The name of this week’s podcast guest might not jump out at you, but you can bet this is certainly one of the more interesting ones you’ll hear. Michael Carroll is a former producer on the “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” back in it’s early seasons and you may have read some of his interview in Amy Kaufman’s “Bachelor Nation” book. Once I read him, I knew I had to have him on at some point. We’ve all heard the stories, we all see some of the backlash that producers from this show get. I’m the first to call out production for certain tricks and tactics they use and these are all addressed with Michael. He’s very open and honest about his craft, what he does, how he does it, and has a lot of interesting insight into the business that maybe a lot of people still don’t understand. Really learned a lot from Michael in this conversation and I think it will open your eyes to a few things as well. Producers vs. editors is probably one of the most revealing parts about today’s interview as we always tend to blame producers for a contestant’s edit on this show, when that may not necessarily be the case. As always, if you want to respond to the interview, please include Michael’s Twitter handle (@michaelgcar) in your replies. A really good behind-the-scenes look on “how the sausage is made” in today’s podcast. Hope you enjoy it…

(SPOILERS) I discuss Becca’s final four guys, then Michael joins me to talk about how he got started in the business, what his role was when he worked on the “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” and what that entailed (8:45), producers on site vs the people who edit the show (12:23), the first “Bachelorette” season and did he ever imagine the show would be on this long (20:42), producing a network reality show vs cable show (27:08), favorite seasons he worked on (31:10), reality TV producers getting bad raps – should contestants know what they’re getting into (35:35), how he produces a contestant (40:09), is it his job to manipulate contestants and is there a line he won’t cross (49:33), getting emotional responses out of contestants and how it’s not as hard as you’d think (1:01:39), and we end it with talking about something which came up on last week’s podcast and that’s should there be more help given to contestants post-show (1:06:15).
