Big week coming up. Yes, I’m another year older come Saturday. Man, I am one old f**k now. Don’t remind me. Not that I’m having some sort of mid life crisis or anything, but time sure does fly. With that though means I’ll be back in CA this week, and Olivia and Nicholas will be joining me for the last half hour of Thursday’s live video chat. It should be amazing to hear them call each other poopyhead the whole time. But hey, get your questions in early cuz they’re excited. Nicholas even has his end of the year 1st grade school play I’ll be attending Thursday afternoon. Oh, this should be good. Maybe I’ll have him recite some lines for you. Anyway, look forward to that later this week. Today before we get to your recap, I’ve got last night’s ratings, a minor change in schedule, one of Andi’s guys formerly on the “Price is Right,” the LA Times bans a reporter from covering their show because they were “too negative,” and all the “Bachelor in Paradise” info I have for you. Then on page 2 is my review of Courtney Robertson’s new book, which is being released June 24th.
Get your “Reader Emails” and “Dr. Reality Steve” emails in the next 48 hours as Thursday’s column is already starting to fill up with some goodies. There’s a “Dr. Reality Steve” email that I still can’t believe someone wrote me. Hey, I’ll answer anything. Within reason of course, so bring it on. Look forward to your emails.
Remember last season when Lauren Solomon had previously been on three previous game shows, including “Minute to Win It?” Well, we found our former game show contestant from Andi’s season, and it’s JJ O’Brien. And it’s magical.
How do you not love the absolute fake over-excitement on his part? It’s killing me. I know those contestants are told to act excited, but JJ hopped around up there like he just slammed a bottle of Jessie Spano’s caffeine pills and chased it with a case of Red Bull. Well played, JJ. The best part is you could tell he went on the show with the purpose of acting like that, owned it, then laughed at it with his buddies when it aired later. Genius.
As previewed at the end of last night’s show, episode 3 in Santa Barbara airs Sunday night, followed by episode 4 in Connecticut next Monday. This doesn’t throw the schedule off at all since they are going to run a repeat the following Monday, June 9th. Why? Well, it looks like because Diane Sawyer scored a 1 hr interview with Hillary Clinton that ABC is airing on the 9th. I initially thought this may have been their way to honor Eric by taking a week off after his final episode aired (episode 4), but it looks to be because of the Clinton interview since they’d have 4 hours of programming with only 3 hours allotted time since “Mistresses” can’t be moved. Whatever the case, only episodes 3 and 4 are affected. Instead of running next Monday, episode 3 airs Sunday night. And instead of running on the 9th, episode 4 gets moved up a week and runs next Monday. With no “Bachelorette” running on the 9th, the schedule plays out regularly the rest of the season with the finale airing the July 28th, and “Bachelor in Paradise” premiering the following Monday, August 4th. The date changes for episodes 3 & 4 have been updated in your episode-by-episode spoilers.
Ratings are in from last night and they weren’t good. Last week 7.1 million watched the show with a 1.9 in the 18-49 demo. Last night, that number dropped 30% to 5.7 million and 1.4 in the demo. However, you have to factor in it was a holiday. Des’ season premiered on Memorial Day last year, and she drew 5.8 million viewers, so it’s consistent. I’m guessing once we’re back to consistent Monday episodes, the show will draw in the 6 million viewer range a week, which is fine for them.
If you follow Twitter on Monday nights during the show, inevitably #bachelorette will be trending. It’s become a huge show to live tweet about. I certainly do it, even though it makes my focus of taking notes and writing about the show a little more difficult. Well, producers of the show will also retweet some of their favorites. Basically they only retweet people who kiss their ass and will glorify the show. Amy Kaufman is a writer for the LA Times who’s covered the “Bachelor/ette” for years. Just recently, she was told by the show she was no longer going to be given access to Chris Harrison, contestants, and “Tell All” & ATFR tapings because, well, she’s too negative. The website Jezebel wrote all about it last week. Comical. I’ve read Amy’s stuff here and there over the years. There is 100 times worse things being said about this show than anything she writes. But hey, if ABC wants to cut out a major outlet like LA Times from covering their show, that’s their decision. A stupid one, but it’s theirs to make. I guess that’s what happens to reporters who don’t write about what people are wearing, kiss Robert Mills’ ass, or write fluff pieces. Welcome to the dark side, Amy.
Now lets get to “Bachelor in Paradise.” Here is what I can tell you:
-Filming will be in Tulum, Mexico. There’s a house that’s been rented out down there where all 20 contestants will live.
-Contestants arrive this Sunday and filming begins on Tuesday, the 3rd and will last for 3 weeks
-Every person coming on the show is being paid to do so. Some more than others
-Nobody really has any idea at this point how this show will work other than there will obviously be a dating aspect to it
-Don’t think there are going to be challenges or rose ceremonies with eliminations. I think everyone pretty much stays there the entire time.
-They are trying to make this show less trashy than “Bachelor Pad” and more about making relationships. Good luck with that considering everyone going on this thing is basically just looking for a showmance and to be on TV again.
As for the contestants, there’s supposedly 10 guys and 10 girls and here is most of your cast. I’m almost absolutely positive all these people will be on it, with the corresponding season they were on in parentheses since you’ll need it for a few of them:
Lucy Aragon (Juan Pablo’s season)
Clare Crawley (Juan Pablo)
Danielle Ronco (Juan Pablo)
Amy Long (Juan Pablo)
Michelle Money (Brad 2.0, Bachelor Pad 2)
AshLee Frazier (Sean Lowe)
Sarah Herron (Sean Lowe)
Other names being thrown around that I’ve heard: Elise Mosca (Juan Pablo), Christy Hansen (Juan Pablo), Tierra LiCausi (Sean Lowe), Shannon Gibbons (Jason Mesnick)
Marquel Martin (Andi)
Dylan Petitt (Andi)
Cody Sattler (Andi)
Marcus Grodd (Andi)
Chris Bukowski (Emily, Bachelor Pad 3, every other show ever)
Ben Scott (Desiree)
Zack Kalter (Desiree)
Robert Graham (Desiree)
Kalon McMahon (Emily, Bachelor Pad 3)
Graham Bunn (DeAnna, Bachelor Pad 2)
The other thing I’m hearing is that people might show up during the middle of filming. I have no idea what that means (if someone leaves, someone new comes in?) or what because no one knows what the hell this show is about. But don’t be surprised to see people making appearances and/or becoming part of the show after filming has already started. But those are the basics and most of the people you can expect to see on the show which begins filming a week from today down in Mexico. I’m sure I’ll have the spoilers at some point, but honestly, I wish they would’ve stuck with the “Bachelor Pad” theme. At least that was competitive and money was involved. I don’t even know if there’s a monetary prize, or a final “couple,” or what on this show. It’s all pretty hush hush at this point.
