“Reader Emails” Incl a Former “Bachelor” Gets Engaged

Hi,

You may have already covered this, but I have been wondering why they replaced Luke Pell with Nick. Especially if you think he isn’t on the show for the right reasons. Luke would have been the better choice!

Comment: That’s your opinion. Plenty of others differ. And I can say it til I’m blue in the face Nick wasn’t doing this show to find a wife. Doesn’t mean that everyone reads it and/or believes it. So the show will do what they do, and I’ll continue to do what I do.

Hey Steve!

Just a question about the fight you spoiled between Vanessa and Rachel. Do you have any more info on what it was about? I know it is still early in the season but Vanessa seems to be a fan favorite already, but in your spoilers you had hinted she isn’t very well liked by the girls. Do you think she will get a better edit than what really happened or will Rachel get the better edit? Or will Vanessa’s edit slowly begin to change? She definitely isn’t afraid to speak her mind, just curious as to what those two could get that heated about!

Thank you!

Looking forward to your response!

Comment: I have no idea how they’re gonna edit it, or if it’ll even get shown. I’m just aware it happened. No new news to report really.

Hi Steve,

First, really enjoy your website and your podcasts are fantastic (huge fan of Juliet Litman so added bonus when she’s on….. and Dana Weiss was fantastic)

But my main question:

What is your opinion of the lead Bachelor \ Bachelorette going back into post-production ITMs \ voice overs to do damage control concerning his \ her actions during the season to make the chosen final one feel better?

I had thought about that in the past but it really popped last night with Nick and Vanessa when she basically said “if you are looking for another notch on your Bachelor lipstick case then I’m out”….. I rewatched the episode and the voiceovers and ITMs seem to down play his actions with Corrine yet he was certainly into it….

Just wondering if he gives Vanessa a good answer now and then had to go back and do the damage control…… especially since Corrine made it to final 4! How can he look Vanessa (or any of the girls) and say “really, I was not into her… Producers asked me to play along for ratings”

Comment: It’s certainly possible since plenty of “pick ups” are done after the season is over where they go into a sound booth and record audio clips again to fit a certain narrative. However, we’ll never know the when/what/how and who did them to ever get a clear answer.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your cynical and behind the scenes view of what goes into producing The Bachelore/ette.

A few questions for ya:

1. Do the producers make the winner have a social media presence? Before the show started it didn’t seem like Vanessa was very visible on social media. Now she’s on snapchat, trying to figure out twitter and is Instagramming. Also- do they control what posts Nick likes and who he follows on Instagram? For example, would that prohibit him from liking Vanessa’s posts? Make them? I don’t think so. Nick has liked a bunch of posts from a bunch of different girls this season. So obviously they’re letting him get away with that. Impossible to read into every like/follow/etc. Don’t waste your time. Pointless.

2. I know Vanessa’s a special ed teacher but you did mention she’s done a little acting. Any insight into this and do you know if she’s actively pursing a career in acting? I know sometimes you get emails from people that know contestants and they tell stories. Have you heard anything negative about Vanessa? I have no idea what Vanessa’s career aspirations are after this show. Have I heard anything negative about Vanessa? Hmmm…good question. Sure. Is it Jordan Rodgers level negative? No. Not at all.

3. On Nick and Vanessa’s one-on-one date I swear I heard Nick say the date was in Atlanta. “This is the tallest building in Atlanta”. Maybe I mis heard but if it was in Atlanta do you think they had them sleep in Atlanta and fly back the next morning or would they fly back as soon as the date is over? Also I couldn’t handle Nick’s crying on the one-on-one all I thought about was look like those acting classes paid off. He said LA, but marble mouth sometimes is a little hard to understand.

4. Do you think UNreal had any influence on there being more non-white women this season? It’s possible, but impossible to say for sure.

5. Any thoughts on the NYT article about Aaron Rodgers where his Dad and former coach were interviewed? The article didn’t mention Olivia but his dad said something about fame changing people. Do you really think Olivia Munn was the reason for the rift? Something tells me there is more than what’s been out in the media…

Thanks Steve!!

Comment: Here’s what I will say about that article. Bill Simmons podcast that was released on Monday was very interesting. Bill is dialed in to things. He knows people. He threw out this notion that why is everyone siding with the family and Jordan on this, and maybe it could “possibly” have something to do with Aaron having so much money, and that money could’ve played a factor in the family dynamic with them maybe asking for some, trying to leech off him, etc. Bill stated it clearly as his opinion with no inside knowledge. And my opinion is that Bill heard that from someone that is close to the situation. Wouldn’t be the first time it’s been said.

Hi Steve,

Longtime fan (but who isn’t?). Question: Where do they find the audiences for the concerts you see aired on some of the episodes? For example, the Backstreet Boys concert in week 3 or the Chris Lane concert in week 4? Are these regularly scheduled concerts and whoever was already planning on attending the concert is also “lucky” enough to see an episode of the Bachelor/ette being filmed as well?

Also, I can understand that the regularly scheduled concerts would have an audience made up of people who paid for tickets months in advance, however you mentioned in your spoiler column that the Chris Lane concert was supposed to be held in SC, but then moved to WI last minute due to the hurricane. So how did they fill a venue with people so quickly? The Backstreet Boys performing at a 500 person venue in Hollywood was probably the easiest thing to sell out in the world. Chris Lane tweeted out (which I retweeted) and I believe the Pabst theater tweeted out two days before his performance. I don’t think it was hard to fill up that venue either. Most of the time they’ve had a concert with an audience, ABC, the venue, and the performer are tweeting stuff out for people to show up.

Side rant: I think I’d be pretty upset if I paid good money to see a band in concert (not expecting a Bachelor/ette episode to be filmed during that same time) and they ended up cutting out portions of their show or had to re-do the song 3 times just to capture the perfect moment on camera.

Comment: The Backstreet Boys still put on a concert without interruptions singing most of their hits. The “Bachelor” stuff was just a bonus.

Hi Steve,

Just watching this weeks episode, why does Corinne insist on calling it a “nanny”? I’m sure that producers are involved and that she’s playing it up for the camera, but once you’re an adult, what she describes is no longer called a “nanny” it’s called a “personal assistant”.

Also, I’m a Canadian living in England, so you can add me to your international following. I can’t imagine that I’d still be watching this show without your spoilers and insider info. Thanks!

Comment: Nanny is just the word she’s choosing to use on TV. I think we all know she’s basically their housekeeper who probably lives there full time.

England in the house. Cheerio! (Ummmmm, is that right?)

I have nothing more to say than this poodle’s hair looks just like Nick’s.

Hello again!

First off I want to say that I finished FNL and I am devastated to not have the Taylor’s and their wholesome guidance in my life anymore L Do you have any other recommendations for some binge worthy shows? I am a huge fan of 90210 as well so I would think we have some similar tastes! Would love any suggestions you have! Only new show I’m watching is “This Is Us.” If you liked FNL, you’ll like “This Is Us.” I’d suggest that one.

On to the reason we’re all here-

I have to say, I did speak too soon when I was complaining about the lack of creativity in the dates the last episode. I’m not going to lie, I love me some Backstreet Boys and it took me straight back to those school dances! Though I did cringe a bit thinking about the fact that some of these girls were so young when BSB v. N’Sync was all the rage! This brings me to my first question-earlier in one of your posts I think you may have mentioned that the producers pick the dates and the girls on them. If this is the protocol, does Nick get any say at all? Is the selection of women based on pre-show interviews (like for example did they maybe ask Corinne what her weaknesses are, and other than her extremely low IQ, she threw in horrible planned dancer) ? He doesn’t have much say at all.

My next question is quite random and actually asked of me by my husband last night-has anyone else ever puked on a date before? (I feel like this might have happened on a group date, but on a 1-on-1 I’m not sure) And his second question-where does the food come from and do they take their orders on drinks and food because the food never seems to get eaten? Random I know but just wondering!!

Thanks so much for taking your time to answer all these emails! Keep up the good work!

Comment: A lot to go over in 33 seasons, but one that definitely comes to mind is one of Trista’s overnight dates during her “Bachelorette” seasons, either she or her date got sick and I believe threw up. Can’t remember which one.

Hi Steve – just wondering who your top five girls are based on looks alone for this season – I know you mentioned some before the season started and wanted to see if you changed your mind at all. Thanks.

Comment: My top 5 (in no particular order): Liz, Danielle L., Raven, Whitney, and Danielle M.

Hi Steve,

A question for you…

The Rodgers family feud: reading Ed Rodgers’ recent interview this
week makes me think even more that it’s really the whole Rodgers
family (with the exception of Aaron) that is all about fame and is
therefore making this feud worse. If Ed feels that “airing public
laundry,” as Jordan did on the show, is truly not a good idea, then
why would he discuss the family issues with the New York Times? And if
“one in the news is enough,” it seems hypocritical of Ed to
participate in a news interview himself. If Aaron has his reasons for
distancing himself from the family, it seems like we will never know
his side of the story, because he’s the only one respectful enough not
to talk about it. Are you able to share any thoughts?

Thank you for answering!

Comment: Can’t say I disagree with any of that. Read my answer a couple questions above in case you skipped it.

So, as a speech pathologist with a history of enjoying the heck out of this train wreck, watching/laughing with my husband and trying not to leak your spoilers to him, I gotta tell you the first thing I noticed this season was the change in Nick’s articulation. He has always mumbled a bit but I think it’s much worse, and when I saw it come up last week in your column I had to put in my opinion. I think he went Hollywood and got veneers, which probably aren’t a great fit and are messing with how precisely he can form certain sounds. Maybe took the cheap way out with them…should correct itself as he adjusts, or not if he’s just half drunk and lazy all season 🙂

Thanks for all the years of entertainment and behind the scenes scoop!

Comment: I haven’t studied his teeth this season, but he definitely seems to mumble as much, if not more, than he did before.

Hey Steve,

Two questions, one long, one short.

All of your readers are aware of this season’s final results. As is anyone who wants to spoil themselves. Due to the continued success of the show I’m going to assume that most people don’t spoil themselves.

Therefore I find it surprising that so much of the press and media surrounding the show is about Vanessa, Rachel and Raven (people were always going to talk about Corrine) considering they aren’t getting that much attention at this point on the show. I don’t think the uninformed viewer has seen anything on the show from Rachel or Raven to suggest they are headed to final four. Yet they are all over magazine covers and being reported on left and right.

I don’t remember this much media regarding any of the final four contestants (villains aside) this early in the show.

I’m sure they will get more airtime as other girls are eliminated but I was just wondering if you noticed the medias (people.com/glamour.com the weekly magazines) current hyper focus on the final 4? And if so, why you think that is? Why? Because they know who to focus on since they’re aware who lasts long.

Question 2: You said Vanessa didn’t want to leave Canada but she told glamour.com in an interview during the beginning of filming that she was open to leaving. Do you think she said it because that was what was expected of her, or do you think something has since happened to change her mind?

Comment: I did read the Glamour.com interview. You can too right here. I don’t put much stock into it because, as you said, this interview was done in her hotel room before filming even began. What’s she gonna say, “No, I’d never move.” The reporter’s next question would’ve then been, “Then why would you even come on?”

Nick and Vanessa will absolutely be together come ATFR time, they’ll put on a good face, they’ll say all the right things, there will be people on this planet who will cry when they see them together thinking they are the greatest couple this show has ever produced, like pretty much every couple ever from this show has been. It doesn’t mean anything. Just let time pass by and we’ll see how it goes from there.

Hey Steve! Do you think they’d let Corinne bring her nanny with her to BIP? That would be hilarious. She’d be pretty useful, what with Corinne’s nipples hanging out and her clothes always coming off. Raquel could make Corinne her own personal cheese pasta lunches (who the hell calls it cheese pasta anyway?) so she wouldn’t have to go without. She could lie next to her during make out sessions–you know, just in case she needs anything. The possibilities are endless. What do you think?

Comment: My guess would be no.
_____________________________________________________________

The clip from Kaitlyn’s rejection of Nick from “Countdown to Nick” reminded me that he was quite rude to the second Bachelorette he dated. During Kaitlyn’s rejection, she asked him, “Well, do you think that I didn’t fall in love with you…?” and he said, “Listen, if you were in love with me, I wouldn’t be standing here. […] you don’t love me.” Watching at a bar, that made me say, “What an asshole,” out loud. I can’t think of a harsher insult to somebody than to tell them, “No, you don’t,” when someone tells you they love you. Even if Nick was 100% sure that Kaitlyn did not love him and was mistaken (which he’s not!), there are gentler ways to present that thought than a blunt “no, you don’t.” Nick doesn’t know Kaitlyn’s feelings better than she does. I could tell that he hurt her feelings when he said that, she just looked at him, silent, wincing in pain and crying. What could she say? Have a “yes, I do”/”no, you don’t” child’s match with him?

Comment: Nick Viall everyone!
