Hey Steve – First of all I don’t care about the spoiler having to be changed. That is no big deal. Your track record speaks for itself. Also I respect that you do not reveal your sources because in today’s entertainment world and social media, that is very commendable and I’m sure hard to do at times. So with those caveats, here is my question…
I have always thought that some intern, key grip person, sound guy (insert any role on The Bachelor/Bachelorette) show was giving you information. But in your recent column you said that sometimes brand new sources give you information which need to be double and triple checked. How do you know to trust new sources? Example: I or any of your readers could email you and say “hey guess what – I have the ending for you”. There is no chance in hades that you would believe that, so what is it exactly that makes you trust a complete stranger? (trying to phrase this where you can answer) Then after you initially trust these strangers, you have to double and triple check. Where do you begin to double and triple check? Do you ask for video or pictures or what? Hoping you can answer even a smidgen of this.
Thanks for everything. I think you have one of the coolest jobs ever!
Comment: I addressed this in Thursday’s live chat. Best way I can answer that is I’ve been doing this so long, I’ve become good at picking up BS’ers. I ask a lot of questions. And if those questions aren’t answered how I expect them to be, then they’re not credible. Sooooo many questions to ask someone who claims to have information/spoilers.
And then the other side of it is, I can probably count on one hand how many people email me purposely to tell me false info. It just doesn’t happen. And when it has, I could tell by their first or second email they were jerking with me so I don’t engage anymore.
I just want to start out saying that I really appreciate all the work you put in to this and the “wrong” spoiler is not a big deal, especially since it’s been corrected over a month before the finale. I know you don’t like to talk about your sources, but when this sort of thing happens, do you think it’s a deliberate attempt to give you wrong information?
First, I think you handled being wrong on the ending very well – with grace and good humour. Good on you.
Second, it’s not a big deal – you got almost everything else correct. That’s still tremendous and part of why people will always come back to your site. Besides – it’s actually a good thing that you are wrong from time to time – it keeps things interesting.
Third, I think Kaitlyn and Shawn released the snapchat spoiler on purpose because Kaitlyn was starting to get so much heat and slut shaming for sleeping with Nick. That was only going to get worse with time and the coming episodes that actually air that and its fall out. People were going to roast her alive and that would have put pressure not just on her but their relationship.
On the other hand, people LOVE a happy ending. If the “betrayed” (I don’t personally think Shawn was betrayed given what this show is but others may) stands strong behind the betrayer (think every cheating politician), the public tends to be more likely to forgive the “betrayer”. The spoiler let everyone know that Kaitlyn and Shawn are “in love” (in lust, whatever..), which has made people in general happy and feeling more positively disposed towards the couple (see your poll on whether people are happy with the new spoiler). It also let everyone know that Shawn is standing firm behind Kaitlyn. I think they were hoping people would be easier on her if they had this information.
Will they actually be easier on her? Probably not – or not by much. But I think that was the motivation for it. What do you think?
Comment: It wasn’t the motivation for it. She accidentally sent that out to her Snapchat followers, realized her mistake, immediately deleted it, and production is pissed.
Just catching up and reading your mea culpa. Nice job… lyin’ Brian Williams needs to take lessons from you on how to own up to disseminating wrong info. Wait… I take that back… he lied, you simply had bad info. that you immediately corrected when possible… and honestly (pun intended) since the correction is way before the finale, does it matter anyway? Not to this fan!
Question: I’ve not started watching unreal yet… but have Tivo’d it. Any chance you have time to come up with a summary revealing what characters are based on real life people in one spot? A cheat-sheet for those of us not yet watching it?
Good work this season… keep at it.
Comment: I think once you start watching, you can probably match up who is similar to who. It’s not that every character represents someone in Bachelor/ette world, but it’s pretty close.
Do you have any new updates on what happens to get from 6 guys to 3? I know this was an area that you didn’t have much information on when you gave your episode spoilers. This was updated today.
I know you are a big sports guy. I’m a T-Wolves fan. Who do you think they will pick in the draft and do you think they have a shot at making the playoffs in the next year or two?
Comment: I think the TWolves are a ways away. Making the playoffs? I mean, for the foreseeable future I can see them maybe fighting for the 7th or 8th spot at best. And even that might be a pipe dream in the West. They’ve just really screwed up a lot of drafts and it’s coming back to haunt them. They’ll never live down the year they drafted TWO point guards in the top 10 in the same draft with Rubio and Flynn. AWFUL. Who does that? Was Matt Millen running the team that day?
Hi, Steve! This is the first time I’ve written in although I follow your site all the time. I often have questions, but someone else usually asks them first. I don’t want to be annoying and ask the same question season after season. So hopefully I haven’t missed this question/answer along the way.
This whole thing of Kaitlyn sleeping with Nick. People are calling out Kaitlyn, slut shaming…ok, but what about calling out the producers of the show? They are the ones that have chosen to put this out there and had to know how people would respond! I’m guessing other bachelors/bachelorette have had sex on their dates on the show before the fantasy suite and the producers have chosen to not make that a story line. Definitely made that point yesterday. People should definitely be taking more issue with the show than Kaitlyn. But they won’t and they’ll keep watching.
Why now? I guess Kaitlyn knew what she signed up for and can handle it, but it’s just wrong in mind, knowing how people would respond to this being a woman versus a man. I wonder if they’ll go this route next time they have a bachelor. My guess is no.
By the way, I’d love to see a fun bio on you on your website.
Thanks, Steve! You’re the best!!!
Love your spoilers, columns, sarcasm, tweets, show recommendations, etc.! I have written you several times over the years and was even featured on your “Reader Emails” once (which I am fully aware that this might land me on your page again). Just wanted to thank you for recommending “Friday Night Lights” which very quickly became one of my favorite shows of all time as well as the equally entertaining and eye-opening show that is “UnReal”. I think there have been a few movies that I could thank you for as well but none come to mind at the moment.
Anyway, the reason I am writing you today is because I noticed when I was rereading your Episode-by-Episode Spoilers this morning (as I do most Mondays before the episode) that you had not corrected the ending on your original blog post. Being a web designer/web blogger for a living, I noticed that nitpicky error. I am very impressed that you were about to correct the ending before it aired and I’m consistently amazed at the amount of information you are able to get before and during seasons. I literally wait on the edge of my seat for your daily blogs to which I have subscribed to your RSS feed and have recently set the notification on Twitter to update me when you Tweet (Nerd, I know). Kaitlyn is my favorite bachelorette this show has ever produced by far but I agree that her Snapchat stories can be immature at times.
Thank you for all that you do! I will continue to support you in any future lawsuits (with the hope that there aren’t anymore but will be willing to donate again, if so) and promote your site to all of my friends and family. Keep up the good work!
Comment: The episode-by-episode spoilers have now been updated. Thank you for reminding me to do that.
Long time reader, first time emailer. I have read RS for Bachelor/Bachelorette spoilers for so long I don’t remember when I started. I finally watched Friday Night Lights solely because of your suggestion. I watched all 5 seasons in 14 days. ( I may have had a problem) Thank you!!! FNL is/was AWESOME. I would have missed out on its greatness if you had stayed silent. They owe you some $$ for publicity. Just one question… What am I supposed to do with my life now that it’s over? Netflix binge watching suggestions?
Comment: That’s exactly how to watch that show. Just knock the whole series out in a couple of weeks.
Go start “24.” You’ll be addicted by the end of the first disc.
Hi Steve, my question is
Is ben H the only possibility for the bachelor from Kaitlyn’s season? because everyone else from her final 6 is on bip except chris, shawn, and nick, and it doesnt sound like any of those three have a chance. Yes.
also, am i the only one who thought that when ian said “shes not half as hot as my ex girlfriend” it sounded very spliced together, and they just combined multiple clips of him talking to make it sound like he said that?
Comment: A lot of Ian’s bragging montage was spliced.
(Subject): Kaitlyn IS Shallow!!!!
She is an embarrassment to Canada!
Comment: Actually, I’d go with Bieber.
Hey Reality Steve!
Longtime reader. This is my first time emailing you; I had a huge sense of deja vu watching Ian’s takedown of Kaitlyn. It reminded me a lot of Andi’s takedown of Juan Pablo. I wonder if his thought process was like, “Let me be the one to be super obnoxious this season, but, if Kaitlyn is also not jiving with the audience like Juan Pablo wasn’t, come out in a very strategic position and campaign to become the Bachelor.”
Comment: I can’t imagine Ian honestly thought he had a chance at the “Bachelor” leaving in episode 5. Completely unrealistic.
While I am sure you get a TON of mail I wanted to send one that has nothing but positive vibes. While there are some people who love nothing more than to bring others down, I think what you do is AWESOME!! I just found your website last season and have been hooked. Having said all that, here’s a theory (which I’m sure has been asked/said). I think Nick came on this show (again) in hopes to be the next bachelor. “Rejected twice, can he find love as the next bachelor”. Granted, I know nothing of the inner workings of this show and I know you said during the bachelorette that they wouldn’t pick the runner up because of the filming conflicts. But with BIP I wondered if that were true. Any idea/ thoughts on the next bachelor?
Forever your admirer (even when you’re wrong)
Comment: Nick has zero chance of being the next “Bachelor.” Nor do I think he came on the show for it.
I guess this is more of an observation than a question but – am I the only one who finds it strange that Andi calls JP out for being shallow, surface level and she is America’s hero? But Ian calls Kaitlyn out and he’s the devil? Not strange, but it’s all in the perception of who’s calling out who. Andi had her fair share of haters when she did that, but for the most part, women got behind her because Juan Pablo proved himself to be a complete tool. Kaitlyn is the lead and the supposed “chosen one” and Ian was basically a nobody who took cheap shots on his way out the door.
With all of the chatter about slut-shaming (uuggggh, enough with that term!) and how men and women should be held to the same standards, I find it ironic that there’s a blatant double standard when it comes to sharing your personal opinion with someone. Sure, nobody likes to hear that they are “surface level” but how come nobody felt bad for JP when Andi (and, subsequently, the show) humiliated HIM on tv? She had her haters, but I think because this show is watched by predominantly women, maybe it was looked at as some “women power” move.
And how big of a role do you think the producers are playing in Shawn’s reactions to Nick? They seem to keep focusing on him not being able to handle Kaitlyn with other dudes – especially Nick – so I have to think that his reactions are mostly driven by the producers. I’m looking forward to seeing Kaitlyn address boink-fest with Shawn. Do you know if she addresses it during filming or if the other guys don’t know the full extent of it until now that it’s airing?
Thanks for the entertainment.
Comment: Absolutely Shawn is being fed stuff by producers we aren’t seeing aired.
I am just wondering if anyone else caught the fact that Shawn says Kaitlyn has slept with 2 other guys? So has she slept with 3 men, Shawn, Nick and I am guessing the one who’s name slips my mind right now but manages the restaurant.
Comment: He didn’t say she HAS slept with 2 other guys. He was referencing the fantasy suites and IF she does.
First time emailer here! All the way from Toronto, Canada. I’ve been reading your columns since Jason’s season back when I was in high school & have continued up until now & I’ve just graduated university. Love reading your site every week & it’s made watching each week more exciting!
Anyways just a few questions for you:
I know in the past you’ve mentioned that Chris Soules’ intentions were less than sincere during the show. Seems sad since I really did like him on Andi’s season. I had some hope for him and Whitney but as soon as I heard he’d be on DWTS I knew what you said had been right all along. I was wondering your opinion on Whitney…do you think she knew about him all along and was going along for the ride? Or do you think she really saw a future with the two of them in Arlington? I think she got caught up in the show and probably really didn’t put a lot of thought into it. Then once they were out in the real world, she could probably see where that relationship was headed.
The ladies I work with love to chat about the show and your column every Tuesday morning…one of my coworkers mentioned that she read that the producers purposely brought in Nick because they saw such a connection between Kaitlyn & Shawn? Any idea if there’s truth to this? No idea and no way to prove. It’s obvious he was brought on to add drama to the season, that’s for sure.
Also is Nick the only person Kaitlyn slept with before the fantasy suites? Some of my friends seem to think maybe Shawn might be included in that category haha. It’s possible. I haven’t been told she did, but I haven’t been told she didn’t.
Now that we know Shawn is the winner, I can definitely see Josh Murray as the next Bachelor. I think Ben H is a really great guy with a good heart but I just don’t think he has the charisma to be a lead for this franchise. Thoughts?
Anyways thanks Steve can’t wait to hear from you!
Comment: I think we can throw charisma out the window when casting the next “Bachelor.” Ben Flajnik was the “Bachelor.” Sean Lowe was the “Bachelor.” Chris Soules was the “Bachelor.” The word “charisma” doesn’t come to mind when I think of any of those guys. That has nothing to do with it.
Dude, somebody introduced me to Nioxin many years ago, and it saved my hair. You actually CAN fix that balding spot with daily use of their products, especially the scalp treatment. I could not believe the change in my hair after six months. Trust me on this. You will not regret it.
Comment: Thanks. I appreciate you caring more about my hair than I do. I hate it, it is what it is, and I just deal.
I’ve watched most seasons of this show, but from a pure entertainment stand point. I don’t think I’ve ever taken it seriously, and now even less so with UnREAL on the air (awesome start for that show).
I read your column religiously, but rarely feel the need to chime in with my own two cents. This topic of slut-shaming is one that I feel more passionately about. I know this show does not care one bit how their characters appear to the public, and it really shows. Obviously Kaitlyn is not the first woman in the history of the world (or this show) to sleep with multiple men in a short amount of time. The show consistently tries to one-up themselves and provide as much drama as possible. It’s appalling, but I am not surprised in the least.
I like to consider myself a modern woman and feminist. I am mid (late)-20’s, college educated (working on my Master’s, as well), employed, from a middle-class background, and HEY I have tattoos, too. What I do with my body is my business. I don’t see how anyone could have the audacity to get up on their high horse and condemn someone else for the choices they make with their body. If I have been dating someone for a few weeks, more than likely sex is going to be involved. I’ve had one night stands, as well. I’ve also been in long-term committee relationships. If all of this makes me wrong, then I don’t want to be right.
I know that you said you don’t know if you could get over it if you were Shawn, but this show is not reality. The contestants know that they are going on this show and sex is going to happen (save Sean Lowe). In the context of this show, I don’t see how any of them can consider it a deal breaker. Unless they live under a rock, the final few know they aren’t the only one that is getting lucky. Personally, I couldn’t be with someone who judged me for my actions when I was not in an exclusive relationship with them. If a potential partner cares about my “number”, then that’s about their insecurities, not my shortcomings.
But alas, the show is getting exactly what they want. Ratings. Conversation. Controversy. So kudos for them to being the best manipulators in the biz. I say more power to Kaitlyn, and good on her for sticking to her guns and being unapologetic.
My long winded two cents.
Thanks for your site, provides me with a much needed daily work break Tuesday – Thursday.
Comment: Well said. Can’t say I disagree with any of that.
LOVE what you wrote about the whole Kaitlyn sex situation- I agree 100% with what you said. 2 things:
1. Now that we know Kaitlyn is with Shawn, and you wrote in your recap that Cupcake and Ben Z. are not in the running, are there any other serious options besides Josh Murray and maybe even Ben H.? Josh and Ben H. are in the running and I’m not hearing anyone else.
2. The Britt and Brady bits are so hilariously staged. And they showed the entire clip in the preview right before the commercials throughout the episode that there was nothing new even shown by the time the clip aired in full. Additionally, Britt never posts about Brady on her Instagram, etc. while he posted about her quite frequently. I am certain this is all more publicity.
Comment: It is. They are not together anymore.
Are Michelle Money & Cody back together?
No question, just a comment. I would like to thank you for taking the extra time to speak out against the slut shaming in your column. It’s appalling to me that in 2015 the PERSONAL actions of a 29 year old woman is causing such an uproar. To echo what you said, her decision as an adult woman to do what she wants to do has no impact on me and my life, so who am I to cast judgment? As a 30 year old woman, I found myself identifying with Kaitlyn and applaud her for not backing down and standing by her decision to live her life. But, I’m preaching to the choir, and won’t change any differing opinions in a Reader Email. Thanks again for speaking out.
Comment: No problem. That’s what “Reader Emails” are for.
