Daily Roundup 11/25 – My Interesting Weekend In Conversations David Gingras, Laura Owens Lawyer, My Review Of “Wicked” Including Some Top Tier Vocals, & A Death In The World Of Game Show Hosts

All right. I saw wicked on Friday. There’s going to be like minor spoilers talked about this. If you don’t want to be spoiled, but nothing like major, plus I’m guessing anybody that hasn’t seen the movie has seen the play and I don’t think it’s strayed too far from the play from what I remember.

So the first thing I want to say about wicked is this.

Not bad. Right. Not bad for almost 50 year old man trying to sing Defying Gravity.

Okay, that aside.

I thought Wicked was excellent. It was so good. I’m not a musical guy. Like I said, I think I’ve seen three plays in my life. Like, major feature plays. I’ve seen Phantom. I’ve seen Wicked. Both of them were easily over 15 or 20 years ago. What else did I see? I know I’ve seen, I’m trying to think if I saw Les Mis.

I, shit, I don’t even remember if I did or not. If I did, I was so young I couldn’t tell you one thing about it. I haven’t seen many, so I’m not a musical guy. I like the musical movies. I like movies that have music in them. You know, Grease, Grease 2, shit like that. Oh wait, did I see Grease? No, I never even saw Grease on.

Broadway or in a play form. Never did. But with that said, as I told you on Friday, my sister was obsessed with Judy Garland growing up, used to watch wizard of Oz all the time, which I mean, I had to watch wizard of Oz all the time. And I love the story. It’s an all time classic and I’ve always been interested in it.

And when I watched wicked, the play, like I said, I don’t remember it. I just remember, okay, I think it’s the prequel. Going into Friday, watching the movie. I was like, remember when I was saying, like, I think it’s the prequel, right? It’s that we get to know how Glinda and the wicked witch of the West know each other, Glinda, the good witch of the North Elphaba, whose name obviously wasn’t even mentioned in wizard of Oz.

We don’t know her name. We just know she’s the green bad witch, wicked witch of the West. And this story was how they went to school at Shiz university and how they met and became friends and all that, and how everything came together. Came to be like the prequel to leading up to Wizard of Oz. Here’s the big and this is very minor spoilery Especially if you know the story I was freaking out in the first.

I don’t know. It’s two hours and 40 minutes I don’t know at what point it was established later on what I’m about to say But I was freaking out in the first two hours of the movie roughly Because Ariana Grande’s character, the good witch of the North, when we first see her on screen, introduces herself.

When she goes to school, she says her name is Galinda. And I’m like, holy shit for 40 years, I’ve been calling her Glinda and her name is Galinda. How the hell did I not know? It was Galinda, the witch of the North, the good witch of the North. And I’m just like, there’s no way I can’t be this stupid. There’s no way nobody ever, it never came across in a, in a review or me reading it.

I’ve always thought her name was Glinda, but Galinda shows up to Shiz University and says, my name is Galinda. And then come to find out about, I think it’s roughly around two hours into the movie. I think it’s when, spoiler alert, when Elphaba and Galinda arrive at Oz is when she says she’s going to go by Glinda or maybe right before they leave to go to Oz.

So I was like, okay, but trust me, I was freaking out. I thought I’d been wrong for 40 years about that name. You’re probably all laughing at me. Like Steve, you don’t remember that from the play? No, I remember absolutely nothing from the play. So that’s why I was freaking out. But other than that, I thought Cynthia is it.

Irvio absolutely steals the show. This movie is about her. I know some people want to make it about Glinda. Glinda. It’s about Elphaba. Elphaba is the star of at least part one. She was so fucking good. I, I love, I absolutely loved the movie. The dance numbers, the singing, the costumes, the set design. Like, this is exactly, and I’m sure, look, and I’m not the wicked musical nerd.

That’s saying you’re a nerd. If you like, I’m just saying, I’m just saying the ones that are like die hards and have dissected wicked the play and are just going to pick apart everything the movie has different from the play, don’t do that to yourself. Enjoy the movie for what it was. Yes. I can’t sit here and compare and contrast the play to the movie.

Cause I basically remember nothing about the play, but the movie is so good. If you liked the play, you’ll like the movie. And yeah, you can sit there and say, no, I like it. Nina Menzel and Christian Chenoweth better than. Cynthia and Ariana Grande. I thought Ariana Grande was funny. She did great. I thought it was, I didn’t know it was going to be humorous and I can’t really say I’ve seen a lot of things that Ariana Grande has acted in outside of Saturday night live, which I thought she’s done excellent job on as well.

I thought she was really good, but Cynthia Irvio steals the steals the show. I think I’m calling her Irvio. But it’s a Revo. Sorry about that, Cynthia. Either way, you’re the best part of this movie. And the ending scene is unbelievable. The number is unbelievable. And it’s why

it’s been stuck in my head all weekend. Popular has kind of been stuck in my head to just walking around saying popular, but plus, plus Cynthia is in all those target commercials now where she’s singing the same thing and she’s singing defying gravity in the, in the target commercials. So anyway, if you are a fan of wizard of Oz, if you’re a fan of the play, go see the movie. It’s that good. I can’t believe they’re making us wait a year to watch part two.

That doesn’t make any sense to me. That was a mistake. Not that they shouldn’t have a part two, but that we’re splitting it up and putting them a year apart. Make it six months, not a year. Regardless, great, great movie. Ten thumbs up how good it was. And I just, I really liked the story because like I said, I don’t remember any of it because I was like, where does it pick up?

How did they know each other? Are they friends? Are they enemies? And you all know the answers now, especially if you’ve seen the play and have seen the movie. And I just thought that was interesting. I guess my question then becomes when wizard of Oz came out in whatever year it came out, forties, fifties.

I don’t even remember what year it came out when it came out then. Was this backstory? Was this prequel to Elphaba and Glinda becoming friends? Had this already been written? Or once The Wizard of Oz came out, became a sensation, they decided to add prequels? Or when this movie was first written, this was also a backstory?

That’s something I don’t know. And haven’t really gotten an answer to. So if anybody knows the answer, please let me know. So, I’m talking about, let me pull it up. When did Wizard of Oz was released? Wizard Wizard, Wizard, Oh jeez, I can’t even type. Wizard of Oz came out in 1939. Okay, so when this movie came out in 1939, was there already a back story of, yeah, Glinda and Elphaba knew each other well before this.

Because obviously Wizard of Oz, Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West never acknowledged that they knew each other, never acknowledged that they were ever friends. Hell, it looks like they were enemies if you watch that movie and they just don’t like each other. So it makes me think that after the popular, after Wizard of Oz became popular, popular after the Wizard of Oz became popular, that a prequel was created, a story was created of, hey, let’s build on this and let’s build a backstory to how we got to the point where Wizard of Oz starts.

I, it was great. Like I said, 10 thumbs up. Absolutely loved it. Love the original movie really like wizard of Oz. And I, I just, I can’t get enough. I, the songs have been running around in my head all weekend. Anyway, I want to end on this note, unfortunately, sad note yesterday, one of the early hosts of wheel of fortune, but mainly known for other, his other game shows that he hosted, namely the love connection, Chuck Woolery passed away yesterday and You know, we talk about the bachelor and bachelorette and the current dating shows in the world, whether it’s love is blind, bachelor, bachelorette, any of those dating shows.

The love connection is kind of where it started. I guess you could say the dating game is where it kind of started. And we talked about that recently with Anna Kendrick’s movie, but the love connection was, Just a classic, classic game show from the eighties. And anybody that watched it from the eighties, I’ve been seeing some of those clips show up on my, for you page recently on Tik TOK.

And it’s just so funny to see two people talk about a date. One of them is up on stage and the other one is on a giant screen sitting backstage. And they have to rehash their dates. And obviously the best ones were the ones where it was a complete disaster and Chuck Woolery can’t help himself. And then his famous line, when they go to commercial break, he said, we’ll be back in two minutes and two seconds.

And then he just became famous for cutting that down to we’ll be back in two and two. And then he makes the gun pointing with his, you know, the finger gun point into the camera with a wink. Cheesy stuff, but this is what fueled me in the eighties watching love connection. I absolutely loved watching the show.

Chuck Woolery was the best host when in living color became a thing. Jim Carrey did. They did one of the earliest sketches they ever did on that show. It might’ve been in the first episode. If it wasn’t the first, it was in the second episode they ever did. They did a parody of love connection and Jim Carrey was basically the first person to make fun of Chuck Woolery.

In one of the all time sketches and the date was between. Robin Givens and Mike Tyson. Robin Givens is on the couch. Mike was on the screen. It just Google it, Google in living color, love connection. Mike Tyson, Robin Givens. If you didn’t watch the original love connection, probably won’t be as funny to you, but it’s still funny to me to this day, rest in peace.

Chuck Willery gave us plenty of laughs and. Your work is, if you don’t have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, you should. Anyway. Thank you all for listening. I really appreciate it. I hope you enjoyed my singing today.

Okay. I’ll stop. Yeah, thanks for listening sports daily. We’ll be up in an hour from now. Check that out. Follow me on Apple podcasts. Rate and review and this, you gotta hit play. It’s the only way it counts as a download. Again, thanks again for listening. I really appreciate it, and I will talk to you tomorrow.
