Podcast #382 – Interview with Kate Casey from the “Reality Life” Podcast & Your “Reader Emails”

Hi Steve,

I’m so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I also have type 2 diabetes and if your Healthcare provider hospitalized you and put you on insulin, it had to have been very serious. I’m glad you’re ok now, and I agree with you on asking people not to tell you to listen to your Doctor, I’ve had plenty of people try to tell me the same!! It sounds like you know what you need to do.

Take care of yourself!

Comment: Yeah, my blood sugar level was definitely much higher than it should’ve been as was my A1C. I had never seen either number before in my life that I’m aware of, so yeah, it was a wake up call.

But just a week in, things have been going great. Eating great, still getting over a cold so have only been on walks not to the gym yet, and my blood sugar level is WAY down from when I checked in to the ER a week ago. Thank you and everyone who has offered support. It’s all about self-motivation at this point. I know what I need to do. Hell, I know what I needed to do before I was diagnosed. I just didn’t do it. I slacked off. Now with this diagnosis and being a diabetic, I have a goal now. And that’s to reverse it. Simple as that. And I know I can. Just have to apply myself.

Hi Steve!

First of all, glad to hear you’re starting to feel better and I hope things just continue to improve with your health.

I’m finally getting around to watching the overnight dates episode and was surprised to see the girls stayed where my husband and I got married.

The thing I noticed is that Rachel and Daisy stayed at Dreams Tulum. That’s where we got married. Rachel stayed at their sister resort, Secrets Tulum.

I believe Secrets is the adults only resort and Dreams allows kids. Because Rachel goes home, I wondered if they put her in a separate location on purpose.

That’s all. Stay well, Steve!

Comment: Oh I didn’t even know who stayed where. Not sure if Rachel staying a different one had anything to do with knowing she was going home or anything. But you never know.

Hi Steve –

You are a podcast ironman for doing shows from the ER. Perhaps unrealistically, I pictured you recording with injured people all around you – maybe a gunshot victim or a woman suffering lockjaw after jumping off a platform into water. As someone’s heart rate flatlines, the last thing they hear is Reality Steve talking about Daisy versus Maria for Bachelorette in the most dramatic Daily Podcast recording ever. Ha ha, I had no roommate. But on the second night, I could hear whoever the guy was in the room next to me having coughing fits. Walls were pretty thin.

Having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s a year ago, I hope you are spared my experiences: people telling me that my doctor must be incompetent and misdiagnosed me, the test I was given is not 100% accurate, I should do research and become an expert in the disease, sending me articles about the latest research, tales of people living a long time with it, etc.

The only medical advice I would give is to put in your contact lenses and bring your phone to the pharmacy to try on cheapo reading glasses to see if that helps reading your screen.

Spoiler: You’ve got this!

Comment: Thanks. And good luck with yours. You are a staple here every week on Reader Emails, and I’d love to see that continue.

Hi Steve,

Glad you’re taking care of your health–not always easy to do. Anyway, I took a few years off of the Bachelor, so this may have been asked and answered previously but I’ll go ahead anyway.

I’m curious about how much is reenactment or are the cameras constantly following their every move. For example when Kelsey was in her room pondering and ultimately writing the note to Joey, was that in real time or did they have her reenact the scene for the show? They definitely didn’t go back and film it. You mean, like at a later date? No. It was in that moment. Obviously they talk to her beforehand, she tells them she’s struggling with Joey with other women, she says she wants to talk to him, so they just make sure to capture her in the moment contemplating what to do.

More curious though is the Fantasy Suite next morning scenes. Are they told that the cameras will be there at a certain time and to preferably act like they just woke up together. I mean come on-who talks that close to each other’s face with morning breath-lol. I don’t care how good looking your are–we all get it. Funny to remember when I dated years ago I hid a piece of gum under my pillow!

Anyway, thanks for all your dedication and stay well!

Comment: I gotta believe the scene of them waking up isn’t the exact timing of them waking up. I gotta believe they freshen up first.

Steve,

I started watching Vanderpump the same time you did. I had decided not to watch The Valley because I did not know anybody but Jax. Since you said you were going to watch it I have now decided to watch.

Farmer Wants a Wife is one of my favorite shows. Watched season 1 and loved it.

I love Traitors. Last year I watched all 3 Traitors and loved them all. I hope to start watching UK season 2 soon.

I am sure you probably know that there is a new reality show starting Monday at 10PM CT staring Steve McBee from Joe Millionaire Richer or Poorer. It is about his family dynasty. I can’t wait to watch it. Hope will too.

Comment: I watched episode 1 of the McBee Dynasty because of my connection to Amanda and Annie from Joe Millionaire. And the fact I interviewed Steven and Calah after their season on the pod and, well lets just say, they’ve had quite the interesting relationship publicly to say the least. I’m honestly most interested in seeing more about Steven & Calah than I am about the family business ha ha.

I am assuming that Leslie must be getting hit hard on social media since Kelsey posted “Please please be kind.” I believe your are correct that her discussion ideas were probably strongly suggested by the producers. But why would they do this if she is their #1 candidate for Golden Bachelorette? I mean, she wasn’t extremely well liked to begin with and this is like the nail in the coffin!

Comment: It’s a good question. Maybe because they didn’t think it was as negative as some of the crazy ass fans think it was. She still said nice things and gave good advice to Kelsey during that sit down. It’s not like she was just this dark cloud of negativity the whole time. But I still think the Golden Bachelorette will be her.

If you had a chance to make some changes to the show what would you change?
I’m aware you have a greater chance of winning the powerball than consulted. But this is more of a what would make the show more interesting, modern, needs to be updated or something along those lines. Maybe as simple as take away the stupid key lol. But you can’t take my answer.

Comment: Ha ha, oh yeah, I’m definitely not being consulted about anything. My thing has always been to embrace social media more. Which they’ve actually done in recent seasons for sure. But I’d go even further with it. Like taking the idea that FBoy Island had and letting the lead look at the remaining 8-10 IG pages before a group date or something.

Hey Steve,

Have you noticed that Joey always asks a woman “how we doing?” I predict a montage of this at WTA or ATFR.

Also, I am irked at how Leslie planted seeds of doubt. Interesting that each woman gave such different advice. Seems very producer driven.

Comment: Yeah, that’s why I think it was definitely producer driven. Look, no one just comes on this show and does and says whatever they want. Maybe they asked Leslie what she wanted to say and then gave suggestions. But to me, I think it was more they wanted the conversation to go in a certain direction and that’s why she said what she did.

Hey Steve!

I haven’t heard you talk about this so just in case you weren’t aware, looks like MTV put out a new series with interviews of some of the top stars in their hometowns. They’re pretty cool if you like them (I skipped Amanda’s lol). I watched it on demand but maybe it’s on paramount+ too. I haven’t switched to any of those streaming platforms but I’m going to have to now to watch All Stars 4. I missed 2 and 3.

Also, I love the outlook you’ve had on the diabetes diagnosis. I’m sure you are helping tons of listeners out there.

Keep doing what you do!

Comment: I’ve missed that show. Guess I need to look out for it.

Hey Steve. I listened to Chris Harrison on Jason Tarticks podcast from a few weeks ago and had two questions that I wasn’t sure if you knew the answer to

1) Chris says there was a host who was supposed to do the show before season 1 but they ditched him and went with Chris instead. Do you have any idea who it was? Nope.

2) Chris was talking about how the show isn’t as easy to host as you might think and the fact that the big names that they tried to get to be the host after they fired Chris shows that. I stopped watching Bachelor/ette for a few years and wasn’t watching during that whole thing. Do you know who they tried to get to host before going with Jesse?

Thanks!

Comment: No, I hadn’t heard that. I think there’s a certain stigma attached to the show for it’s corniness and silliness. Maybe big names turned it down because they thought it was beneath them. I gotta imagine most did. I think Jesse is the perfect host for the show. I have zero problems with him and believe he’s actually more engaging with the show than Chris was.
