Let’s talk American Idol. The finale aired last night.
If you haven’t heard, they’ve crowned a new winner. It is Abby Carter and I couldn’t have been more wrong about everything I said about Idol this season. Just in terms of. The winners and stuff obviously had opinions and music is so subjective. There’s no right or wrong here. It’s not wrong that Abby Carter one, just like it wouldn’t have been wrong.
If Will Mosley one, it would have been wrong. If Jack blocker one, I just thought having watched this show for every season, it’s been on the air. And kind of looking at some of the people who have won in the past at first to me McKenna faith, forget her last name already. She was at Reinholdt or something.
She seemed to me to be somebody that I could totally see winning this show. And then she didn’t even make top five. Then once she was gone, I was like, well, this is Jack blockers to lose, right? Like this, the, the girls that vote on this show are all voting for Jack blocker. And he got to the final three.
But then we find out when they announce who the final two is. And the first one in the final two is Will Mosley. Then I knew Abby made it and I knew Abby was going to win at that point. And she’s really good. Is she going to sell out arenas? No, but then again, what idol winner ever since it moved to ABC and did a reboot is selling out arenas.
Your goal as an idol winner is to release albums. Perform at some venues, but the days of someone coming off idle or even the voice and absolutely blowing doors and doing 40 city world tours, I just don’t think it’s happening anymore because there’s so many other things to watch on television and it just doesn’t have the eyeballs that it did.
Abby’s a really good singer and. I did underestimate her and I will say after watching last night’s hometown date, hometown date, wrong show, Steve hometown visit, you knew when, if you were, if you’ve listened to me long enough and then you watched Abby’s hometown visit and you’re a big fan of Beverly Hills, 90210, you know what I was thinking the second she went up in that tram in Palm Springs, we all know what that tram was, right, right.
Last episode, season five, Dylan being held out over the ledge by the people that know who killed his dad. Like they did it in one of the bachelor seasons. I’m already forgetting which one it was. Remember they had a date in that tram and. Yeah Abby’s in that tram. I’m like, yes, call back to 90210 when Dylan McKay was on to the guys that he was trying to pitch a screenplay to, and they sniff that one out.
And from that point, you know, that was the finale of season five. And then we go right into season six and he realizes he can find out who killed his dad. And the first 10 episodes of season six, I’ll always say, The Dylan McKay, Tony Marchette, Antonio Marchette storyline was probably one of the best storylines they did in 10 seasons.
I think it was. Like, I just, the way it was done, how, the twist, how it ended, all that stuff. But, that finale in episode, season 5, when Dylan went to Palm Springs, Everyone else was partying in Palm Springs. He went there with his buddy to sell the script that they were writing. And that was freaky. They held Dylan out over the edge.
They were going to drop him and kill him, but then they didn’t. So congratulations to Abby. I, I am, I, I’m, I shouldn’t say shocked. I thought Jack blocker was going to win, but just the way the show goes, you have no idea, like all season long, every season, we have no idea who’s leading and who the audience is really connecting to.
And I thought it would be McKenna and I guess it was Abby. So good for her. Her single was good. And. You know, Will’s music is not really my cup of tea, but the fact that he got all the way to final two, clearly there is a large audience for it. So, and Jack blocker will, we’ll do just fine. Like I said, I saw him, you know, a lot of his performance at the Maverick game was shown that I was at the other night, what was it?
Monday night I was there. Yeah. Monday night was obviously shown on the episode last night. And the the arena seemed to like him, the fans at the game on Monday seemed to like him. So I think he’ll do well for himself as well. And McKenna, I think is still going to have a really good career in music.
The other thing I wanted to point out about the finale last night is Jack blockers first song. You know, they had to do Bon Jovi songs and Jack blocker singing, I’ll be there for you. I mean, you talk about a callback. If Abby on the Tram in Palm Springs wasn’t a callback to Dylan McKay in the season finale of Season 5, I’ll be there for you, Jack Blocker.
Hey Jack, do you realize that, oh, I don’t know, 35 years ago, I might’ve made a mix cassette tape and gave it to my ex girlfriend. And that song was the lead song on it. Oh yeah. Mr. Romantic here, Mr. Romance. Not only did I give her a cassette tape with I’ll be there for you by Bon Jovi. I wrote out the lyrics for her as well.
Even though back in the day, I’m pretty sure that album by Bon Jovi had all the lyrics inside the cassette tape. I went extra. And wrote them out for her. So hearing Jack blocker sing that out of the side of his mouth again I’m sorry, I just, I can’t not look at it. He does it every 10 seconds. It’s just, it’s the way he sings.
I get it. It’s just not for me. He’s a good singer. I would just rather listen to him saying, then look at him saying, I find it unnerving. But God, when I heard, I mean, I, I haven’t heard I’ll be there for you in probably I mean, it’s in my Apple music on my phone. I know it’s in there, but I don’t listen to it.
It’s not on any of my playlists. I just have it in there because I have a bunch of songs from the eighties in my Apple music. But man, seeing Jack sing that, I was like, Oh my God, I cannot believe I did this in eighth grade. I cannot believe, and this is after we broke up. I didn’t give this to her as like, Hey, this is like a, A gesture from me as we’re dating.
No, we had just broken up and she had broken up with me. I think, did she, I can’t remember. It was eighth grade. She was in seventh grade and I was in eighth and it was at the end of the year. So yeah, the whole thing was yeah, I’ll, I’ll, I mean, I, how do you forget something like that? Like I’ll remember that until the day I die and remember who she is.
I know who she is. I mean, and you know, the ironic thing about all of this before my niece and nephew moved here to Texas, when Olivia was in seventh grade and Nicholas, Nicholas was in fourth grade. They went to school in Southern California. They were living in Southern California in Orange County before they moved here.
And they went to the same school as that girls who I gave the, I’ll be there for you, cause that tape to an eighth grade. She obviously got married, had kids. Her kids went to the same school as Olivia and Nicholas. So I actually saw her at one of the carnivals. So this would have been, let’s see, they moved out here in 2016.
Probably saw her in 2014 or 2015 at the carnival for the school. I mean, I hadn’t seen her since probably 8th grade, but No, she did not mention anything about, Hey, I still got that cassette tape you gave me, you weirdo. Anyway. Thank you all for listening. Really appreciate it. Follow me on Apple podcasts also rate and review, but please hit play.
If you miss an episode, just go back and hit play. It’s the only way it counts as a download. So, if you could do that, that would be much appreciated. Sports daily would be up in an hour from now. I’ve got a lot to talk about Mavericks and stars, both in the conference finals for the first time in the history of the city.
People are fired up out here as am I. So thank you all for listening. Really appreciate it. And I will talk to you tomorrow.
See.
