“Dr. Reality Steve” & a Boatload of “Reader Emails”

Hi Steve,

Great recap as usual! I especially loved the part about the lactating through the light purple shirt. I’m surprised you didn’t comment on the button down combo with flip flops. Terrible! My fiance walked into the room during that scene, and he said “is that guy sweating through his nipples?”

Like a lot of people this season, I’ve definitely lost interest. I usually watch the episodes online after the fact, but yesterday’s was the only episode I watched this season. I just had it on as background noise while I was finishing up some work at him. I’m still reading your blog religiously though, thanks for making the season interesting!

Anyway, onto my question. From the interview you linked in your recap, Chris Harrison says that the lead chooses how many roses to give out at the ceremony. Is that really true? I can’t imagine how that’s not a producer decision…

Thanks as always!

Comment: I’m sure that is a combo of both. The producers know going in to each ceremony who the lead is into and who they aren’t into, so I’m sure it’s more of a, “Hey, why don’t we just get rid of three guys this week rather than prolonging it,” and Desiree agrees. They know who’s staying and who’s going. Could they have had six guys go to Madeira next week? Of course. And that 6th guy would’ve just gotten another free vacation, but for whatever reason, they decided to take five.

So what happened to the punch in the season promo? I figured it was between Ben and Michael but apparently not. I can’t see why they wouldn’t show that entire sequence for drama purposes.

Comment: Yet another thing they tease in the promo that’s never shown. Happens every season without fail.

I’ve been watching this show for a long time but only seriously started following since Jason’s season. For some reason it took me this long (as of yesterday) for the whole thing to “click” in my brain that this show is crazy. I think it took a bad season to take my blinders off. I was wondering if some of the leads think this is great and all in the beginning but as their own season gets closer to the end they start getting cold feet proposing to someone they hardly know? The drama seems forced and irrational this season and I feel like after seeing Drew act like a baby I am not interested in seeing him as the bachelor.

Also, do you think that the guys towards the end start freaking out themselves when they end up being the final 1 or 2? Do you think Brooks was really set in his head that I’m going to marry this girl? I don’t see it.

Also, why don’t you think Chris would be considered before Drew as the Bachelor? I kind of like Chris better than Drew despite the love poems. But honestly, I’d rather watch Juan Pablo who I can barely understand than watch either of them.

Comment: I’m sure plenty of them get cold feet and start thinking, “What the hell am I doing?” but then go through with it anyway because they are essentially pressured to.

Just because Brooks proposes at the end and is engaged doesn’t mean they’re gonna get married. I’ve been saying that for weeks.

I’m sure Chris is being considered, as are others. My opinion though is that they’ll go with Drew for the reasons I listed in today’s column.

I laughed my ass off reading your description of James going into the room and sitting between Michael and Juan Pablo. And annoying Michael was leaning away from him like he had germs. Michael and Drew = the most annoying people ever. SO dramatic and argumentative. James, sorry to say, is the only one being honest about what he’s thinking this show will do for him in the end.

Comment: I agree. James was being realistic about the show, but in this fantasy world that a lot of viewers to this show live in, verbalizing that is a no-no and your attention is supposed to be on Desiree every moment of the day. James busted up that fantasy, so he could no longer be around.

Do the contestants get to explore the countries they are in — on their own, without cameras — when they are not on dates or at ceremonies?

Why don’t the producers like Jef?

Does ABC try to figure out your sources for the spoilers — or have they given up on that?

P.S. I like Des a lot and think she was a good choice.

Comment: No. You’re basically locked up in a hotel room outside of getting time to go to the gym with your handler.

Plenty of reasons.

I don’t know. I’m sure they’re always trying to find who gives me info but that’s essentially an impossible task.

Hey Steve…couple of Questions

1. I was wondering why the dates closer to hometowns you have the least info on? What is up with this Brooks thing that happens next week that you reverence with the oh brooks brooks brooks !?Are you not completely sure of the info? you could tell us what you been hearing that makes you say that.

2. Also I heard that Drew leaving has something to do with his dad dying any truth to that? And I totally don’t see why Des kept Micheal I would have sent him home last week (along with Ben ) on that two on one with Ben his behavior was ridiculous!

Comment: 1) It’s definitely more difficult to get info on the dates right before hometowns. Some seasons I have great info on them, some I don’t. I never know. There’s really know rhyme or reason to it. I’m only as good as the info I get from others. What I have about Brooks has nothing to do with next week’s date or anything that happens in the episode. It’s just something I was given that I thought I’d share with you since I’m pretty sure you’ll find it, ummmm, interesting. And I’d do it if I got this about any contestant. This is not some vendetta against Brooks. I don’t know the guy. But I’d say he’s a rather important figure on the show this season, and this is something that people who follow this show I’m sure would like to see.

2) As far as I know, Drew’s dad isn’t dead so I have no idea where that is coming from. A couple months ago he started following my Facebook Fan Page, so unless something has happened since, I’m pretty sure he’s still alive.

Here was my question on the whole James scenario… do producers ride in the car back with the guys from the group dates? Bc if so, then my theory was they heard “the talk” in the car and thought it’d make a great story line and found someone who could be their mouthpiece for the Crazies who think the show is real and become their advocate and get offended for Des, blah blah blah (i.e., Drew).

My other thought was how, yet again, this show is basically admitting how fake it is when the storyline promotes “secret” conversations of their own contestants being caught talking about how the show will further their “careers” (first Ben, now James) and breaking that fourth wall (if there ever was one). They are basically admitting everything you call the show out on is correct, but then try to appease the Crazies and say, “No, we really are a show about finding love” by stoking the indignation of their advocate (again, Drew). What a joke.

Comment: I’m sure the producers absolutely had something to do with getting the guys to talk about James and Mikey’s car conversation. That’s their job. They’ll present it as, “Hey, what do you think of Mikey telling James they can party it up in Chicago when this is over? How does that make you feel that you’re here for Des and these guys don’t seem to care?”

I’ve been a fan of this show for as long as I can remember. I know it’s scripted but with likable Bachelorettes and Bachelors like Emily, Ashlee and Sean it was fun to watch.

But this season is horrible. During past seasons I wouldn’t answer any calls or make plans on Monday’s from 8-10 to watch the show but this season I have stopped watching entirely because I am so uninterested. I don’t even care enough to read your spoilers (sorry, not your fault).

Des is probably a nice girl and I can’t figure out exactly WHY i’m so uninterested in her and these group of guys but I seriously can’t sit through 2 hours a week of this season. Ugh so awful.

Anyways, I think the franchise is screwed if they pick one of this seasons guys to be the bachelor because no one cares, even the die hard fans (yup i’ll admitt it) like myself. You’ve probably been asked already, but do you think it is likely that they will use a past season “loser” like Roberto since this group of guys are all duds?

Comment: Well, Roberto has a Playmate girlfriend last time I checked, so unless they’ve broken up and I haven’t heard, I don’t think it’ll be him. I don’t think they’re gonna hit the panic button after one down season and cast outside the family. It will be someone we are familiar with, whether it be one of Des’ guys or maybe reaching back and getting someone else from a past season. I’m still sticking with Drew though for now.

Hi Steve,

Been reading since Brad 2.0 and now writing for the first time. I live in Barcelona and thought it was HILARIOUS where the guys’ hotel was. It wasn’t even in Barcelona; it was in a town further south called Sitges which is known as the gay mecca of Spain. I just thought it was funny considering how much has been made of the huge “bromance” element this season – maybe they got a little wild while they were in Sitges 😉

Also, is it just me or is Chris the most normal guy by a long shot? Yes, he’s a total dork and I don’t know why he seems to think he’s Shakespeare, but he’s the only one who seems genuine to me and like a real person (unlike Brooks who needs to come out of the closet ASAP and seems to be an attention whore). Anyway, just wondering if you had any dirt on Chris or thought he was a good guy too (in spite of the poetry).

Comment: Never been to Barcelona but had no idea about Sitges. Interesting note though.

Haven’t really heard much on Chris other than he doesn’t win.

Hi Steve! First off, thanks for answering my question on one of your columns a couple of weeks ago, it made my day! I have another question for you 🙂

What do you think about Chris (besides from being kind of dull) and Des’s connection on the show? It seems like he’s pretty genuine when comparing him to Brooks. Speaking of that, has there been any ‘trouble in paradise’ between Brooks and Des since their engagement? He’s kind of creepy and seems like a phony. I guess Des picked him probably based off his physical appearance, right? Anyway, thanks for the hilarious columns, I always look forward to reading them!

Comment: Has there been trouble in paradise? Not that I’ve heard. I don’t know why Des picked him. We’ll have to wait until they’re together to get that answer.

Hi RS,

It’s a telling sign of how boring this season is that people care more about who is going to be the next Bachelor than Des right now. Seems like everyone’s already moved on.

My question is, if the producers don’t think they have a good candidate from this season, do you think they’d go back to an older season, like they did with Emily? Obviously Emily was a unique case and Drew/Chris are the obvious front runners, but do you think they’d consider that? If so, who do you think they might consider? (Obviously not Jef)

Going off of that, if it hadn’t been for Emily, who do you think would have been the next Bachelorette off of Ben’s season?

Thanks and happy birthday to Olivia! You are such a great uncle to those kids! I can tell you’d make a great dad.

Comment: I think they’ll keep it in the family, and that’s about as far as I can go. I’d have to go back through past seasons and contestants to even contemplate who would be on their list if they decided to go with someone from a previous season.

From Ben’s season? I think Kacie would’ve been the girl to get it. She was most well liked by the masses just based off response I saw. Lindzi was a zero, and Nikki has essentially fallen off the face of the earth since her season ended. Good for her. I don’t even think I’ve seen or heard her name in a tweet or Instagram picture since the WTA taping, and that’s pretty impressive considering how many of these people constantly post pictures of themselves any time they hang out with cast members.

Hey, I just want to say that I love all your commentary and your site.

I think the reason this season is such a bust is because Des and the guys take themselves TOO SERIOUSLY! I mean, relax a little people. I saw an interview with Jillian Harris and Wes, and they’re still friends. She said that a grown man coming on “The Bachelorette” to specifically find love is not the kind of person she’d want to marry anyway. I completely agree. Even JP who MARRIED the bachelorette Ashley said that he thought she was crazy when after the first rose ceremony she said that she thinks her future husband is there.

At the end of the day, it’s an experience. And if you end up with love – great. You could tell from the very first episode that Des takes herself too seriously with the guy asking her to “the fantasy suite”. Was it inappropriate, sure. Was her reaction a little over the top, definitely. The guys are so annoying as well. So not connected to reality.

When I saw the promos, I was thinking that James is an ass. After watching the episode, I’m kinda on his side. Maybe he’s along for the ride, but at the end of the day, most of the guys are. As long as you’re not coming with clear ill intentions, then you’re good. And if you don’t develop a connection, sooner or later you’re gonna go. Is it that bad that it might be a bit later?

I really liked a lot of the guys from Jillian’s season because they seemed much more grounded and realistic. So did she. She seemed to take it all with a grain of salt, and didn’t take herself super seriously. I’d love to see another bachelorette like her. Not like Des, or Emily (who also took herself WAY too seriously).

Thanks again!

Comment: Good points.

I am sure by now someone else has emailed you about the town of Sitges where the guys stayed outside of Barcelona (Hotel Melia Sitges)…. But in case no one has, I wanted to chime in. Sitges is a gorgeous seaside town close to Barcelona. It is also a world famous gay resort community. Given the viewer feedback about the guys this season, I found this to be an amusing coincidence. 🙂

Happy 4th!!

Comment: Yes, actually about 10 emails ago. So the tote board now looks like this:

“Drew is gay”: 4
“Sitges is the gay part of Barcelona:” 2
“Brooks is gay”: 1

Hi Steve! Hope all is well & Happy 4th of July!

More of a comment. Drew is 100% gay. Maybe he’s on the DL or hasn’t come “out” as yet but when watching last night with 2 of my gay male friends both said he definitely is gay.

Not that is matters if he’s gay but if he’s the next bachelor, I’m out. I’m barely watching Des & won’t be able to stomach ANY of the final 4 as the lead. I can find better things to do like clean, read or better yet get a life. Show is beyond tired.

Comment: Guess I spoke to soon. Drew now out to a commanding lead with 5 “He’s gay” references. This will not be a photo finish.

Hi Steve,

I remember from earlier teasers that there is a scene where James is crying to Desiree that one of the guys hit him. They also showed a teaser where it looked like one guy rose up out of a chair and punched another guy. I thought it was Drew. The last time we see James before the rose ceremony James leaves the group and walks down a hallway. Drew follows him shortly thereafter. James is gone now, and we never saw that punch out or the aftermath where he cried to Des. They sure hyped that a lot to never show it. Are they hoping we will forget about it? Since they are now grooming Drew to be the next Bachelor, maybe they don’t want him tarnished by this attack scene?

All in all, I like Des’ guys, but it does seem that this group insists on having a scapegoat. Neither Ben nor James seemed to be villains, at least not on the order of a Bentley or sparkly Tiarra. Michael G has taken too many performance enhancing drugs. I know he is a prosecutor, but he has been overly aggressive from the beginning. He still has no discernible connection with Des. He’s too focused on other guys. I like Chris, Brooks, Zach and Drew. If you are correct about the final four, she chose well. It will be interesting to see what happens with Drew.

Whatever the case, I hope Chris or Drew will be the next Bachelor. Jef with one f has no appeal.

Comment: That James crying to Desiree talking about someone punching him in the face was from Monday night’s sit down with her, after the guys left at the after party. For whatever reason, they decided not to show it.

Hey Steve.

I’ve been watching the Bachelor / Bachelorette from the beginning (and reading your column since it started – way before it was a spoiler site)… well, with the exception of Jake’s season, which I just couldn’t stomach; that guy annoyed the crap out of me! It’s a guilty pleasure, and way to “disengage the brain” for 2 hours a week. Complete and total useless fluff makes for a nice escape from real life drama and stressors. Anyhow, for all of these years I’ve been a silent lurker on your site… sneaking in to enjoy your snark and exiting without leaving a footprint. I’ve never commented or written, because, well honestly, I just didn’t have anything compelling enough to share or stupid enough to ask. (Except, maybe, why the driveway is always wet when the contestants exit the limos… LOL, just kidding. Don’t have an aneurysm.) That said, for reasons unknown I feel the need to jump into this discussion about whether or not Des’s season is the worst in the history of the franchise. I think that everyone is forgetting how painfully dull Jen Schefft’s season was. She was cute on Andrew’s season, but a total dud as the lead. She had ZERO chemistry with any of the guys, and it was obvious from night one all the way through the season. Watching her season was like watching paint dry… only slightly more boring. I would probably put “Prince” Lorenzo, Dr. Travis, and Jesse Palmer’s seasons below this one as well. I can’t for the life of me remember a character from any of those seasons, with the exception of the crazy “don’t you want reproduction?” lady eliminated on night #1 of Travis’s season, and the final two girl who barfed on the way to the final rose ceremony on Jesse’s season. I watched each of those seasons all the way through thinking, “it has to get better, right? I mean, it can’t get any worse…” At least Des has a personality, and actually seems to be attracted to some of the guys. Not a great season, but not the worst either, in my humble opinion.

Comment: Yes, Jen’s season was awful. And at the time, I remember being very interested in her season because up until that point, she was a personal favorite of mine. Then her season aired, and all the air came out of my balloon. Literally and figuratively. She. Was. Awful. If I remember correctly, she NEVER used tongue kissing any of her guys.

I also remember being told that many of the guys from her season didn’t like her, didn’t care that they got eliminated, and thought she was a giant bitch during filming and they could tell she wasn’t into them.

Is Desiree’s season the worst? I don’t think so. But since it’s the most recent, it’s easy for people to say.

Hi Steve,

I think you can add me to the long list of people that think Brooks has a gay vibe about himself. First I thought maybe he’s just a straight guy who’s very much in touch with his feminine side. But after seeing these pictures of him I thought “Hm….that doesn’t look very straight to me”. You mentioned that other guys’ presence there was questionable, but for some reason I don’t see it. I see it more with Brooks.

I don’t know… maybe he’s bi and loves girls just as much as he loves guys.

What do you think?

Take care…

Comment: Yikes. Don’t think I’ve seen any of those pictures before. Definitely doesn’t do anything to help his cause, but hey, at least he’s pulled into a tie for 2nd place with Sitges as the “most gay things about the Bachelorette” this season. Congrats Brooks!

Like I said earlier, I can’t believe the show is casting gay men to be on a show looking for a wife. So either they completely fooled the producers, or, he’s not gay. I have no idea.

So many letters….my gosh. I got through about 3 pages and had enough.

I am happy that the general consensus is that Jef Holm turned out to be a total tool. I liked him a lot, like your first writer said, but the guy is on some sort of delusional rock star trip.

It is amazing what visions of celebrity grandeur this show seems to provide (Sean, Jef, Arie). It’s embarrassing enough that you were on the show but even more so when you try to milk your G List celebrity for another 15 minutes.

Drew and Brooks do seem gay. Especially seeing those pics that a reader sent in of Brooks!

The destination wedding girl is worse than a bridezilla! When did getting married become about getting gifts? How selfish that she would even bring up that subject! Did you invite people because you want them there or because you want their gifts?? Wow!

    That’s a total red flag…

To the girl getting the creepy text messages – why do you still have these kept if you don’t want the attention from the guy? Makes me think that even though you might not like the guy, you like having these texts to show others. If they truly bother you, delete them and tell him to stop, that it makes you uncomfortable.

    July 3, 2013 at 2:28 PM

Wow… the homo pics of Brooks are hysterical!!! Boy is Des barking up the wrong tree. If that’s what she likes, she might as well go all the way and date one of the Queer Eye cast. I’ve been debating why they have so many effiminate/gay guys on the show. Is it just random, or has the show been on so long that we don’t realize that this is what 20-something guys are like these days? Maybe it’s not them, it’s us. We’re just old and out of it and just haven’t caught up to the new reality. We’re a long way from the Jesse Palmer era…. although now that I think about it, he had a sort of metrosexual thing going on too. But since he was a QB, maybe we overlooked it.

I thought the Dr. RS email from the girl talking about the creeper as a “nice guy” was bizarre. I would have thought she would have obtained a restraining order on the guy or at least asking you whether she should, rather than asking what she did. His texted lines had kind of a Jef Holm, pulled off the internet kind of ring to them…. although I have to admit that it would have been off a very creepy website for that to be true. Ick. I think I need to take a shower.

Oh, and one more vote for Drew being gay. Very gay. And what was with James crying? I thought he was supposed to be the “balance the cast out” straight, macho Jersey Shores meathead guy. Now he’s ruined it. Look, I don’t mind guys crying once in a while, but crying because some effiminate/gay guys were giving him a hard time?? Really?? I would have so loved it if he would have said something along the lines of, “OK girls, talk about it all you want. I’m going to have a beer with the men.” That may have redeemed the entire show! But alas….. he weenied out, back peddled, changed his story and then cried to Des. Oy vay.

Definitely add Michael to the gay list. My daughter graduated from NYU. She is not gay, but her gaydar is pretty much spot on. A guy does not need to be effeminate for her to know. She found her BFF (male- not effeminate) at NYU, but no love interest.

I can definitely see how most people would label Brooks as being gay… I don’t think he’s gay at all, he’s just very “Utah Mormon”. It’s a thing. I’ve known plenty of Mormons from his area of Utah and they all pretty much act like that and give off the “gay” vibe. Didn’t Jef get accused of being gay too at one point?

    However, I can’t speak for Drew…

  9. elizabeth82

    July 3, 2013 at 5:40 PM

I thought Drew was gay from only seeing his picture! How he is on the show has only affirmed what I already thought. (I also find it interesting how he’s been compared to Jake Pavelka–who I always thought was gay, one reason why I didn’t watch his season; the other being that he seemed overall like he was fake and just trying to be famous.) One can only hope ABC doesn’t make him the next Bachelor. Doesn’t anyone on staff have a gaydar? Someone’s got to!

Brooks is trickier. He’s effeminate, for sure–girly voice, mannerisms . . . but maybe he’s bi? I guess I hope so for Des’ sake. I’d be surprised if he weren’t at least bi, I’ll say that!

On huffingtonpost there is the story that Sean and Catherine have postponed their wedding….maybe already talked about here and I missed it?

But my favorite line from the short story was this: “Now that they’ve both freed up a little, they just want to enjoy each other this summer… ”

Enjoy each other? They’re abstaining. hahahahaha! What could this mean? Feed each other food a’la 9 1/2 weeks?

To the person who wrote the first letter posted about Jef……bhahahahaha…what do you mean Jef had everyone fooled….like half the people watching couldn’t stand him and weren’t surprised at his actions after the show. I think you’re the one that was blind. Jef NEVER had EVERYONE fooled…not even close.

Has anyone been watching Whodunnit? It’s completely ridiculous, but also totally entertaining. Recommend. FINGER SANDWICHES!

  13. elizabeth82

    July 4, 2013 at 9:13 AM

@kjopo84: I have! It is kind of ridiculous–that it’s a reality show where people who lose have to participate in the staging of their elaborate “deaths” and one of the contestants at least is an actor–but entertaining! So many people thought Adriana was the killer . . . nope!

  14. kjopo84

    July 4, 2013 at 5:24 PM

Agreed! I really liked the first two weeks and will continue watching. The cool thing about this show is that if you lose, you get to “die” in a totally crazy way! I think the killer will end up being someone who has been neither in the top or bottom: Cris, Lindsay, Deno, Malina (? Can’t remember if that’s her name!), Ronnie or the Hispanic guy whose name I forget.

  15. elizabeth82

    July 4, 2013 at 8:37 PM

I’m thinking Cris or Gino but who knows! I’m trying to figure out who’s being an actor more than the others and who hasn’t been singled out yet as best or worst, as you said. Also who hasn’t shown extreme emotion like tears–as that would be harder to fake (such as Melina and Dana). I wonder if there will be some big twist re. identity of the killer.

So, let’s go over the options for the next Bachelor:

    Jef-Douchey duplicitous little boy
    Brooks-Taken and Gay

    Possible 2.0 options:
    Sean-Taken, for now
    Brad-Had his chance. Twice.
    Ben-No, No, No!!

    The Bachelor is toast

    What about Zak?

  18. kjopo84

    July 6, 2013 at 7:04 AM

I think of the guys who are left, Zak would make the best bachelor. He’s outgoing and so funny and seems like a genuinely nice guy. With Drew shopping for twitter followers and with his tragic backstory, I think it’s much more likely to be him. But maybe ABC will learn from this season and pick someone with energy and real personality like Zak. I doubt it, however, I WILL still watch if it’s Drew. Who am I kidding? I will ALWAYS watch no matter who it is.

People, come on. Whatever happened to doing a little research? Jason Mesnick is an account executive in the field of estate and legacy planning (he’s a financial planner). He is originally from Cleveland, Ohio, but moved to Washington at the age of eight. He is also a “big brother” for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America.

I’ve never said I won’t watch it, but if Drew is the next Bachelor, I have no interest. I’ve watched since Andrew Firestone, but this is the first time I can wholeheartedly say I won’t waste the time. Can’t we have Juan Pablo with subtitles??!! Bring me manly and sexy, not someone with a stick up their you-know-what.

  21. bigfatwoman

    July 7, 2013 at 8:44 AM

Since the ratings can’t get much worse than Des’, ABC really needs to take this as a signal to change things up a bit….I think they would be wise to try a new formula and NOT recycle an old contestant. There have certainly got to be some dynamic single male personalities out there that would be fun to watch.

I would be all for a smokin’ hot African American male or a divorced 40 something guy with kids.

  25. Athena

    July 7, 2013 at 9:07 AM

I agree with everyone else about the need to change things up. For me, it’s not necessarily about the “lead”, though of course that does matter too. We really don’t know who has the kind of spunk and charisma needed to pull off being the lead until we see them in action. For example, Emily was a totally b o r i n g white bread Barbie Doll on Brad’s season, and while she’s certainly not my cup of tea in lots of ways, she sure had plenty of stage presence and personality when she was the Bachelorette. Same with a lot of the others. Unfortunately, Desiree just doesn’t seem to have it, and they aren’t giving her anything all that exciting to work with either. The same old tired dates, the same old formulas re: rose ceremonies, the same lack of real conversation/interactions, etc. are just as, or even more, old and tired, IMO. They either need to make more of a mockery of the formula, ala Burning Love, or go back to the drawing board with the script.

The aforementioned comments about how we really don’t know how much personality someone has from their time as a contestant is why I will reserve judgment on who they choose for the next Bachelor. (Jeez, that’s what I started out wanting to say before I segued onto something else.)

I think they should totally change up the formula for the next bachelor and inject some fresh meat . Maybe a g-list celebrity like Jesse Palmer or something. They could use this as an opportunity to give a couple twists to the rest of the formula. Add the “spy” contestant back in, have them change some bigger rules, set it in an exotic city again, etc. see what works and what doesn’t and after using this as a way to get a ton of viewers intrigued they can go back to the old formula the next season and take with them the best parts.

oyoung1117: I like your ideas. You’re the kind of person they need on their script-writing team, or whatever they call it in reality tv,

So much to make fun of this ep . . . Steve should have a field day. Pretty much all they show Des saying every date is “so cool” and “oh . . . my . . . God.” Get a vocabulary, lady. And Brooks continues to be effeminate and boring along with pretty much all these guys. Chris and his STUPID poetry. I just about threw something at the TV when they already composed a poem together earlier in the date and here he is reciting a poem as the way to drop the L-word over dinner. And then Des says she’s in love with Brooks. Maybe this show wants to show it can spoil itself.

For the 2-on-1 date w/ Zak and Drew, was Desiree wearing…..jeggings? Horrors.

About those jeggings…even on her cute young slender body they didn’t look so good. I guess I’ll stick with my mom jeans after all.

Gay guys, fashion faux pas, stupid repetitive date scenarios, OMG. Maybe they could mix it up on the 2 on 1 dates and really have a 2 on 1. I’d watch that…. as long as the guys don’t completely ignore Des. Ugh. On second thought…. nevermind.

    Thanks Athena!
And has anyone else noticed how often Des feels the need to say “I like that” or alternately “I love that”? I seriously want to go watch an episode of a previous bachelorette season and pin point what exactly it is Des is lacking conversationally the other girls have had. If I remember correctly the edited and generic seasons ABC feeds viewers are usually pretty one dimensional and chock full of conversations about how “amazing” and “awesome” everything is. So I’m not sure what makes Des’s conversations like that seem so much more shallow and bleak. Maybe it is the way whenever they do start having a potentially deep and important conversation she seems to almost purposefully shut it down by responding with “I like that! Me too!” Instead of pushing further with deeper questions. Either way, I LOVED Des on Sean’s season and she has truly turned out to be the lamest ever.
And I hate to be the grammar nazi because I generally do not care in the least, but come on! You give out a list of four “adjectives” and not a SINGLE word is an actual adjective? Those are verbs and a noun. Ughhh.

Earlier in the season, after episode one or two I made a comment that the guys seemed like total duschebags. (spelling?) But I have to take it back somewhat because four of the final five seem pretty good now that we’ve seen more. I am leaving Brooks off the list though because he doesn’t seem like as good of a catch and future husband. Besides, I suspect he likes guys better.

I admire Des for saying she is not afraid of getting hurt.

That “adjective” conversation bugged me, too. Really? Neither one of you know what an adjective is? If they actually do get married, which they won’t, I hope the next generation is a little more educated!

Since I am only 3 years from being really, really old – I find your comments about a 51 year old very insulting. While 1-2 sentences would have been “ok” – to go on and on about it was troubling. It was New Year’s Eve, probably midnight, alcohol…. I can’t believe you said “self-respecting men” – seriously? Like a 51 year old is so disgusting. Do you have any idea the average age of your readers? You might not have meant to be so offensive, but you were. Might want to post an apology or clarification before this turns into a “Paula Deen” situation. ABC execs probably read this column and cheered – finally, something to stop viewers from reading your column and they didn’t have to pay any lawyers.

I was an avid reader of your blog, have been following you from day one and always found you to be quite amusing , but after reading today’s blog I am no longer interested in what what you have to say and will not be reading your reviews.
What you said about Brooks and the older woman was highly offensive, judgmental and extremely narrow minded. Your reaction to younger men/older women was REALLY surprising and I was shocked that you would think this way. Take it from me, you have no idea what you’re missing.

Ok, so I thought Steve emphasized the age difference a little too much, but the comments here are carrying it too far. I was more appalled by the adjective/adverb thing. I knew that Steve would catch it, but no one else cares that the 20 somethings don’t know the difference?
