Bachelor in Paradise

“Reader Emails,” “Dr. Reality Steve,” and Live Video Chat Tonight at 9:00pm EST/6:00pm PST

My question is about the whole Ashlee and Claire drama. So yes, Ashlee realized she was caught on camera but since the contestants don’t see any of the camera footage while in paradise, why do you think she felt the need to act all panicky right then and there? Zack clearly is not into drama and wasn’t going to say anything. If she would have just kept her mouth shut, wouldn’t nobody of known other than Zack until the show aired? Don’t the contestants realize that?

Comment: I think she realized it, but probably wanted to get out in front of it. Because then technically if she says nothing and plays along being nice to Clare, knowing she said that about her behind her back, then it comes across as fake. I don’t know what her motivation was, but just by watching what was shown to us, it seemed like AshLee knew she screwed up after she realized the camera was on her, and got out in front of it. But then didn’t do herself any favors when Clare confronted her and she said, “I hear something’s bothering you.” Again, not a good season for AshLee.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the recommendation on Jason and Molly’s podcasts. Very entertaining! This week, they were discussing how some contestants act very differently when they are on camera vs off. Molly said there was a specific person on her season who was presented very positively, but acted much differently once the cameras were off. She didn’t name names, but who would you speculate she was referring to? My money’s on Melissa Rycroft.

Comment: I’d say that’s a safe bet.

Jesse looks like a pedophile. He’s way more of a douche than Chris B. Lucy and Christy are both desperate, and frankly, disturbing.

And Michelle Money needs to figure out what the hell she wants. In episode 4 she’s crying because she wants a guy, then Cody is all about her and it makes her uncomfortable. What? Get it together.

Love the recaps! Keep up the spoiling.

Comment: I mean, Jesse has only been on one less season than Chris has, and the extra season Chris has him beat is a 10 min performance on Andi’s. So they are equally as douchey.

Hi Steve, have a couple questions for you as I watch Bachelor in Paradise.

1) You’ve told us that the producers tried to get Chris B to propose and obviously Marcus did. Do you know if they tried to convince Cody to propose to Michelle as well? I don’t think so.

2) Obviously you don’t know these people so this is all speculation. Do you think Marquel regrets not choosing someone like Danielle or blowing it with Michelle because he would have been able to stick around longer? Same goes for Jackie, although it worked out for her since Clare left, but she had to be nervous once Jesse went on the date with Christy.

Thanks for all you do! Love your recaps! Congrats on getting the Bachelor right, I’m really excited to see the Arie fan responses.

Comment: Seemed to me when it really comes down to it, Marquel really isn’t made out for these shows. He’s really not great TV.

Greetings! Hope all is well. I have some silly questions about this silly show.

(1) Was Dylan actually into Sarah? It seemed so random. I couldn’t tell if he was in earnest or if he just wanted to stay in the house a bit longer. I’m sure there was an attraction there, but sticking around was probably his bigger goal. Then again, if he really wanted to stick around, he would’ve just accepted Elise’s rose. Shows you how badly he wanted to get away from her.

(2) What is Graham doing on this trashy show? I never watched his season, but he seems like a respectable guy. Is this a trick of the editing or is he actually decent? Graham is well liked within the franchise. With that said, I have no idea why he did this show.

(3) Okay, so this is not really a question, but the format of the show really makes no sense. Without a prize or a winner, there is not really anything at stake. (Besides a three-week love affair.) AND, the people coming in won’t really have much of an effect after this week… like, everybody is paired off. I don’t get what the concept of this was. Let’s throw some hot losers on a beach and watch the clusterf**k? It’s very strange. Exactly. There is no point. All of these people could’ve pretty much dated each other off the show, since half the original cast of 14 lives in Southern California. It’s just a cash grab, free vacation, and the chance to be on TV. Everything else after that is just a bonus.

(4) Do you know anything about Jamie Otis and “Marriage at First Sight”? If you know things: Is the marriage for reals? Are Jamie and Doug still together? Is it scripted? No idea.

(5) I finally started Friday Night Lights and you were right! It’s pretty fantastic. Yes it is. Just wait til you complete the whole series. You’ll thank me for it.

(6) Was I the only one who felt kinda bad for Kalon? I know he’s an ass, but that was pretty harsh. I found his one-on-none very cringe worthy. I think you were the only one.

Hi Steve,

I’m a long time reader and first time emailer. I’ve been noticing the editing of BIP is much more comical versus Bachelor/Bachelorette. For example Claire and the raccoon x 2 and tonight’s episode where they showed the entire cast plus Chris Harrison yawning and rolling their eyes during Marcus and Lacys make out session during the rose ceremony which was so obviously edited together from several clips throughout the entire ceremony.

It makes me feel that the producers treat this show like a joke because of what I just stated and also how open they have been with showing elements of production ie. the cast talking to producers and even in tonight’s episode when Claire mentioned speaking to Élan before leaving. These things have not and would not ever happen on Bachelor/Bachelorette.

Comment: Definitely has a different feel than the “Bachelor/ette” franchise. It’s a summer “game” show, so it should be a little different than its predecessor. The “Bachelor/ette” already takes themselves seriously enough, we don’t need a third show per calendar year that does.

Hi Steve,

Love the recaps and live chats. Real quick what the heck are Jason & Molly doing in Paradise? I can’t quite find the spoiler but they keep talking about in in their podcast saying ” oh but we can’t tell you.”

Comment: It’s been in the spoilers since I posted them. They along with Sean and Catherine and Des and Chris went down to Mexico for the finale to talk to the final couples.

Say what you will about Marcus & Lacy but since they are avoiding drama, they are getting to have a nice long “FREE” vacation on a very nice private beach! So, now that Clare is gone, do we not get to see the Raccoon anymore?? LMAO Where’s his Limo exit??

Comment: I hope the raccoon makes another appearance. Even though he’s forever linked to Clare who put him on the map, lets hope he makes an appearance again.

Good morning!

Was there some sort of issue between Clare and all of the Bachelor ladies – specifically Kelly Travis? Kelly has some funny tweets but the recent obsession she has with Clare just gives me the “mean girl” vibe. Pretty much everyone on the show has several screws loose so I can’t understand why Kelly and crew tweet all of their snark about Clare instead of spreading the “love”?

Comment: They don’t like each other. No idea what it stems from but neither is a fan of the other one.

Dear Reality Steve –

I’m a long time reader, first time emailer.

When Lacy going into the ambulance last night, was that a PRICETAG on her dress that I saw? Was she planning on returning it to the store after BIP was over? Not a good look. Perhaps Marcus will be able to afford her a new dress now.

Comment: That’s what people have said. I missed it.

Just read your spoilers done before the show aired and after watching last night’s episode (August 26), it seems very obvious that some or all are there for other reasons……I speak of Clare who, when she was leaving, indicated that she wanted to be on Dancing with the Stars! Really!!! I will be so disappointed if she does get on that show!!!!

Comment: Clare is not going to be on DWTS.

Dear Steve,

Yes, I admit it. I watch the brain draining senseless TV Bachelor in Paradise alas the upside is I accomplish a lot of knitting projects. It’s a no brainer.

However, last night’s episode was too dicey and downright disgusting for me.

Question: Did Jess K stick his finger up Lucy’s vagina while on camera? E-U-WWW-Gross… Not that I know of.

I understand it was not shown on camera but it did seem as though Jesse had no problem doing the low down sexy thing with “What’s her name, Lucy,” and then going back to tell Christy she was his favorite. At least Jesse could remember Christy’s name, what?! LOL

Oh, well, I suppose to counterbalance all that youthful aging 20 something energy was the happy Cody.

Wow, he is so refreshing and confident. I am kind of routing for Cody and Michelle in some weird fantasy I hope they could make their relationship go the distance. Oh my goodness what am I saying?

Creepy is the only word for Sarah and Robert, and weird, weird, weird…

The Claire and Ashlee duo wow, my recommendation to both of them is to leave TV Land, get out of the public eye and never return. Both of them are so hard to listen to and watch. Good grief. I do think both should just distance themselves from this franchise.

Thank you for listening to my rant…I will be bored out of my mind with Chris Soules, only your column dishing on them will be fun.

My new plan is to start now looking for some other TV show to watch while I knit. Of course, I will catch up with all the details by reading your column spoilers and recaps…

What was the reason for Bachelor in Paradise, to watch everyone in their lowest moments of lying and cheating themselves? Could we have a longer kiss between Lacy and Marcus…GROSS!!!

I appreciate you reading this email. My ranting and raving omg. Thank you.

Comment: That’s what “Reader Emails” is for. To rant and rave. Oh, and for some to ask questions I’ve answered 1000 times already. That too.

Hi Steve,

You’ve said before that, on the rare occasion that you do get a spoiler/ending wrong, it is usually because you received info and made an assumption, without further “vetting” it. If someone you trust gives you (what turns out to be) incorrect information, and you publish it and end up being wrong, do you privately call them out on it and/or refuse to use them as a source again?

Comment: It’s happened before. I got info on Andi’s season from someone that they swore was right. I had another source giving me conflicting information, so I never ran with the original stuff. The other source ending up being right. Do I cut them off? No. I don’t cut anyone off just because they were wrong in the past. Each bit of information I get has the capability to be a spoiler. It’s my job to determine how credible it is.

Hey Steve,

Love the blog! Makes this car crash of a show worth watching!!

My question is this: We know that the show likes to pretend it’s all about people finding love and getting married (obviously we enlightened few realise that that is not the case and that all they care about it producing an entertaining show!) However, I don’t understand how they can pretended they’re all about love when they repeatedly cast douches such as Kalon. It makes zero sense and I don’t get how people actually believe that’s what the shows about! Or maybe they’re as dumb as Lindzi Cox? I think certain people are cast for comedic purposes. Or at least who they think will provide comedy. No one in the world thinks Kalon went on that show to date someone seriously.

Has your opinion of Michelle changed while watching BIP? I’ve heard you speak quite highly of her previously and wonder if you still feel that way.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

Comment: I do think highly of Michelle. I just cringe when I watch her on this show because it definitely doesn’t paint her in the greatest of lights. I think her ITM’s are funny, and I don’t mind those. She knows exactly what she’s doing on that show and knows exactly what to say and how to say it for the cameras. That’s why they love her. And being easy on the eyes makes it that much better. I just question why she needs this show at all.

Hi Steve,

This isn’t necessarily a Reader Emails question because it is not Bachelor related, but hey, by all means throw it in there if you want. So my husband and I were looking for a good long-running to show to binge watch this summer and, since he hates the Bachelor franchise, but is a fan of yours, we decided to go with 24 on your recommendation. He trusts you because he loves how you make fun of the Bachelor. Anyway, we love it and thanks so much! My question is, we would love to know your opinion on season rankings. Like, which seasons were your favorites, etc.? We just started 8, so no spoilers for 8 and 9 if you can avoid it, but I find it very difficult to keep track of which season is which and I’ve only just watched them. So, I can understand if this is a harder question to answer, but we would love your opinion, just curious. I hope 8 gets better, I’ve only seen the premiere and so far, well, we’ll give it some time. Some seasons built well after a few episodes.

Comment: So you’ve already ripped through the first 7 seasons? Congrats. That takes some serious dedication.

The thing is, you’ve only seen each season once. I wouldn’t expect you to remember the main threat/storyline in each one. I’ve seen the first 5 seasons at least 5 times each from beginning to end, and countless other times episodes here and there of each season on channel 500 on DirecTV when they run it. That’s why I’m a little more familiar with each season.

My rankings?

Season 5
Season 2
Season 3
Season 9
Season 4
Season 1
Season 7
Season 8
Season 6

But my difference between season 5 and season 6 (first and last), really isn’t that big. I loved them all. I could sit and watch any of those seasons from beginning to end right now if you asked me to and I’d be highly entertained. Season 8 kinda started slow but definitely picked up.

Hi Steve,

I look forward to your columns every week. They definitely make the work day go by faster!

A few questions for you:

Do you think Kalon actually said all of those awful things in the context that they portrayed on Monday night or do you think most of it was editing? He may be an even bigger jerk than Bentley from Ashley’s season! Kalon is a character, and he played that character for TV. And probably exaggerated it even more for effect.
Obviously you just ruled out Clare for DWTS and Andi has said multiple time that she has no interest. Any idea if anyone from the franchise will appear this season….. Josh maybe? No one from the franchise is going to be on DWTS this season.

Speaking of Josh, according to social media he sure spends a lot of time playing golf and going to the park with Andi and Sabel on weekdays during normal business hours. Being a financial advisor myself who’s office is about 2 miles up the road from his, I know that most companies (and especially your clients) don’t take kindly to you leaving frequently during the day for leisure. Any ideas if he has left his job? I know that Andi mentioned yesterday that he was on a “work trip”. Any chance this is tv related? I’m not sure. I really haven’t followed them since the season ended.

Several weeks ago a reader emailed you and asked if you had any spoilers from Married at First Sight with Jamie from Ben’s season. You mentioned that you would see what you could find. I’m sure you have no interest in the show but any chance you have heard anything? I haven’t really looked to be honest.

Finally, which game do you think will be the best matchup in college football this weekend? Go Dawgs!

Comment: A lot of good games. S Carolina/A&M tonight. Clemson/Georgia obviously a good one on Saturday. Fla St/Okla St probably looks better on paper than it will be when it’s over. And LSU/Wisconsin is probably the game of the weekend. From all accounts, LSU Freshman RB Leonard Fournette is a beast. Looking forward to watching him.

Hi Steve,

Love your recaps. Keep up the good work.

Clare’s comment on DWTS was out of left field and will never happen but oddly on reflection I think that would be fun to watch.

My question is: With various Bachelor/Bachelorette weddings on the horizon (Des & Chris, Andi & Josh, maybe Cody & Michelle or Marcus & Lacy), If you by chance met, got to know and became friends with one of the couples from the Bachelor crowd that decided to Marry and then invited you, would you go?

I know you’ve said in the past that you wouldn’t go because you don’t know them but what if you did? Would production staffs presence stop you?

Comment: This is actually an easy question to answer. IF, and that’s a big if, but IF I became BFF’s with a couple, I still wouldn’t expect them to invite me to any wedding, nor would I want to be invited. And if by chance they did, I’d turn it down. If we’re talking about a televised wedding, that is. There’s no way they’d invite me because they’d know not to, and I’m completely fine with that.

If it was a couple that wasn’t having it televised, I don’t know. I still don’t think I’d get invited, and that’s fine.

I’m sure someone else has to notice and comment on this…when Lacy was walking to and getting into the ambulance, her zipper was down on the back of her dress, revealing the retail tag of the dress that was still attached. So, my question is…does the franchise buy the clothing, or do the contestants? Most evening wear has the tags in a location where you must clip off the tag to wear it, because they don’t want people to wear the dress, then return it. If Lacy purchased her own clothing for the show, she was obviously planning on returning it after the show’s run…why else do you leave on the tag? It is certainly uncomfortable to wear a dress with the tag tucked in. Not sure how I feel about this, but I found it interesting that the tag was just there for everyone to see. Kind of dishonest, in my opinion, but I suppose it can be a stretch to buy all the clothes you need to be on a season of this show.

Comment: People paying an awful lot of attention to Lacy’s tags. I must’ve missed this.

A couple of things. Re: Josh playing golf and goofing off from his “Financial Advisor” gig. The local word is that Josh’s sole client is his brother Aaron, who’s competing for the backup QB spot for the Bengals. So, at this point, it’s barely a real job. The guy is pretty much a classic millennial slacker. Have fun with that Andi.

And Marquel, I can’t believe he went with the ” I didn’t get it because I was black” line. No Marquel, you didn’t get it because you are boring, possibly gay since you absolutely refuse to get physical with girls, and you chose to swim in the BIP cesspool. Stop with the excuses. You’re not Bachelor material…. Which considering that prior Bachelors include Ben Flatdick, Huan Pah Blow, Jake Pukevelka, and Bob 5.5 Guinney… Your rejection should probably be considered a compliment.

Have to agree @rob22. At the Men Tell All his defense was all about “If I had only known everyone else in the house was all about kissing, etc!” Okay, forewarned, and yet you do a spinoff and keep it PG13, or not even? Meh, and people thought he could/should carry a season as the Bachelor? Zzzzzzzzz

Graham and Michelle were a couple and are now friends. he supported her emotionally when her dad died. hes a true, loyal friend. they will always be real friends. as for Cody, yes hes into the gym and tanning. but so is michelle way into her looks with makeup, hair, spray tanning. and so what. they are fun spirited people. I hope they last a long time. have you seen michelle’s youtube? shes energetic and silly. so is cody. I say its a match made in heaven.

I thought Marquel proved himself to be a dud on this show. He seemed inarticulate and prone to simple observational statements. A few people commented/asked about Jamie in Married at First Sight. It gives a sense as to why she was so messed up on BPad and Ben’s season. Chaotic family background. She breaks down crying when she saw they set her up with an ugly dude who lived at home. Must be too used to guys like Chris Bukowski (or too used by guys like Chris B).

@Mush I love Michelle’s Youtube channel. She cracks me up!

Totally agree with everyone who thinks Marquel would have been a dud as the Bachelor. He’s either gay or a player and there’s something off about him. I can’t put my finger on it, but he’s one of those people who can fool you into thinking he’s a great guy, but it’s a major façade hiding the real person, which in my experience usually means a lot of anger and turbulence. I, too, thought he was great looking and possibly one of the good guys. I guess a show like BIP is a good place to go to let your true colors come out.

I haven’t watched this weeks’s shows yet, but look forward to seeing that scumbag Jesse leave at the end. I thought he was cute when he was on Jillian’s season, but after seeing the way he treated Elizabeth Kitt, the guy’s a d***. His family must be so proud. Maybe they can start a support group with Chris Buttkowski’s family…..DFA….Douchebags Family Anonymous.

I sure hope this is Sarah’s last foray into anything Bach related. Run Sarah Run…..find a nice normal guy and get away from this dysfunctional Bach family!!!!

If the Michelle/Cody thing is real, I wish them luck. She seems like a person with a good heart, not to mention absolutely stunning. He seems like a sweetheart too. He’s kind of adorable in a goofy way. I guess time will tell with those two. Same with Marcus and Lacy. Isn’t she really involved in her work? It must be hard for her to give that up to move to Dallas.

I’m not buying the Cody thing. OK, he puts on a good show, but a meathead is a meathead. Ever see Jersey Shore. When the going gets tough, punches will be thrown. Michelle better have a good woman’s shelter on speed dial.

@rob22 and @vessel You should go to Marquel’s blog and tell him that. He won’t read it here most likely. The guy likes to get up on his soapbox about race and will use any excuse.

Meanwhile he can run around looking for the white half to his black and white cookie, or the vanilla for his chocolate chip cookie, overlook a beautiful African American woman who was obviously attracted to him and choose the white woman who had no chemistry and probably asked him on the date because she didn’t want to step on toes and he was unattached. But in his mind, none of this is race-based when it’s himself doing the choosing.

The tags on Lacy’s dress. It’s called “wardrobing” and so many of the stylists etc. do it for shoots. It is wrong but people rationalize it. I have found it is more work to find designers who will lend clothing for shoots (free in exchange for images) but it of course is more work getting these connections. Those companies in my experience take the tags off for you and put them back on and the dress probably goes on the discount rack. Not sure the case here – could also have been an ID tag on a mic pack. Very weird place for anyone to put a price tag. Would you think, looking for the price tag on a dress, to unzip the back and look inside, at the bottom of the zipper? I wouldn’t. I’d look in one of the usual places.

@rob22 That’s a pretty broad generalization you make about Cody. Because a guy works out all the time and has crazy huge muscles (and btw, isn’t his job personal trainer?) doesn’t necessarily make him capable or inclined towards violence against women. If I read your comment correctly this is what you seemed to suggest. Even putting that aside, isn’t this the guy that Steve basically said is the lone person ever in this franchise he can’t get a single negative piece of info on, all positive glowing praise?

I just read the Marquel blog and found it as inarticulate as he was on the shows. They really need a bachelor who is too timid to kiss the girls and stays in the friend zone. It would have been funny to watch the final 2 both turn him down and say they just wanted to be friends – if any even stuck around that long.
