WHO IS SAFE IN MY OPINION: Adam singing “Black Or White” put his musical theatre experience to perfect performance. Allison’s “Give It To Me” was outstanding…ITA, it is hard to believe she is only 16. Danny’s PYT (Pretty Young Thing) the judges liked and while it was a good performance, I agreed with the concept of his PYT beginning, but I didn’t like his execution of that beginning until he jumped off on it. Lil is probs safe going first w/The Way You Make Me Feel.

Then the lines begin to blurrrrrrrrrr for me as to who next is safe. My personal favorites ‘sleeper’ performances of the night was Matt G. at the piano w/Human Nature and Scott at the piano with Keep The Faith. HOWEVER, we got a theme week with a song catalogue to choose from and the judges berate Scott’s choice of a much ‘unknown’ Michael Jackson song (which was a very good song) and then berate Anoop later on for doing such a known, signature, iconic, untouchable Michael Jackson tune of “Beat It” cuz there is only one Michael Jackson! Well for me, “Beat It” is more of an ‘ear worn’ song. Cuz when it was popular, it played 24/7 – 365 and just beat our ears down. The song choice theme week thingy drives me nutty!

Going into who I definitely don’t think is safe…NOT SAFE….Anoop, Jorge with “Never Can Say Goodbye” – he vocalized the heck outta that tune, but in it’s time, it was recorded by so many various artists, it is like a standard of a certain decade which would make it ‘old fashioned’ to the judges. Megan couldn’t translate her own artistic style throughout w/Rockin’ Robin, not sure she is safe at all. Not at all sure if Jasmine’s I’ll Be There was enought to keep here there. Michael did a solid job of You’re Not Alone, just not sure it was enough.

Kris did some interesting things playing his guitar w/Remember The Time. I sure hope he stays. Then finally Alexis with Dirty Diana, but singing last when the show is running long and then giving that gal the odd voting number of 36 so that people would be able to vote for 13 contestants was a MESS!

So two have to go home and I’m thinking it will be between Anoop, Jorge, Megan and Jasmine. Whew that was a long post. Sorry! Well, maybe not!

I haven’t read all the posts so sorry if someone else already mentioned this but didn’t Megan’s ‘Caw Caw’ at the end of her song just crack you up??
I love Megan and I thought the Cawing was great even though it was waaay cheesy. lol
The fact that she actually had the guts or quirkiness or whatever you call it to do it just made me like her more.

63 drchris06: I fully agree with you about Anoop. I love him. Bad song choice last night, but for some reason, the guy just makes me smile. And I just do not get Megan. If the judges call her “relevant’ one more time, I’m going to puke.

  17. Steph

    March 11, 2009 at 3:51 PM

I agree on Kara. I like her soo much more!!

I think these 3 were the best last night (no particular order):
    Danny Gokey
    Kris Allen
    Adam Lambert

    Didn’t like Megan’s song.

I think Anoop is gone tonight.

    Love ya, RS!

I, too, have always been a big MJ fan. I was sorta disappointed at the song choices last night on Idol, and it made me think back of the many songs and video MJ has made over the years.

One of my very favorites was “Smooth Criminal” from the 1988 “Bad” album. This has to be one of the GREATEST videos ever made, with an intricate storyline and superb dancing. For those of you that are DWTS fans, this video is a must-see! I picked through the several copies on YouTube, and chose this one for the link:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYyGV6QHzDs

1988 was a great year for music videos: the genre was really getting going full force with MTV & VH1. Another great video from that time was Steve Winwood’s “Roll With It” shot in sepia overlay. Check it out, too while in YouTube. You’ll be glad you did!

Steve, I don’t understand how you can be so anti producer influencing the outcome/appearance of the outcome of a reality show when it comes to The Bachelor but not for American Idol. I was shocked when reading your article to see what a fan of Danny Gokey you are. I expected an extended rant about how the producers and Danny are using the death of his wife to pimp him up and get him extra votes. I agree that there are not many quality recaps out on the internet, but I think Slezak’s on EW is an exception. His Idolotry videos are hilarious. I disagree with many of his opinions, mainly Matt Giraud, but I enjoy his articles too. Anyway, I surprisingly completely disagree with you. My favorites are Alexis, Adam, Kris, and Matt. I can’t stand Megan and Gokey. I don’t see the appeal of Jorge, Lil, or Sarver. Anyway, I didn’t intend to go on so long. I just wanted to voice my surprise about your differing viewpoint than with the bachelor. I enjoy your blog.

Anyone know what they were talking about at then end, when they said the elmination had to do with the judges as well?

It looks like they’re going to have a one-time only veto in case they think the public “got it wrong.” They’re only allowed to use it once, though.

Steve, I ditto the comments about the Vote for the Worst website. They are more cynical, but it is hilarious to read. The forum section is sheer craziness! I of course, will continue to read your blog every Wednesday though!

For what it’s worth, I too am a middle aged conservative woman who likes Adam. I also like Danny and Alexis. Allison is an amazing 16 year old singer, but she’s a bit odd.

Should be interesting what the “twist” is actually going to be.

Egads. I thought the Melissa obsessed people could move on…..guess not!

I mentioned earlier, I think Kara has an uncanny resemblence and voice to Julia Roberts..anyone else see that? Thanks.

Well, I’m a middle aged white woman..but not conservative. I love Adam. I do think Steve has a point about the voting though. I think the judges are going to have some new way of saving someone, perhaps having a runoff song for the bottom 2 or 3 and then making the final choice.

Regarding Megan, I can’t stand the arm tatoo..the entire length of her arm! It drives me nuts. Please Megan, wear sleeves! I am also getting turned off by her quirkiness. That sound she did at the end of Rockin Robin was weird..just my opinion.

Right now, the only female I really like is Lil. I think a guy is going to win this year again. I think Anoop has a lot of potential. Matt looks just like Michael Buble to me..doesn’t anyone else see it? I like him a lot, as I do Danny. But Adam stole the show last night. I just wish he hadn’t worn black nail polish..just because some people may not vote for him because of it. But I love him.

I first heard of Reality Steve during the last Bachelor and read all the blogs and interviews then… now I am excited to keep reading these blogs in regards to other reality shows! One of my favorite tv/celebrity websites to check on in the mornings, along with TMZ.

Hi, Carolyn, Well, I’m a white 66 yr. old mom of 2 and grandmom of 5. I’m just not judgemental ..I look at the person, not their sexual preferences an/or nationality or religion either.

Adam has the Elvis good looks (someone posted they would like to see him do an Elvis song..I agree..I saw Elvis 3 times in the ’60’s). I adore Danny, his sprit, his personality and demeanor. I intend to pick a favorite female singer tonight. I only have Danny, Adam and Matt that I really like so far.

I just had to write again after seeing so many people write about Adam’s likeness to Elvis. I couldn’t agree more! And I don’t think that it is intentional, he just has IT.

    Lil Was Fabulous! Great Voice!!!
Danny Danny Danny…. He makes chills go down my body! And i LOVE how he matches his glasses to his outfits!!! Hey Steve… slip him my number?? 😉
Ditto on Kris… but man he’s got a gorgeous wife!! Wouldn’t mind seein him stick around to see her!!! And did anyone notice how PISSED she was at the end!?!? Haha!! Typical Girl! *shakes head* (insecurities much?)
I’m in LOVE with Megan (Maybe cuz i’m a single mom, so i’m partial to her…) I think she’ll stick around, She’s BEAUTIFUL! Duh!!! I just wish she didn’t have the tats!! What IS up with that!?
Can’t Stand Allison, Anoop, Jorge, or Matt…
Partial to Michael… I’m down here in North Texas with all the “Oilfield Trash” guys!!! Oh, and my company does business with his company (Nabors Drilling)
Adam- GREAT Performer…. Although i can’t STAND the “dark and twisted” side!!! PLEASE get rid of the black nails sweetheart!!!!

*Oh crap, i just realized i’m writing this b4 i’ve even watched tonights elimination… *shrugs* OH WELL!!! Guess i’ll go watch it!

On another subject, what do you know about the reported marriage problems of Jon and Kate Gosselin?

  32. Carolyn

    March 11, 2009 at 9:24 PM

GeorgiaPeach..we agree..my favorites are Adam, Matt, and Danny.

    March 11, 2009 at 9:46 PM

Carolyn, I also like Kris..I need him to really ‘bring it’ though next week. And Megan needs to step it up and they could go to the top 5 imo.

RS nailed the ones eliminated..Jasmine and Jorge.

So, now we know the new twist. The judges have one vote to keep someone who was eliminated for another round…that’s how I interpreted it, and it can only be used one time. So, I assume they will wait until the top 5 to use it?( as they kept talking about when Chris Daugherty and Katherine McPhee were eliminated and it was too early.)

    Ok… that was a waste of time…
I think our Idols sing better then Kanya or Kelly did tonight. Maybe they just sound better on radio… I dont know…
Kanye needed to pull his pants up… That was gettin on my nerves. I was just waitin for them suckers to fall to his knees! Haha!
Jasmine is SUCH a beautiful girl with poise and a heart for singing. I think this is just the beginning for her.
Jorge… Glad he’s going back to Puerto Rico…. Is this American Idol or Puerto Rico Idol? I forget!? I guess they should change the name to World Idol maybe!?

Puerto Rico is an American Territory.. They can vote in our primary elections even.

I think Adam is adorable, but I just cant get into his voice. Good performance, but he hasnt wowed me. Im not sure why Im not into him as much as everyone else is? Maybe he is to show tuney for me, Im not sure yet.

I love Dannys voice though. I would listen if had songs out. Not sure what type of artist Adam would be? Anyone know?

I like Paula. She brings a warmth and querkiness to the show and frankly, I think she has alot to contribute. If it came down to her or Kara, I would choose Paula anytime. You have to admit she and Simon are hilarious sometimes. I like how she always tries to find something positive to say to the contestants. Hey..why do you think that the show has been on for 8 seasons? It has a great formula…not the least is the right combination of personalities and experience of the judges.

BTW, Steve, check out some of Adam’s performances he has on You Tube. I think he can sing about any type of song. I don’t think he would be a rocker although no doubt he could pull off an entire CD of that type of music.

#83 peach – they said they can only use it once for the first 6 shows UNTIL the final 5, after that they can’t use it.

I’m sorry that Jorge didn’t get through, I was hoping he’d get a second chance. This is a tough year, the finalists are all soooo talented.

  40. Carolinagirl

    March 12, 2009 at 8:29 AM

It looks like the final three will be Danny, Adam and Matt..
as of right now.I think Matt sounds like Michael Buble.
Of course, it is very early in the season and I have
close to zero luck in predicting the final ones!

I think some people that will be eliminated this season
could have been talented enough to win other seasons.
Just some unbelievable talent. It think we will see many
recording contracts come out of this season.

I have been lurking here for years…just wanted to turn you all on to another fun website if you love Idol – http://www.votefortheworst.com

Ok please don’t start hating on me Adam fans. I initially liked Adam my only problem with him is to me he screams and is a bit too phrentic in his performances. I still like him but am I the only person besides Simon who thinks he screams a bit too loud? Its like he has only one volume- VERY LOUD.

http://www.votefortheworst.com has a really good and HILARIOUS recap each week…my favorite so far (sorry)

    My top four picks:
    Alexis
    Allison
    Danny
    Matt

They will pimp out Adam and Lil until the end of time and I will bet you money if they have to use the judges save it will be on one of them (or Danny).

Theme phrases this year also include SWAGGER by RJ. Everyone has a swagger this year. Use it as a verb, noun, adjective…pretty much any way you want.
    PIPES. ’nuff said
    More later.

Maybe that is why I havent jumped on the Adam train! Im trying to figure out why I dont really like his vocals to much.

    March 12, 2009 at 1:33 PM

    #92 I agree.
I just am not into his vocals.
After reading how good everyone says he is, I decided I would watch him with a new perspective next week.
However, I read what Steve said about some videos and pictures, and decided to check them out.

BIG MISTAKE. He will not be getting my votes.

Yes, the #”13′ controversy . . very funny! That sex line sure knows how to take advantage of Idol fans with slippery fingers.
    Thanks for the posts, Steve.
I blog about Idol, Dancing, The Hills and anything reality as well! Love reality TV! And I enjoy hearing all the comments!

seriously… NO ONE else sees that Jorge looks just like the potentially illegitimate son of Ben Stiller’s character in Meet the Fockers!?!?! Really??? I KNOW you guys can see it, too. Fess up!!

Carolinagirl, I totally agree about Matt sounding like Michale Buble, and to me, he looks like him too.

Suez, I am not into Megan either. I think the only female I like is Lil. The winner this season has to be a guy.

The girls are really weak this season. Danny is truly talented and should win.I’m not digging Adam’s dark “twilight” side and his pictures on the internet. Danny has better stage presence.
